Important - Prep Winter Sports Registration
|
In order to prepare our staff and begin our scheduling process, we need to have accurate numbers in each sport. Please take a second to register your daughter for 5th-8th soccer and/or basketball. This is mandatory, and your daughter may not be able to join a team without prior registration. Both sports will begin in mid-November and will continue through the month of January. Practice days have not been determined yet. If you have any questions, please contact Associate Athletic Director Lanie Victory at [email protected].

Cross Country is Tested Against Division Opponent
On Saturday in City Park, the Sacred Heart cross country team competed in the Brother Martin Jack Schommer Invitational Meet. The number one ranked Cardinals from E.D. White High School had come to town, and Sacred Heart was excited to try and see how they stacked up against them. The runners had already seen the current standings based on the individual best times thus far in the season and stepped up to the challenge. Olivia McGoey ’21 ran to the front of the pack and never looked back, crossing the finish line in 19:25, nearly one full minute ahead of E.D. White's first runner.
|
Leah Varisco ’26, Olivia Boyd ’22, Caroline Nusloch ’21, Charlotte Johnston ’26, and Vivian Real ’26 all pushed the pace early to test their training. They crossed the 1 mile marker between 6:37 - 6:45 with only eight seconds separating the pack and continued to work together going back and forth. They crossed the 2 mile marker between 13:44 - 14:10 with only 26 seconds between the pack. Mariella Congeni ’23 rounded out our Top 7 runners and worked her way through the pack and held a nice pace while working on her strategy of keeping the others in her sights. With the finish line approaching quickly with only 400 meters to go, the runners made their final push to pass anyone in front of them, and crossed the line knowing that they had given their all on this day. Well done, Cardinals!

Volleyball Faces Tough Competition with Exciting Matches
The Sacred Heart volleyball teams went on the road for two matches last week. On Tuesday, they traveled to Slidell to take on Pope John Paul. Both JV and V were hard fought matches with some very solid back and forth play from both teams.
Unfortunately, the JV Cardinals were outscored 25-20, 25-19 and dropped the match. The Cardinals had some big kills from Kate Farris ’24, Gigi Gibbens ’24, Mary Elise Meyer ’24, and Claire Vanderbrook ’24. Adding pressure from the serving line were Brooke Habetz ’23 and Lucy Vaicius ’23. The varsity match would be another thriller, as the Cardinals battled perennial Division IV State Champion Pope John Paul and played valiantly in a five game match, 21-25, 11-25, 25-21, 30-28, 8-15.
Although Sacred Heart ended up on the losing side, the series was loaded with superb heart-stopping plays from both teams. In the first game, Riley Brennan ’21 went down with an ankle injury so May Manning ’21 took over the middle, and Isabella Guarisco ’21 filled May’s spot. May had 19 kills, Lindsey Magaw ’21 had 15 kills, and MC Mazzanti ’23 finished with 9 kills. Bailey Axelrad ’21 and Cat Bonura ’22 again dove all over the floor to keep the rallies going. Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21, and Marian Graffagnini ’22 distributed the attacks and made smart choices throughout the contest.
On Thursday, the Cardinals traveled to Old Metairie to take on the Country Day Cajuns. The ASH JV team started slowly in game one and fell 25-20. In game two they played much better but made a few too many unforced errors near the end of the set, and lost 25-22. Coming up with some big swings were Isabelle Moore ’23, Kate Farris ’24, and Mary Elise Meyer ’24. Gigi Gibbens ’24 added five blocks, and Allie Langhetée ’23 and Kate Farris ’24 each had two aces. The Cardinals also welcomed Cecile Thomas ’23 back to the court after being out a large part of the season due to injury. She came in and added a big boost to our serving and back row play. The varsity team would follow against the Division V State Champion Cajuns. It would be another five game thriller for the varsity, but this time the Cardinals came out on top, 15-25, 29-27, 17-25, 25-21,15-9. Lindsey Magaw ’21 chipped in for 25 kills, MC Mazzanti ’23 for 17 kills and May Manning ’21 with five kills. Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21 led the team with aces and assists. Bailey Axelrad ’21, May Manning ’21, and Cat Bonura ’22 had some key digs to down the Cajuns on their home court.
Varsity’s third game of the week was against Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau. The Cardinals handled them well, winning in three games straight, 25-12, 25-16, 25-18. May Manning ’21 and Lindsey Magaw ’21 both added 14 kills, and MC Mazzanti ’23 and Marian Graffagnini ’22 with five kills each.
The team looks forward to battling Northlake Christian today at home to wrap up our regular season. This will also be Senior Night for our seven seniors. Stay strong and play hard, Cardinals!
