It is amazing how fast the school year has been going! With the election right around the corner, it is our goal to provide more information about the school district's upcoming operating levy which will be on the November 5 ballot.
The passage of this levy is crucial to maintaining the quality of education and support that we provide to our students every day.
If the operating levy does not pass, we will face difficult decisions regarding our district’s budget. Unfortunately, this will mean reductions in various areas, potentially affecting staff positions, programs, extra curricular and services for students that we currently offer. Reductions in any of these areas directly impact our students. While these decisions are never easy, they may necessary to ensure that we function within our financial means.
However, if the levy does pass, it will provide significant benefits to our students and schools. The additional funding will allow us to create smaller class sizes, continue to offer academic interventions, the ability to offer a wider range of programs, and provide the necessary resources for classroom instruction. It will enable us to invest in innovative educational initiatives, maintain technology, and ensure that our students have access to the best possible learning experiences. Passing the levy will also help us avoid making reductions that could negatively impact the quality of education and opportunities available to our students.
Strong schools create strong communities and this levy would allow our district and our community to stay competitive with those around us. Our priority is always to put our students first, ensuring they receive the best education possible. Whether or not the levy passes will have a direct impact on what education looks like for our students. I encourage you to stay informed about the levy and its implications for our district. Your engagement in this process will be vital as we work together to make the best decisions for the future of our students and our schools.
The Annandale community has a proud tradition of supporting our students and our schools. On November 5, our hope is that you make an informed decision about the upcoming levy. We are here to provide the facts surrounding this levy. Please reach out to me at tprom@isd876.org, call my office at 320.274.0617 or visit our Levy for Learning webpage.
On behalf of the Annandale School District, I want to thank you for your continued dedication to our students and our school community.

Increase in Pertussis Cases (whooping cough)
Wright County is seeing an increase in cases of pertussis (aka. whooping cough), with 106 reported cases so far. Because it is present in our area, it is important that our families are aware of the signs and symptoms of pertussis. Pertussis often begins with symptoms similar to the early stages of the common cold - runny nose, possible low-grade fever, and a mild cough. After a week or two, a persistent cough develops. The cough occurs in bursts and may end with a high-pitched whooping sound and sometimes vomiting. Between bursts of coughing, the child appears well. Coughing attacks may continue for four to six weeks and are more common at night. Pertussis can lead to pneumonia, particularly in infants.
Although your child(ren) may have received the pertussis vaccine, immunization is not always 100% effective and immunity decreases over time. Which is why Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is recommending that we encourage families be evaluated by a health care provider if they have a cough lasting longer than seven days. For more information about pertussis, click here.

22nd Year of Celebrating Unity Day
Unity Day was started by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. It is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention/Awareness Month in October. This is a day when our nation can come together in one giant, ORANGE message of hope and support for all. The call to action is simple: wear orange to stand for unity, inclusion, acceptance, and kindness. The first Unity Day at Annandale Elementary School was on October 10, 2012. It has been a long tradition that our staff gather in the gym on the morning of UNITY Day for a staff-wide photo.
For several years AES celebrated Unity Day annually but quickly realized that a stronger message would be to UNITE by wearing ORANGE once a month! AES now wears ORANGE the first Wednesday of every month and that tradition has been going strong for 12 years! During Unity Days our staff incorporates classroom and school-wide activities and lessons with different themes. Past themes have included; Friendship, Generosity, Inclusion, Acceptance, Kindness, and Compassion. We are looking forward to another successful year full of Unity, Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion!

Parents interested in getting involved? Our second Parent Advisory Council meeting will take place Monday, November 11, from 6-7:30PM. Join us to learn what is going on in our high school and help drive important decisions.
Recently, our staff facilitated brainstorming with our students during our advisory time, focusing on their Diploma+ experience at Annandale High School. In early phases we heard from and surveyed our students on experiences that they valued most throughout high school as well as areas of interest they would like to experience while here. In many cases we were able to share more about current experiences and ideas that may inspire innovations to our existing programming and possibilities for the future. We want ALL of our students to graduate with a Diploma + 3 areas of readiness: college (2 or 4 year) career, and life skills. Thank you, staff and students, for taking time to work together on shaping a shared vision!
