ASVAB - Military Exam
Bellaire High School will be hosting the ASVAB exam for student who are considering pursuing the military after graduation. The test will be administered Tuesday, October 25. Students can sign up through the counselor, the College Center or in the JROTC.

The ASVAB is timed and takes about 3½ hours to complete. It’s a good idea to practice in advance, to get familiar with the process and to find any areas you might need to improve before you take the real exam.  You’ll find a great practice test and lots of other information about the ASVAB at the Department of Defense's ASVAB Career Exploration Program site (ASVABprogram.com and https://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/asvab). Since your test scores can have an impact on your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)—and whether or not you can attend certain special schools - we recommend you make the most of these additional resources.

From the Bellaire Counseling Office:
As part of National Bullying Prevention Month, HISD is recognizing next week (Oct. 17-21) as Bullying Prevention Week to raise awareness and bring attention to the growing epidemic of bullying and social isolation. One of the most helpful ways to deal with these situations is to talk to a trusted adult in your life. That could be a parent/guardian, coach, teacher, administrator, youth group leader, boss, or counselor.

·      Sometimes, a person is bullying and does not realize they’re doing it. If you are unsure how your words or actions are being perceived, reach out to your counselor to discuss it.
·      A person may bully because they have trouble handling their emotions or because they have seen violence at home. If that’s you, talk to your counselor about how to handle conflict.
·      Sometimes, people who bully don’t realize how much their words hurt. Bullying can cause very real problems for the person who is being bullied. If you are feeling upset by the way a classmate is treating you, your counselor can help with next steps.
It can be hard to change, so talk with an adult you trust if you need help. Bellaire staff are here to help if you need anything.

Library Update
The library has been busy- and we can now see into the library and the construction crew is making great progress. The infographic above goes over some of the key things students should do to be able to make the most of their library.

Libraries are places where you can access information and books for free, both in person and online. So, we wanted to spotlight a few things that make this access easier.
Make sure your student has accepted the Library Canvas course. The students can manage how they get notifications for the course, but this Canvas Course gives them quick and easy access to updates for the library and other programming/activities. The library provides daily challenges for students to participate in to give opportunities for learning and chances to tend to their mental health and social emotional learning.

Make sure you visit the Mobile library at least once a week. The Mobile library collection is switched out every week, and typically we change out the collection based on the requests of students each week, mini-displays or collections based on online displays, and newly available books that we have discovered before the move. This week alone we have had over 100 circulations from the Mobile library and 217 thus far this month.

Utilize the databases and eReading platforms. Databases are available for students to use for research, for classes or curiousity, they provide up to date articles, books, and more on a variety of topics. These databases can be accessed through Clever or through the BHS Library Canvas page. MackinVia is one of our eReading platforms that gives students access to eBooks and audiobooks. In the month of October alone, students have checked out 151 titles and read online 311 times. Comics Plus is a new graphic novel and manga online platform that Bellaire HS is piloting for the district, and we have had 113 checkouts on it as well.

Utilize your librarian. The librarian's position requires a minimum of 3 years of teaching and a Masters in Library science. Ms. Carpenter taught English for 5 years before becoming a librarian and this is her 4th year as a librarian. The library is a place always in support of inquiry- if you need help with research, help finding a book/something to read, and help with any technology. The library is always here to help.
