Students honored with Eagle Of The Cross

YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney High School students Rocco Gentile and Aidan Hryb were among 20 teens honored Monday night with the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown’s highest recognition for youth — the 2025 Eagle of the Cross Award.

The 27th annual ceremony took place at St. Columba Cathedral, where Bishop David Bonnar presented the awards to students from across the diocese who exhibit outstanding leadership, dedication and faith.

Gentile and Hryb, both seniors, were recognized for their service to their parishes, commitment to their faith, and leadership in the school and greater community. Their nominations came from parish leaders who cited their examples of Christ-centered living and positive influence among their peers.

“It’s an honor that goes beyond academics or activities,” said Cardinal Mooney campus minister, Lori Radinsky. “Rocco and Aidan are the kind of young men who live out their values every day, and we’re incredibly proud of them.”

Of the 20 teens honored, thirteen came from Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Recipients must be high school juniors or seniors and are nominated by an adult — typically a pastor, youth minister or parish leader — who has witnessed their commitment to the Church.

The Eagle of the Cross Award was created in 1998 and continues to recognize the spiritual and service-oriented contributions of young people across the Diocese of Youngstown.
