Cross Country Continues to Improve Times
Members of the varsity and JV cross country team enjoyed the cool weather and flat course on Saturday at the Metairie Park Country Day Classic in City Park. Sporting their pink racing singlets honoring October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the team received numerous compliments for their annual observation of it. The team’s goal was to go out hard in the beginning and push the pace. The members of the two varsity squads that ran in the earlier 3 mile races found that the plan worked out well as all seven runners in the first race either set a season best or a new personal record time. With only a total of 44 participants racing with them, it forced many to run the majority of the race by themselves as the gaps between runners spread out over the course. The Cardinals were patient and methodically passed runners as the race developed. This strategy enabled the team to capture the championship title. The race included 2 runners that were racing in their very first varsity 3 mile race, Vivian Real ’26 in 21:14 and Charlotte Johnston ’26 in 21:45. They stepped in like seasoned veterans to finish in 3rd place and 5th place for the team respectively. They followed the lead of their classmate, Leah Varisco ’26 in 20:09, 5th place overall, making a clear statement that they are here to help their team in any way possible.
In the second varsity race of the day, Katherine Benton ’24 ran to a new personal record in 22:43 in 5th place.

In the JV 2 mile race, the six freshmen Sacred Heart runners were looking to run hard during their turn to fight for a potential spot on the varsity team, and all of them ran extremely hard races, putting up some fast times while doing so.
Maria English ’24 led all runners and finished 1st place in a new personal record of 14:25 and was closely followed by her teammate Eliza Capella ’24 in 4th place in 14:49, also setting a personal record. Mia Dreiling ’24 dropped her personal record down to 15:25, while Virginia Gardes ’24 and Ava Arch ’24 pushed each other stride for stride to set new records and ran times of 15:56 & 15:57. Adelaide Doss ’24 in 16:50 pushed hard the first mile and fought through a breathing problem for the last mile, proving that she can continue and finish the race even when her body is telling her differently.
The Cross Country teams will be off this coming weekend and will return to action on Saturday, October 17 in Hammond at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Volleyball Goes Undefeated for the Week
Last Tuesday, the JV and varsity volleyball teams went on the road to St. Martin’s Episcopal School. The JV Cardinals defeated the Saints 25-13, 25-9. Kate Farris ’24 had a nice serving run with five aces in the first set, and Ellie Bendich ’24 added five kills. In the second set, Lucy Vaicius ’23, Brooke Habetz ’23, and Paige Ready ’23 continued their serving streaks collecting several aces and numerous serve receive disruptions with Isabelle Moore ’23 calling serving zones from the bench. Allie Langhetée ’23 and Gigi Gibbens ’24 added some nice kills to the mix as well.
After a sluggish start, the varsity lit up the court and burned through the Saints in three straight games winning 25-19, 25-12, 25-16. May Manning ’21 chipped in 15 kills and MC Mazzanti ’23 added eight kills. Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21 collected 15 assists and Marian Graffagnini ’22 eight assists. Bailey Axelrad ’21 and Cat Bonura ’22 both finished with nine digs. It was another strong overall performance for the Cardinals.
On Thursday, the Cardinals traveled a few blocks on St. Charles Ave. to meet up with the De La Salle Cavaliers. Coach Washburn lost the coin toss for the 9th consecutive time this season, but oddly enough De La Salle opted to receive serve instead of serving first. Brooke Habetz ’23 made them regret that decision as she opened the match with seven straight points. The Cardinals never looked back as they went on to a 25-8 victory in the first set. The Cavaliers seemed shaken by the constant serving pressure from Sacred Heart, and the result was a 25-4 win in the second set for the Cardinals. Mary Elise Meyer ’24, Kate Farrris ’24, Lily Stone ’24, and Gigi Gibbens ’24 all had some big swings during the match. Paige Ready ’23 and Brooke Habetz ’23 delivered some sweet sets, and the passing from Ellie Bendich ’24, Allie Langhetée ’24, and Lucy Vaicius ’23 was very good. The varsity would follow suit, dominating De La Salle 25-14, 25-13, 25-9. MC Mazzanti ’23 had 12 kills ,and May Manning ’21 had nine kills for the team. Cat Bonura ’22 had 12 digs, and Bailey Axelrad ’21 had 11 digs. Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21 and Marian Graffagnini ’22 both recorded 15 assists. It was a balanced team effort for the victory.
