Former LSU Gymnast McKenna Kelly will be on Campus Tuesday, October 22nd
|
McKenna Kelley is a former two-time LSU All-American, All-SEC performer, and the 2017 SEC Floor Exercise Champion as a Tiger gymnast. Her success wasn't just as an athlete as she was also a four-time All-SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.
She graduated in May of 2019 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology and has since begun her career as a motivational speaker. If you are unfamiliar with her career/story, she tore her Achilles leading her to miss her junior season.
"This was easily the best year of my life!" Though she couldn’t compete, she leaned on her faith and learned far more valuable lessons about life, herself and gymnastics!
McKenna is the daughter of Shannon Kelly, a former quarterback of the Texas Longhorns, and Mary Lou Retton, a gold medalist for the USA in the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. She also has three sisters, Shayla, Skyla, and Emma.
She started, “Write Your Story,” in hopes of inspiring YOU, that no matter what obstacle life throws at you, you have the power to WRITE YOUR STORY. This is what she learned through her own injury, and her heart is set on fire to share her story to help gymnasts, athletes, and others to have this perspective as well!
Thank you Booster Club for sponsoring this event!

Swimming Wins the St. Martin’s Meet!
Congratulations to our swimmers for an impressive showing at the Newman Meet this past Saturday. It was a long meet with plenty of excitement for everyone. All of our Sacred Heart Cardinals swam well. Congratulations to
Shannon Plough '20 for swimming the 200yd Individual Medley for the first time in many years and making a state time.
Also, congrats to
Isabelle DeGruy '24 and
Claire Parrish '25 for swimming the 500yd freestyle for the first time. One swimmer loved it, the other hated it, but both made Coach Kara very proud to be their coach. Both girls also swam their best time in the 50yd free.
Next up is the District Meet on Wednesday, October 16 at UNO. This is also our swimming Senior Night so if you haven’t made a meet yet, this is the one to be there for!

Cross Country Team Sets New Personal Records
|
Cooler temperatures accounted for faster races time this past Saturday in the Catholic High Invite in Baton Rouge. The first race began at 8:30 a.m., which was the varsity 3 mile. The three runners that did not leave town due to the Fall break took full advantage of the perfect running conditions.
Olivia Gaines '20,
Caroline Nusloch '21, and
Andrea Bohórquez '20 made their way to the starting line wearing their Sacred Heart pink singlets supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which has become a tradition over the last five years.
Coach Greg laid out the game plan for each of them. Push your pace early on and work hard on the second mile to get yourself into a position to finish with something left for the final straightaway. Both Gaines and Nusloch ran in tandem for nearly the entire race, working together to go for new personal records as did Bohórquez, running just slightly behind them. Their first and second miles were identical in 6:35 and 6:49, coming through the 2-mile marker in 13:24. It was not until the last 400 meters that Gaines slightly separated herself and ran her last mile nine seconds faster than her previous one in 6:40 to finish just in 20:05, just 13 seconds shy of her best ever, but her fastest race in the last two years. Because of her pace, Caroline Nusloch '21 dropped an amazing 26 seconds off of her previous best record and finished in 20:14. While these two were pushing each other, Andrea Bohórquez '20 ran herself to a 49-second personal record of 21:54; an excellent time considering her previous two weeks of training were hampered by aggregated shin splints. Great race by these three runners!

Volleyball Sweeps Opponents
Last week, JV and Varsity volleyball continued district play on Tuesday with a match against De La Salle. JV kicked off the night in a dominant fashion, as the Cardinal swept the Cavaliers 25-10, 25-14. The Cardinals controlled the match with strong serving. Varsity fed off the momentum of JV and controlled the first set from behind the service line. De La Salle made some adjustments in set two to inch closer to the Cardinals, but varsity was able to clinch the set. In set three, the Cardinals were very disciplined and sealed the match sweep over De La Salle.
On Thursday, the Cardinals traveled to Ursuline to participate in a Pink game. JV continued their momentum from Tuesday, and the Cardinals earned a two set sweep in a festive atmosphere. The gym atmosphere grew in spirit as it was time for the Varsity match. The battle started from the start of the first set with Ursuline taking a couple of four point leads throughout the first set. Each time, the Lions took the lead, the Cardinals would battle back. The Cardinals took the lead at 20-19 in set one, and then the score would be tied at 21, 22, and 23 before the Cardinals earned at 25-23 victory in set one. In set two, the Cardinals led set two, and the Lions continued to claw to be within one, but they were never able to tie the game, and the Cardinals earned the second set victory 25-22. In set three, the Ursuline Lions controlled the majority of the set until the Cardinals were able to go up 21-20.
With the sweep on the line, the Cardinals increased their intensity and discipline to earn the third set victory 25-22 and a match sweep over Ursuline. Juniors
Lindsey Magaw and
May Manning led the offense with a combined total of 31 kills. Sophomore
Marian Graffagnini led our setters with 27 assists, and Junior libero
Bailey Axelrad led the defense with 27 digs.
JV and Varsity will finish up District play at home on Tuesday against St. Katharine Drexel, and play Cabrini at home on Thursday. JV plays at 4:30 followed by Varsity on both days.

Last week, Middle School volleyball enjoyed a week of mostly practice. It was a great week to continue to fine-tune their fundamentals in preparation for the upcoming NOAL tournaments.
The 7/8 Black team did host one day of competitions. On Thursday, Newman and Country Day traveled to Rosary Gym to compete in doubleheader matches. Sacred Heart lost to both Country Day teams but in two very close matches.
Sierra Pardue '24 recorded nine aces along with
Mignon Sewell '24 who scored on five aces and did a fantastic job of setting.
Virginia Gardes '24 was able to score on four kills as well. Good luck next week against Newman and Christian Brothers!
