Input Needed From the Community
We need every voice! Mr. McDonough announced his retirement from the Houston Independent School District this week. Bellaire High School will begin it's search to name a new principal.
Historically we have relied on the Bellaire HS community to participate and to contribute to school wide requests for input. Please plan to attend the meeting Monday, October 17 at 6:00 pm. The Houston ISD is seeking input into the qualities that the community is seeking in the next principal of Bellaire High School. The meeting will be held in the auditorium. * Please note that this is a time change from the original meeting.

ASVAB - Military Exam
Bellaire High School will be hosting the ASVAB exam for student who are considering pursuing the military after graduation. The test will be administered Tuesday, October 25. Students can sign up through the counselor, the College Center or in the JROTC.
The ASVAB is timed and takes about 3½ hours to complete. It’s a good idea to practice in advance, to get familiar with the process and to find any areas you might need to improve before you take the real exam. You’ll find a great practice test and lots of other information about the ASVAB at the Department of Defense's ASVAB Career Exploration Program site (ASVABprogram.com and https://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/asvab). Since your test scores can have an impact on your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)—and whether or not you can attend certain special schools - we recommend you make the most of these additional resources.

From the Bellaire Counseling Office:
As part of National Bullying Prevention Month, HISD is recognizing next week (Oct. 17-21) as Bullying Prevention Week to raise awareness and bring attention to the growing epidemic of bullying and social isolation. One of the most helpful ways to deal with these situations is to talk to a trusted adult in your life. That could be a parent/guardian, coach, teacher, administrator, youth group leader, boss, or counselor.
· Sometimes, a person is bullying and does not realize they’re doing it. If you are unsure how your words or actions are being perceived, reach out to your counselor to discuss it.
· A person may bully because they have trouble handling their emotions or because they have seen violence at home. If that’s you, talk to your counselor about how to handle conflict.
· Sometimes, people who bully don’t realize how much their words hurt. Bullying can cause very real problems for the person who is being bullied. If you are feeling upset by the way a classmate is treating you, your counselor can help with next steps.
It can be hard to change, so talk with an adult you trust if you need help. Bellaire staff are here to help if you need anything.

Library Update
The past 2 weeks have been very busy for students, teachers, and parents here at Bellaire. So I wanted to keep this short and sweet. The students have really started showing how much of readers they are by utilizing all that the library has to offer. I wanted to spotlight the different ways students are accessing their books!
We have had success with our Mobile Library thus far each month, and the trend is staying consistent for October- despite days off and testing days.
MackinVia (our online database for eBooks & audiobooks) has seen a large increase in demand. In the past 2 weeks we have already had 120 checkouts and 209 online reads through MackinVia.
Lastly, we just got access to Comics Plus from the HISD Library services team. Bellaire HS is serving as a pilot campus. We have gotten 92 checkouts from students and staff using Comics plus, and the last 7 days have accounted for 64 out of the 92 checkouts!
As we get closer to moving into the library, you may see a shift in focus from physical books to electronic books and services as we start preparing for the "BIG MOVE" which might limit our physical book access. Thank you all for your support of the library and our services- even if they are a bit unconventional at the moment.
