Dear Mooney Family,
As many know, last May, Ohio passed legislation (HB 250) requiring that all schools have cell phone policies that emphasize limiting cell phone use and reducing cell phone-related distractions in classrooms. While virtually all schools (including Cardinal Mooney) already had cell phone policies as part of their student handbooks, the legislation has helped inspire a wave of more restrictive policies, with some schools banning all student cell phone use throughout the day.
As part of our ongoing efforts to create a positive and productive learning environment, we will conduct a comprehensive review of cell phone use among teens, and our cell phone policy, throughout this semester. This review aims to gather valuable insights and data to inform potential updates to our school's cell phone policy, which may take effect next school year. The process will include research, surveys, and group discussions, to ensure we consider multiple perspectives from students, staff, and parents alike.
Involving the entire school community in this process is key to understanding the impact of cell phone use on students' academic focus, social interactions, and overall well-being. As such, we encourage students to actively participate in the upcoming surveys and discussions, as their input will be considered in the decision-making process. Additionally, parents will have opportunities to share their thoughts through surveys and other feedback channels. We look forward to working together to find a solution that balances the benefits of technology with the need for a focused learning environment.
With that goal in mind, I am sharing an article from the Pew Research Center published last year that provides insights about teen cell phone use, its impact on teens, and parent-teen interactions.
Snow day homework
Due to the number of snow days we have accumulated this semester (five in total), we inform you that, moving forward, students may receive assignments from their teachers in the event of any future snow days. This adjustment will help ensure that students remain on track with their coursework and minimize the impact on their learning.
More specifically, in the event of a snow day, teachers have the discretion to assign students work that will be due the next class period. In that event, teachers will post assignments for that day's classes on Google Classroom and provide clear instructions and resources for completing assignments remotely. Students will be expected to check their Google Classroom and complete the work by its due date. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to maintain a consistent and productive learning experience, even during inclement weather.
Warm Regards,
|
