This is Important!

HISD families are asked to complete the online Student Verification form. The Student Verification form includes annual acknowledgments and general updates, such as contact information and student health information.

For current students returning to HISD for the 2023-2024 school year, Student Verification forms will be completed via the HISD Connect Parent Portal Account.

Socioeconomic forms are also not available in PowerSchool. Please make sure that this form is submitted!

Parking Lottery Open to Juniors

The Parking Lot Lottery is now open to Juniors and will accept student entries until September 15th. Only students with a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and access to a car they will drive to school may enter their name in the parking lot lottery. *Please note that a student's name must appear on the insurance card as a covered driver. The fee for parking spaces is $180.

Only students who are classified as Juniors or Seniors are eligible to enter the lottery. This means you must have earned 12 or more credits.

The week of September 18th, students will be notified of lottery results by email. (Results of the lottery will be shared via HISD student email addresses.) The spots are non-transferable. You MAY NOT give or sell your spot to anyone. If you decline your spot, it will be given to someone on the waiting list.

Submitting this form does not guarantee anyone a parking space. Winners will be notified the week of September 18.

Payment and contract instructions will be sent to students via their HISD email accounts. Students who are selected in the lottery will submit their $180 payment via School Pay and keep a copy of their receipt, a copy of their insurance, and their driver's license to Ms. Frank in the Main Office beginning Sept. 18.

NWEA MAP Growth Assessment

The week of September 18th, students in English I, English II, Algebra 1, and Biology will be taking the NWEA Map assessment.

The MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Test is a computer-adaptive evaluation designed to accurately measure your student's skills in Mathematics, Reading, and Language Usage. Unlike traditional tests that compare students to each other, the MAP Test identifies your child's unique learning level, helping educators tailor instruction for optimal learning. It's administered multiple times a year, offering real-time, actionable data that can be used to set goals and track academic growth. Understanding your child's MAP scores can give you valuable insights into their academic needs and strengths, aiding in more focused and effective learning.

Students will need charged laptops with them in all of these classes to be able to take the assessment.

Schoolinks Replaces Naviance
Students now have access to Schoolinks. They can access it via their Clever account. Parents and students can gain more information on Schoolinks via this link. To get a head start, students can set up their Schoolinks profile and explore the platform and what it has to offer.

For any questions about Schoolinks, please contact Bellaire HS College Advisor Jelicia Hunt at jelicia.hunt@houstonisd.org

Course Change Requests

If a student notices an error on their schedule (such as a course they already have credit for or have a missing class period), please submit a schedule change to the schedule change link. Students should not submit change requests to their Counselors by email or phone. Counselors cannot honor schedule change requests for specific teachers or specific class periods. We cannot overload classes to accommodate schedule change requests. Specialty courses such as advanced fine arts or athletics must first be approved by the teacher or coach. Schedule change requests can be submitted up to the 15th day of school, September 18, 2023. Approval to join a new course is based on space availability and priority. When making schedule changes, Counselors do attempt to cause the least disruption to the schedule as they can. However, that is not always possible. By submitting the schedule change or level change form, you are authorizing your counselor to change your entire schedule if necessary (including teacher changes) to accommodate your requests. Keep in mind that prerequisites must be met prior to enrollment in a course.

The level change window is: September 18-September 29, 2023 (Example- A student wants to drop HADV World Geography and add Academic World Geography.)

No level changes will occur in the first three weeks of school, with the exceptions listed below. Once the level change window is open, changes can occur until the end of the first six weeks. Also, there will be no level changes on the days teachers are verifying grades for the first six weeks. Students are still able to turn in the level change form during that time, and it will be applied to the second six weeks once grades are published.

 Exceptions:

1. The incorrect level was placed on your schedule. (You did not request the level.)

2. You are a new student to BHS (any grade level) in the 2023-2024 school year.

3. If a student is recommended to move up a level, parent approval is required.

4. To be considered for a level change after September 29th, it must be reviewed and approved by a committee consisting of the Counselor, AP or Dean, parent, and teacher.

If you have any questions, please email your Counselor. There may be a longer response time during this busy time of the school year. We appreciate your patience. Your student’s Counselor’s name and email is located here.

Bellaire Library Update

The 23-24 school year has gotten off to a fabulous start!

The Bellaire High School Library was so excited to host the PTO & Coffee with the Principal last week. Ms. Carpenter met a bunch of parents who want to help and are so happy to see all of the great things the library is doing. All students got a brief Library orientation on the first day- and now we are hosting more specific classes. We have also welcomed specific classes like Sociology to look at the 7 decades worth of Bellaire High School history through yearbooks- this allowed the students to make firsthand observations on how customs and norms have changed over time.

Some Successes we have had so far this week are over 1892 student visits in the library in the first 2 weeks, which is an average of 200 students a day! We have also had over 686 physical books checked out since school started- which is significantly better than the previous year. This is credit to having a fully open concept library and a fully stocked library, after the influx of 5k new books added at the end of this past year due to ESSER funding.

If you are interested in donating or volunteering with the Bellaire High School Library- please check out our Support the Library Page on the Bellaire HS Library website. This gives you access to see what is going on and what the current needs are on campus. Currently, we have a Donor's choose for small items to celebrate our reading initiative: Cardinals Read and a new SignUP Genius for Parent Volunteers to help us in the library during Cardinal Hour.
