Virtual Exchange Student Host Family Opportunity
Open your family's home to a student from Lebanon, Pakistan, Jordan, Mozambique, Indonesia, Kenya, Romania, Bangladesh, Egypt, Georgia, or Kyrgyzstan!

Families that are interested in opening the virtual door to their homes to an exchange student should apply today. Families commit to spending approximately 3 hours per month from January to May 22 with their virtual son or daughter. These students are highly motivated and are eager to engage in learning about the US and practicing their English with HISD families. You can cook together, tour each other’s homes/cities, talk about sports/movies/hobbies and so much more during your time together. To get started, please do the following:

  1. Read the following 1-page document (http://bit.ly/virtualhostfamilyinfo ) and complete Virtual Host Family Sign-up Survey (http://bit.ly/virtualhostfamilysignup ) NO later than Sunday, January 10th, 2021.
  2. Start your AFS-USA Volunteer Registration HERE ( https://www.afsusa.org/volunteer-with-afs/ ) NO later than Sunday, January 10th, 2021.
  3. Commit to prioritizing the components of the volunteer registration throughout the week of January 11th, 2021. The volunteer registration includes: A background check, submitting references (that have to complete a short form), an interview with a local AFS volunteer and completing 2 online training modules. (It’s not as bad as it sounds.)
  4. Start brainstorming what fun activities you will do with your virtual host son or daughter! Your semester with them will go quickly and be so much fun!!
Virtual Tour of Peru
All Bellaire students are invited to join us for a virtual tour of Peru on Wednesday, January 13. Our tour guide, Nila Soto, will be joining us live from Lima where she will be sharing about her indigenous Andean community.

***The time of the virtual tour this week has been moved to 3:10 PM because of the PSAT!
PSAT for 9th Graders
Freshmen will have the opportunity to take the PSAT for 9th graders during the school day, on campus. The school-day PSAT will take place on Wednesday, January 13th. The PSAT for 9th graders is optional. Information regarding the PSAT, as well as the registration form, has been emailed to all freshmen through their HISD student email. Registration is closed. For questions regarding testing, contact Ms. Mulet at mmulet1@houstonisd.org.
9th Grade PGPs Sent to each Student's HISD Email Account
Bellaire Counselors met with students the week of November 16 to review their personal graduation plan and the graduation requirements. A Personal Graduation Plan (PGP) is a form that must be on file for every student. The PGP designates the endorsement the student is on, establishes post-high school goals, career interests and tracks grades throughout high school. Every 9th grade student will select the Multidisciplinary endorsement as a starting point. This means they will earn four credits of the core subjects- English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, including Algebra 2 and Chemistry or Physics/ Principles of Technology. More endorsements can be added later, depending on the choices students choose for their electives as they proceed through high school.
Please watch this screencast to learn how to complete the form correctly.

Once you have downloaded the form, completed it and signed it, it should be saved to your computer. The form can then be submitted through the link below.

***Can't sign your form electronically? Make sure you have downloaded and then opened it in Adobe Reader. You will not be able to sign the form in your browser window.
