Cross Country Battles Tough Conditions
This past Saturday, the Sacred Heart cross county team competed in Baton Rouge at Highland Road Park for the St. Joseph's Invitational. The sloppy, wet, hilly and muddy course was accompanied by humid weather. The goal of a runner during these conditions is to push yourself, but to not worry so much about your finishing time, because it is difficult to run a fast time. The Cardinals that participated laced up their racing shoes and headed down the hill to the starting line of the 8:00 a.m. race. The 216 runners listened to the final instructions while standing in the mud and water and staring down the 400 meters of the straightaway. Off to a fast start was Leah Varsico ’26 in 21:47 and Charlotte Johnston ’26 22:00, pacing each other off of the crowd of runners and working their way through them patiently over the 3 mile race to finish in 60th and 70th respectively. Mariella Congeni ’23 in 23:30 for 116th, and Olivia Boyd ’22 in 23:47 for 126th also worked together over the length of the course while slipping and sliding their way down some of the hills and making their way towards the finish line while trying to pass as many runners as they could along the way. Katherine Benton ’24 in 24:45 in 152nd completed the team's necessary five runners to be able to score in the team standings.
The 9:00 a.m. junior varsity 3 mile race and its 88 total runners offered a chance for some runners to have their first attempt at this distance during a race environment. After two prior races with some 450 combined runners tearing the course up, the surfaces that were somewhat decent earlier were now a thick muck of mud, making it even harder for any participant to accomplish a better time from the week before. The following runners did their best and earned their stripes for the battle they went through during the 3 miles of running.
Chiara Bazan ’25 for 33rd in 25:38
Eliza Capella ’24 for 36th in 25:50
Colette Shannon ’25 for 66th in 27:29
Annabel Richards ’25 for 77th in 28.23
The Cardinals return to Highland Road Park this weekend for the Catholic High Invitational. Good luck, Cardinals!

Volleyball Plays Well in Tournament Action
It was quite a busy week for the ASH JV volleyball team. On Tuesday, they travelled to Louise McGehee for a match against the Hawks. The first game went very well, with the Cardinals winning 25-8. The Hawks got into the match in the second set and it was a back and forth game with the Cardinals finally prevailing 25-22. Kate Farris ’24 and Claire Moriarty ’25 each had five aces in the match. Lily Stone ’24 had eight assists and three aces of her own. Natalia Mehaffie ’25 and Bria Egana ’25 both played well from the middle blocker position, with Natalia having four kills and Bria adding three kills and a block. Ellie Bendich ’24 was solid on defense and serve receive for the Cardinals. The next day the team traveled to River Ridge to play the John Curtis Patriots. The Cardinals got to play in the primetime slot as the Varsity played first for this match. As the Cardinals took the court, they encountered a loud crowd of football players cheering on the home team.
The Cardinals were not rattled, and they played well winning the first set, 25-19. The Cardinals played even better in the second set, winning 25-15. It was an exciting match in front of a nice crowd. Evelyn Monstead ’25 and Taylor Robert ’25 both played solid defense. Lily Stone ’24 came ready to play as she tallied five aces and two kills. Bria Egana ’25 had two blocks and three kills. Ellie Bendich ’24 and Kate Farris ’24 each added four kills to the mix. On Friday, the team was on the road once again, this time to Country Day School for a small JV tournament. They played Cabrini in the first match on Friday. Cabrini came to play, and the Cardinals had to work hard to win the match 25-17 and 25-16.
Next up for the Cardinals was the host school, Country Day. The Cardinals played well and won the first set 25-22. Country Day came out strong in the second set and won, 25-9. In an exciting third and deciding set, the Cardinals fell behind 11-7 but rallied to win 15-13. Kate Farris ’24 rang up three crucial aces at the end of the match. The whole team made big plays during the match. On Saturday, the Cardinals played Fountainbleau first and lost in a very close match, losing the third set 15-13.
The final match was against St. Scholastica. The first set was a very tense affair going back and forth with numerous tie scores. The Cardinals finally pulled it out 28-26. Callie Parenton ’25, Charlotte Bush ’25, Evelyn Monstead ’25, Taylor Robert ’25 and Claire Moriarty ’25 were all major contributors in this game. In the second set, Lily Stone ’24 went on a hot serving streak of eight straight points and the Cardinals pulled away to a 25-9 win with some strong hitting from Mary Elise Meyer ’24, Kate Farris ’24 and Ellie Bendich ’24. Bria Egana ’25 added two stuff blocks and two kills.
The varsity Cardinal volleyball team had another great week on the court. They faced some adversity early in the week with a loss to McGehee. However, with some focus and perseverance, they were able to battle out the end of the week and weekend, bringing their weekly record to 3-2. The offense was led by setters Marian Graffagnini ’22 and Brooke Habetz ’23 totaling this week’s season games with 68 assists. Attacking at the net were hitters Gigi Gibbens ’24 (24 kills), Cami Davis ’23 (22 kills), and MC Mazzanti ’23 (11 kills), amongst others totaling 72 kills. Leading the defense on serve receive and digs were Catherine Bonura ’22 (43 digs), Katherine Hale ’23 (12 digs), Kate Ready ’23 (18 digs), and Lucy Vacius ’22 (12 digs). The team totaled last week with 10 aces, but a highlight of the tournament weekend was a game high of 23 aces against Karr. The teams are looking forward to this week in volleyball as they dive into the peak of the season. Go Cardinals!
