Cross Country
With the cooler temperatures finally arriving on Saturday morning, the runners that were able to participate in the St. Thomas Aquinas Invitational took full advantage of the much better race conditions and environment with 111 total runners in the race. Olivia Boyd '22 ran her best race of her senior year to date by completing the 3-mile course in 21:08 for 19th place overall. Olivia has worked extremely hard the last two years to work her way back into the talented runner that she has been and proves once again that hard work and determination do pay off. Charlotte Johnston '26 in 21:44 and 33rd place ran a season best time while moving herself through the crowd of runners during the race. Katherine Benton '24 tied her personal best record of 22:43 by dropping her time by over one minute from her previous season's best. Katherine has been also working very hard during the last two weeks of practice and she is starting to reap the benefits of that training.
In the Junior Varsity 3-mile race, Colette Shannon '25 set a new personal record with a time of 25:47, while Juliet Boyd '24 in 26:52 also enjoyed a new personal record by nearly one minute. Eileen Igoe '25, in her first race of her young career, ran two miles in 17:28 to make her debut on the Cross Country team.
The entire team will be in action this Saturday, October 23 in City Park at the Brother Martin Jack Schommer Invitational on the corner of Diagonal and Harrison. This meet will serve as our District Championship, so please try and come out to support your Cardinals.
Race times are:
8:20 a.m. - Varsity 3-mile
9:40 a.m. - Junior Varsity 3-mile
10:20 am - Junior Varsity 2-mile

Attacking at the net were hitters Gigi Gibbens ‘24 (10 kills), Cami Davis ‘23 (13 kills), MC Mazzanti ‘23 (25 kills), and Isabelle Moore ‘23 (8 kills). Leading our defense on serve receive and digs were Catherine Bonura ‘22 (24 digs), Katherine Hale ‘23 (16 digs), Kate Ready ‘22 (6 digs), Lucy Vacius ‘23 (6 digs), and Isabella Erazo ‘22 (11 digs). The team totaled last week with 18 aces. There are just a few weeks left in the season and the team is working hard to get better every day. Go Cardinals!

On Wednesday, the Country Day Cajuns JV came to visit Sacred Heart with revenge on their minds, as the JV Cardinals had defeated them in an exciting three game match earlier this month at Country Day. The first set went back and forth several times, tied at 16, 18 and 19 before the Cajuns pulled away for a 25-21 win. The second set started off poorly for the Cardinals as they fell way behind 11-1 and then 20-10. The Cardinals started to slowly inch their way back into the game. One point at a time they fought back to get to 24-19. At that point Ellie Bendich ’24 went back to serve, and when she was done the game was tied at 24. The Cajuns took the lead at 26-25, but the Cardinals closed the gap and took the set 28-26 in a very exciting finish. Kate Farris ’24 and Mary Elise Meyer ’24 had some crucial kills during the comeback, and Lily Stone ’24 added five assists and two kills to the mix. Claire Moriarty ’25 served tough, and Natalia Mehaffie ’25 had two nice kills as well during the set. After burning a lot of adrenaline during the big comeback, the Cardinals came out a little flat in the final set and ended up on the short end of the score 15-11.
The following day, the Crescent City Pioneers came uptown to take on the ASH JV. In the first set, the Cardinals looked like they were still recovering from the prior day’s match. They started slow before finally coming back and winning 25-18. In the second set, the all freshmen team took the court and did well, winning the set 25-11. Bria Egana ’25 had two big blocks and two kills. Taylor Robert ’25 played well as the libero, and Charlotte Bush ’25 and Evelyn Monsted ’25 did well handling the outside hitting duties. Callie Parenton ’25 played the right side spot and had a kill and a block. The ASH JV went 1-1 for the week and will play De La Salle today. JV starts at 4:30 followed by varsity. Good luck!

The 6th Red team then competed against Lusher on Wednesday and dominated in both games scoring 25-5, 25-5. Sarah Wanek ’28 had a total of 33 aces for the week. The 8th Black team also beat Lusher with ease winning 25-6, 25-9.
To wrap up the week, the 8th Black and 7th Red teams competed in the AOL Tournament. Both teams went undefeated in pool play and would win their semifinal games to create a Sacred Heart versus Sacred Heart final. In the end, the 8th Black team would prevail, but it was a great day of volleyball and a fun way to end the tournament as Champions and Runner-Up!
