Indoor Track Kicks Off the Season
|
The Indoor Track and Field Team kicked off the 2020 season this past Saturday, January 25 at L.S.U. It was the first time for a number of athletes to compete in an indoor meet.
LuLu Real ’23 was the first athlete for the Cardinals to open the season, and she literally jumped her way into the record books on her first attempt in the Long Jump with a new school record leap of 15' 5.5" which was good enough for 12th place out of 75 jumpers.
Elaine Marie Ehrensing ’24 and
Isabelle Moore ’23 put their training to the test in the High Jump. There were 44 jumpers in the competition, and the girls gained valuable experience during it. Isabelle had three very nice attempts at the opening height and improved on each one, but jumped a little too far away from the bar, causing her to hit it on the way down. She definitely has the ability to clear it in the near future. Elaine Marie was successful on her attempts of 4' 4" and 4' 7" and nearly cleared 4' 10" twice with just her heel catching the bar also on the way down. Her clearances found her tied for 11th place which is a wonderful beginning to her varsity career.
Mykhala Coleman ’21 participated in the Shot Put and tossed the 8 lb 8 ounce ball to a distance of 34' 8.75" which was good enough for a 6th place finish out of 57 throwers.
LuLu Real ’23 and
Aaliyah Oro ’24 ran their hardest in the 60 Meter dash, posting times of 8.70 and 9.07 seconds. Emily LeBlanc ’21 ran 11.00 seconds in the 60 Meter Hurdles which helped her finish in 16th place out of 32 hurdlers.
The last event for the Cardinals was the 4 x 800 M Relay in which the team finished in 9th out of 17 teams in a time of 11:22. The team consisted of
Caroline Nusloch ’21 - 2:54.85,
Emily LeBlanc ’21 - 2:48.29,
Olivia Gaines ’20 - 2:42.15, and
McCall Schlosser ’22 - 2:57.11 The meet was a very nice start to the indoor season. The next meet is Saturday, Feb. 8 back at L.S.U.

Soccer Picks up the Pace
After a rough previous week of games, varsity soccer picked up the pieces to face our most exciting rivalry game versus Newman. We had a full week of training to prepare for the district game.
On a sunny breezy Saturday morning, the Cardinals stepped on to Newman’s field expecting a great battle, and that’s exactly what happened. Sacred Heart was down 2-0 by half time, but did not give up on trying to come back on the scoreboard. The Cardinals were able to put a goal in the net halfway through the second half. The goal came from
Martha Hammett ’23
, with the assist from
Kamri Washington ’20
. The game ended 2-1 in favor of the Greenies, but the way the team played it felt like a win.
On a cold and muddy Monday night, Sacred Heart traveled to Slidell focused on a win. Within two minutes of the game,
Martha Hammet ’23
had an amazing shot from outside the box scoring the first goal of the game and giving that early adrenaline to the team. The girls showed to everyone that was out there that they can really play a great style of soccer and that their confidence is everything they need in order to achieve positive results. They worked hard the entire game, and
Carolina Mehaffie ’23
scored the second goal from an assist from
Martha Hammet ’23
.
Olivia McGoey ’21
ran the show on the midfield, and towards the end of the first half she had a great shot from outside the box, forcing the keeper to give a rebound. Little did they know that
Gabby Thibodaux ’21
was right there to shoot the rebound in the net. The Cardinals were now up 3-1.
In the second half,
Olivia McGoey ’21
dribbled inside of PJP’s box and the defender knocked her down causing a PK for the Cardinals.
Monet Menard ’20
showed up with her leadership and confidence to put that fourth goal in for the score. The girls left Slidell with a sense of mission accomplished and are looking forward to their next match against Northlake Christian on Jan 29th at 6:00 pm at Tad Gormley. Please come support our soccer team on our continuous growth.

Basketball Enjoys Some Fun Off the Court
With an unexpected game cancelled last Thursday, the varsity basketball team enjoyed an afternoon of fun and friendly competition on another playing field. They traveled to Metairie to compete against each other in bumper cars and laser tag. The red team had a dominating performance in laser tag, and
Elise Vickery ’21
reigned as high scorer for the day! The Cardinals return to competition this Thursday at home against Ursuline. Go Cardinals!

Prep Basketball looks Strong Heading into the Postseason
The prep basketball teams have wrapped up the regular season. Last Tuesday, we had a pair of nail biters in Rosary Gym. The 5th/6th Red team played Hynes and heading into the 4th quarter the Cardinals had a 13-8 lead. However, it came down to the final seconds and the Cardinals’ defense that earned them the 14-13 victory.
Leah Varsico ’26 led the team with 8 points. The 7th grade team followed with their own exciting game. The Cardinals trailed 8-11 heading into the final quarter. The Cardinals stepped up their offensive and defensive game and were able to put up 6 points in the 4th to give them a 14-13 victory over Christian Brothers.
On Wednesday, the 5th and 6th graders split up into a red and white team and played against each other. It was a fun game that displayed how hard these young Cardinals have worked throughout the season. The coaches enjoyed the spirit and the heart the student-athletes showed.
On Monday, the 7th grade played in the last game of the regular season against Country Day. Like many of their games, it came down to the final seconds of the game. Unfortunately, Country Day hit a basket that put them up by 1 with 30 seconds left. The Cardinals were unable to get the victory but look forward to the rematch in the Championship tournament.
The 7th grade finished the regular season with an impressive 5-2 record. The 5th/6th Red team followed this exciting game with their own game against Country Day. The team took control from the beginning with their offense and focused on their defensive systems in preparation for the Championship tournament. The team put up an impressive 33 points on their way to victory. The 5th/6th Red team completed the regular season with an undefeated record in the league. Their only loss occurred against an older Ursuline team during the season. They have secured the #1 seed and will compete in the NOAL Championship tournament this week. Good luck prep basketball in the postseason!
