Basketball Goes 1-1 for the Week
|
The Varsity basketball team faced Patrick Taylor on Tuesday. Each quarter was evenly matched as the Cardinals led by two points or less in the first half. Sacred Heart came out strong in the third quarter and found a way to take a five point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams gave their best and final effort and the final eight minutes would prove to be a nailbiter. But the Cardinals found a way to win with a score of 29-27 and gave the team its third straight victory.
Adriana Mehaffie ’21 had an outstanding game leading the team with a double-double. She had a game high 12 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
Lindsey Magaw ’21 also chipped in with 11 points and 5 steals.
On Thursday, the Cardinals hosted Pearl River. Sacred Heart had a tough time stopping Pearl River’s fast paced offense. The Cardinals would come up short but would use this game to improve on defense, ball handling, and seeing open teammates. Leading scorers for the Cardinals were
Adriana Mehaffie ’21 with 10 points,
Elizabeth Brooks ’21 with 8 points including two 3-pointers, and
Lindsey Magaw ’21 with 7 points.

Soccer Continues to Give Great Effort
Last week, the Cardinals had two games against challenging opponents. On Wednesday, they faced a very strong Division I opponent in Dominican. In the first half, the Cardinals played very strong defensively and created several chances on goal but couldn’t take advantage. A score of 0-0 was very encouraging going into the half. Unfortunately, the team tired defensively in the second half and ended up conceding goals and fell 0-3. Still, super proud of the girls and a special shoutout to keeper
Daisy Mooney ’23 and the rest of the defense for a strong performance against a very good opponent. The second game was a tale of two halves in the unseasonable heat. In the first half, Sacred Heart came out flat and gave up a goal. In the second half, the Cardinals created multiple great chances on goal but could not put them away. Sacred Heart would eventually lose 0-1 in a game they deserved to win. Up next is Newman on Friday!
JV soccer had an amazing week! The team picked their three team captains this week. Each player had an opportunity to be captain for a game and the team then voted
Mary Schmidt ’24,
Madeline Kessels ’22, and
Anna Grace Dreiling ’22 as captains for the rest of the season. On Saturday, the Cards defeated E.D. White 2-0! Goals were scored by
Anna Watson ’23 and
Madeline Kessels ’22. The Cardinals play Newman on Friday in an exciting rivalry game! Go Cards!

Prep Basketball Goes 4-0 for the Week
The Prep Basketball program had a strong showing last week. The 7th grade team traveled to Newman on Tuesday. The Cardinals took many shots but were unable to get them to fall. Down by six points headed into the 4th quarter, the Cardinals made some adjustments and the shots began to fall. A seven point 4th quarter brought the Cardinals even with the Greenies at the end of regulation. The Cardinals were headed into overtime! With the score tied at 13-13 and one minute left in overtime,
Bria Egana ’25 was fouled and sent to the free throw line. Bria sank the free throw to give the Cardinals a one point lead. The Cardinals’ defense held strong for the final minute to clinch an overtime victory over Newman!
Natalia Mehaffie ’25 led the offense with 8 points.
On Wednesday, Prep Basketball played a doubleheader. The 5th/6th Red team led off the afternoon with a victory over McGehee. The team put up 33 points in the victory and was led by
Leah Varisco ’26 who contributed 13. Next, the 7th grade team took on Christian Brothers. This was another nail biter. The Cardinals trialed 10-9 heading into the 4th quarter. The Cardinals put up 6 points and held Christian Brothers to 4 to secure a 15-14 victory.
Natalia Mehaffie ’25 contributed 5 points, and
Audrey Rose Lavie ’25 and
Taylor Roberts ’25 each contributed 3 points.
On Thursday, the 5th/6th Black team traveled to Country Day and secured a 23-14 victory. The Cardinals showed great improvement in their defense fundamentals. The offense was led by
Lily Varisco ’27 and
Elizabeth Alford ’27. The 5th/6th White team played at McGehee and put up an impressive 40 points! The Cardinals improved their passing and did a great job of switching up their defensive systems. The White team was led by
Nandita Menon ’26 who had numerous rebounds and put 14 points on offense.
