Soccer
This has been a season of adversity and difficulty for the Sacred Heart Varsity soccer team, but of late, not one of frustration. Given all of our challenges, over the past month these girls have grown and developed at an incredible pace. With every game we have played, our success in our style of play continued to improve, regardless of score. So when we stepped on the pitch to play the strong Division II side from Ben Franklin, the Cardinals were confident and ready. Once again, we came out playing very well, possessing the ball over our opponent. But a very unlucky own goal put us in an early hole 1-0. We then fell behind 2-0 with a Franklin goal off a corner and, quite honestly, just a fantastic header. We made it easier by not marking her as tightly as needed, but nevertheless, very much an earned goal. At half we were down 2-0, while still controlling possession and outplaying our opponent in everything but scoring opportunities. In the second half, we continued to push and started to create more chances. At the end of the day, we were caught on the counter and on yet another set piece allowing 2 more late goals. In this game, I truly believe that we played well enough to win against an outstanding team. We are so very close to putting this whole thing together. Once we clean up the little things, we’ll be there.
Next match was on Friday evening at Fisher. While we were playing a game that on paper we should win, you can never take any opponent for granted. The team had a strong warm-up and throughout the game executed our new aggressive offensive plan of attack. The Cardinals hit the ground running and the team hit it fast! Our movement on and off the ball was fantastic, literally building up from our defensive third, through the middle third and finishing off of crosses and through balls. Yes, we should have won the game, but you still have to go out, do it right and execute, and we did. We played a beautiful game of soccer. Winning 8-0, this match featured great goals by Sinclair Nolan ’23, Ana Watson ’23, Martha Hammett ’23 (2 goals), CC Johnson ’23, Madeline Kessels ’22 and Mia Dreiling ’24 (2 goals). This match was a much needed victory!

Basketball
The varsity basketball team had two tough games this week, but despite the results of each, both contests demonstrated the talent and potential of this group.

One of the basketball team’s fiercest rivals, Pope John Paul, ventured to the Rosary Gym to take on the Cardinals Wednesday night. Broadcast on Cox Sports Television (CST), featuring Cooper Manning on the color commentary, the game was certain to be competitive. In the first half, the Cardinals had some trouble with Pope’s outside shooting, leading to a large first half deficit. Renewed and determined, Sacred Heart came out fighting in the second half, outscoring the Jaguars 19-17. The Cardinals out hustled Pope, exemplified by Cassidy Lambert ’21, who fought for every single loose ball. Unfortunately, after going for a particularly important loose ball in the third, she crashed into the wall at full speed and had a season-ending injury. The team will miss her tenacity and persistence, especially on defense, and everyone in the basketball program is hoping and praying for her speedy recovery. Despite the second-half push, Sacred Heart was unable to overcome the deficit built up from the first half. Elizabeth Brooks ’21 led all Cardinal scorers with ten points and also contributed six steals. Leah Goody ’21 helped to lead the second half charge, including a pair of key free throws in the final quarter.
On Thursday, varsity returned to action to face St. Scholastica. The Cardinals nearly topped a strong 8-4 team, and a number of Cardinals had their best game of the season. The Cardinals kept it close all game, going into the half only down by three. Led by Izabella Erazo ’22, who recorded three blocks on the day, the Cardinal defense held tough in the third, limiting the Doves to just 7 points. In the fourth, Lillian Balart ’22 led a scoring charge, giving Sacred Heart a 36-34 advantage with only a few minutes remaining. Unfortunately, a few shots from Scholastica dropped in the last two minutes, and Sacred Heart was unable to prevail, falling 40-36. The Cardinals are eagerly anticipating their rematch with the Doves in Covington in early February. Only three rebounds away from a double-double, May Manning ’21 led all scorers with 19 points, including 10 in the second quarter alone, both of which were season records for the team. Adriana Mehaffie ’21 contributed 14 rebounds.

On Tuesday, the 7th/8th soccer Red Team played another game outside of the NOAL league and traveled to play a quality and physical Vandebilt Catholic team in cold weather. It was an opportunity for the girls to figure out things ‘on the fly’ against a team with players they had not seen before, and the Red Team did just that. In the first half, the Red Team’s play and passing were stellar; it was the best they had played all year. Unfortunately, Vandebilt Catholic scored on a very unlucky break that was very much against the run of play. The Red Team possessed the ball for over 20 of the 30 minutes in that half. That possession helped the Red Team earn a penalty kick which was knocked in by Sally Irwin ’26 to tie the score. In the second half, the Red Team stepped up their physicality, and they possessed the ball well but could not quite get the ball in the net again. (It did not help that the team was missing its leading scorer.) Neither team scored in the second half and the game ended in a tie. This Vandebilt Catholic team attacked the wings throughout the game. and the Red Team’s two new starters at wing defender, Lily Rosenstein ’26 and Olivia Monsted ’26, both played very well. This was a great game to build on as the Red Team finishes league play this week before heading into the playoffs.
On Wednesday, the 7/8th White soccer team played Ursuline 7/8th. It was a fast and physical game. The Cardinals were not victorious on the scoreboard, but did show that their training is
paying off. In practice, the girls have been working on controlling the ball while dribbling. This game highlighted the fast moving dribbling skills of Libby Stassi ’26 and Elodie Scafidel ’26. They were able to break through traffic and move the ball down the field, maintaining possession. Cece Pinkerton ’26 has been a star keeper all season, making gutsy saves and helping manage the team from the back.

The 7th/8th basketball team took on the ladies of Newman on January 13th to kick off the new year. This was only the second contest of the season for this group, and they were very excited to get back in action. The game started off with the Cardinals getting off to a 6-0 lead, turning tenacious defense into easy buckets. Newman was able to creep back into the game during the first half with numerous lead changes. Newman led at the half, 11-10. In the 2nd half, the Cardinals turned up the defensive effort led by Leah Varisco ’26, Sophie Lo ’26, and Lily Rosenstein ’26, locking up every ball handler Newman sent their way. Along with monster rebounding efforts by Eleanor Erazo-Pierson ’26, and Sally Irwin ’26, Sacred Heart was able to hold the Newman team to only 2 points in the entire second half! This gave Sacred Heart the momentum they needed on the offensive end as they poured in 16 points in the second half to win the game, 26-13. Leah Varsico led the team in scoring with great bench help from Gray Gibbs ’26, and Avery Cheatham ’26. The team has three games this week vs. Country Day, McGehee and St. Andrew’s Episcopal.
The 5th/6th grade team played Kehoe France in the Rosary gym, winning 26-3. This game was a great opportunity to play all ten players dressed out and to continue to focus on strong defensive and offensive fundamentals. Leading the way offensively was Lily Varisco ’27 with 14 points. Caroline Kenter ’27 scored 2 great buckets from the baseline and scoring her first point of the season from the free throw line was Lucille Dansereau ‘28. There were strong performances both offensively and defensively coming from Caroline Balart ’27, Elizabeth Alford ’27, and Camille Tyler ’27. Maddie McNabb ’28 played tenacious defense throughout the game. Next up is rival Country Day this afternoon.
