Dear Mooney Family,
As we enter the most sacred time of Holy Week, Cardinal Mooney extends our heartfelt wishes for a prayerful and blessed journey through these holiest days. May the Paschal mystery renew your spirit and fill your hearts with the hope and joy of the Resurrection. We hope our students have a joyous Easter and a restful, well-deserved break (April 18-21); we look forward to seeing everyone return on Tuesday, April 22.
As part of our Lenten almsgiving, our National Honor Society hosted a food drive this past week. Over six days, students and staff rallied together to collect more than 1,600 nonperishable food items—surpassing last year's total by more than 500 items. All donations will be delivered to Catholic Charities, which distributes recipe bags containing specific ingredients for meals. The overall goal was to provide enough items to fill 150 recipe bags, and thanks to the incredible effort from the entire school community, we far exceeded that. Teachers and staff were assigned to homerooms to encourage participation, and those who met their goals earned a dress down today. Additionally, the top three homerooms with the most donations won a grand prize—either a pizza, donut, or ice cream party—with Mr. Bowen's ninth-grade homeroom taking first place, followed by Mr. Raseta (12th grade) and Miss Cooper (9th grade). Thank you to all the students and families who participated.
When we return from break, we are looking forward to seeing Cardinal Mooney participate in our first-ever RoboBots competition on Saturday, April 26, at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland. Administered by the Alliance for Working Together (AWT) Foundation, this program gives students a unique opportunity to partner with local manufacturers and apply hands-on STEM skills by designing and building 15-pound remote-controlled robots over a seven-month period. Our team, the Gladiators, proudly sponsored by Youngstown Pipe & Steel LLC, will compete with their robot, Shack Attack. Led by Mr. Bernard and industry advisor, Mark Canter, the student team—Roselyn Wade, Phyo Syn, Samuel Owen, Nyi Nyi Thant, Ethan Hanni, John Frommelt, and Paing Moo—have worked tirelessly on this student-driven project. The program emphasizes student ownership, creativity, and leadership, with advisors serving as mentors rather than builders. The competition concludes with awards in three categories: Best Engineered, Best Documentation, and Best Interview. We are incredibly proud of our students' dedication and innovation throughout this journey!
