Volleyball Defeats Newman in Three Sets
The JV and varsity volleyball teams only had one match this week, but it was a big one, as the Newman Greenies visited Rosary Gym last Tuesday. For JV, the first set was close for a while, but Ellie Bendich ’24 had a huge block to make the score 9-7 in favor of the Cardinals. Shortly after, Brooke Habetz ’23 came up to serve and she started a run of 10 straight points. Riding that wave of momentum, the JV closed out the first game 25-11. The second set once again started off with a back and forth type of game until the trademark tough Cardinal serving started to force the Newman serve reception into making errors. Serving up some crucial aces were Lucy Vaicius ’23, Allie Langhetée ’23, Paige Ready ’23, Kate Farris ’24, and Isabelle Moore ’23. Also contributing were Gigi Gibbens ’24 and Kate Farris ’24 with some big blocks as well as some solid hitting from the three right side hitters, Mary Elise Meyer ’24, Claire Vanderbrook ’23, and Lily Stone ’24. The Cardinals went on to win the second set 25-15 and close out the match. Kudos to Lucy Vaicius ’23 as she achieved over 100 Consecutive serves without a miss. The Varsity team would start out strong as they roared ahead 11-1 in the first game on pinpoint laser serves by Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21 and some early kills by May Manning ’21. In emotional matches like the Newman and Sacred Heart game, it’s critical to set an aggressive tempo from the start, and the Cardinals were relentless. Sacred Heart’s serve receive game was spectacular with Bailey Axelrad ’21, May Manning ’21, and Cat Bonura ’22 repelling the Greenie serves.
Game two was a little closer than Sacred Heart would have liked. Late in the game the Greenies were ahead 22-21, but the Cardinals fought hard behind a crucial block by Riley Brennan ’21 and strong net play from May Manning ’21 to prevail, 26-24.
Game three started very much like the first game with Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21 serving strong. Marian Graffignini ’22 also served well and had two kills down the line. MC Mazzanti ’23 was a hammer on the left side, and Lindsey Magaw ’21 came off a two week break with a back injury and performed really well. Mazzanti and Magaw both had five kills, and May Manning ’21 had 14 kills. Bailey Axelrad ’21 and Cat Bonura ’22 led the team in digs. On Tuesday, the varsity will take on Cohen at home and on Friday, both teams will battle on the road against Chapelle.

Special shout out to Elise Vickery ’21 for achieving her best times since she began swimming at Sacred Heart in 2015. On top of this, she has also competed in every available event high school swimming has offered doing whatever it takes to help the team. This past meet, the only event she had left on her list was the grueling 500-yard freestyle. She successfully completed this event with an outstanding time. Great job, Elise!

Impressive Finishes for Prep Cross Country
The Middle School cross country team participated in the St. Martin’s Mole Hill Run at Lafreniere Park on Wednesday Oct 7th. The team entered a 5th/6th grade team and a 7th/8th grade team. This race was limited to nine runners per team in each division. The first race of the day was for the 5th-6th grade team and this was their first race of the season. The girls were very nervous and excited at the same time. They took their place on the starting line, said a quick prayer, and got into their starting position.
Lily Varisco ’27 took the early lead and hung on until about 200 meters to go. Lily tried her best to win the race but finished 2nd overall with a very gutsy performance and a time of 10:33. Courtney Habetz ’28 and Rosie Varisco ’28 finished 3rd and 4th overall and ran most of the race stride for stride with a smile on their faces. Ellie Garrett ’28 and Molly O’Sullivan ’28 were the other 5th graders for the Cardinals. They attacked the course like veteran runners and finished strong. Every competitor for Sacred Heart finished in the top 15 and earned a prized t-shirt from the race. The team scored a very impressive score of 17 points overall to lead the Cardinals to the first place team title.
The 7th-8th grade girls competed in the 2nd race of the day. CeCe Pinkerton ’26 finished 13th overall, Taylor Robert ’25 12th overall, and Maddie Do ’25 15th overall to lead the team and earn a prized t-shirt. Also helping the Cardinals to their 3rd place finish and scoring for the team were Emery Nolan ’25 and Edie Yockey ’26.
