Cross Country
On Halloween morning, the cross country varsity team traveled to Hammond for the annual St. Thomas Aquinas Invitational. The runners had a great week of practice and were ready to try to scare their fellow Class 3-A competition with some fast times. They did not disappoint as six of the seven runners ran either a new personal record or a season best time. Olivia McGoey ’21 (2nd - 18:34 PR) pushed the lead three runners through the first mile in 6:04 and mile two in 12:21 and fought hard to the finish with the 4-A State Champion, coming up just short. Feeding off of Olivia's quick pace, the others also pushed hard to see how fast they could run. Leah Varisco ’26 (9th - 20:00 PR) ran a very strategic race and helped her teammates by encouraging them to also go just outside their comfort zones, which in turn, helped them reach new season best times. Caroline Nusloch ’21 (14th - 20:44 SB), CC Johnson ’23 (15th - 20:46 SB), and Vivian Real ’26 (18th - 20:51 PR) worked together as they passed numerous runners to finish out the Top 5 scoring runners. Charlotte Johnston ’26 (22nd - 21:34) and Mariella Congeni ’23 (24th - 21:49 SB) moved past several runners over the last mile to position themselves in front of the other teams scoring runners, which in turn, pushed those teams further back in the overall standings. The competition was tough with five of the six teams competing being either State Champions or State Runner Up teams from the previous season among four different classifications. The Cardinals finished 2nd place overall and hope to catapult even closer to the top of our division's standings. The team will return to Hammond today for the Northshore Metro Championship for their penultimate race of the 2020 season and one final race for those runners that wish to race for their best effort of their season.
The Junior Varsity 3 mile race combined the girls and boys, which allowed for our five runners to have some boys in front to push them along the course. Sacred Heart captured the 1st place title with a perfect score of 15 points, as the team went 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th overall in the individual standings. These four runners ran stride for stride and worked together for the first 2.75 miles of the 3 mile race. With the finish line in sight, the five runners made their final push to secure their individual spot and help their team scoring. Here are their times and finish places:
1st - 22:58 - Katherine Benton ’24
2nd - 23:15 - Eliza Capella ’24 - Personal Record
3rd - 23:22 - Katie Kleehammer ’22
4th - 23:25 - Audrey Lemann ’21
5th - 23:52 - McLaine Schlosser ’26 - Personal Record
