On Friday, November 20th, our swim team competed in the State Championship Meet held in Shreveport. Sacred Heart accomplished some great achievements, and it was a very successful meet. Out of ten swimmers entered into the meet, seven Cardinals made their fastest times of the year.

They scored six more points than Caddo Magnet to take the third place title in a very close finish.

Cross Country Takes Home Two State Runner-Up Titles
On Tuesday, November 17, the Sacred Heart cross country team competed in the State Championship Meet held on the campus of Northwestern State University. The 2020 team headed into the State Meet, each one with a different goal. One was trying to repeat as Individual State Champion, another was one year removed from surgery and trying to work her way back into the Top 7, and another wanting to finish out her career on top with a team title. Other goals were overcoming shin splints and injuries, and three new members all extremely nervous running in their first State Championship Race. These girls were representing all of the teammates back home and from years past, trying to do their best of continuing the winning tradition of the program.
This year's team of runners at the state meet were Olivia McGoey '21, Caroline Nusloch '21, Olivia Boyd '22, CC Johnson '23, Charlotte Johnston '26, Vivian Real '26 and Leah Varisco '26. Going into the meet ranked third, the Cardinals found out quickly that two other teams had their sights on capturing the title as well.
These seven ladies came through the first half mile right on their pace, but found themselves back in the crowd and knew it was going to be a total team effort this year if they had any hopes of bringing home either the 1st or 2nd place trophy. At this point in the race, Sacred Heart was in 3rd place as a team, and that position is where they stayed for the next two miles of the three mile race. Even as Olivia McGoey '21 moved herself into 2nd place, the leader was holding her off by roughly 10 seconds throughout the 2½ miles covered so far. Leah Varisco '26 moved up from 36th at the ½ mile to 9th at the 1 mile, and 6th at the 2 mile. Caroline Nusloch '21, was 40th at the ½ mile to 27th at the 1 mile, and 20th at 2 miles. CC Johnson '23, Charlotte Johnston '26 and Vivian Real '26 ran together with Caroline Nusloch and were 41st, 42nd and 43rd at the ½ mile marker, then moved up to 30th, 31st and 35th at the 1 mile, and up again over the next mile to 23rd, 24th and 31st when they crossed at 2 miles. Olivia Boyd '22, pushed herself to her limits, testing her physical condition as well as her mental toughness and came through the ½ mile in around 20th spot and then the 1 mile in 33rd, right there with the others. She held her spot at 36th and finished in that place giving everything she had on this day. The rest of the team continued passing runners from the current 2nd place team and some from the 1st place team. The remaining six runners fought hard over the last 600 meters, slowly picking off runners from St. Louis Catholic. The Cardinals needed to pass everyone that they could before making it onto the track with just 300 meters to go in the race. The course is designed to be flat for the first 2½ miles and then three hills appear just before the final kick. As a team, the Sacred Heart runners were able to pass the necessary runners to sneak pass them for a potential 2nd place finish. Olivia McGoey '21 captured the State Runner-Up title in an impressive 19:11 to finish off her career. Leah Varisco '26 had an impressive last ½ mile and finished in 5th place in a new personal record of 19:42, securing her first Top 10 All-State finish as a 7th grader. Caroline Nusloch '21, made a huge move and caught six more runners over the last mile, two of which she passed on the track for valuable points to finish 14th in 20:52. CC Johnson '23 (21st - 21:20) and Charlotte Johnston '26 (22nd - 21:25) worked together over the last mile passing three runners each, but more importantly, one from St. Louis, pushing their team further back in points. CC ran through pain the entire race but knew how important she was for the team and did a wonderful job finishing 4th for us. Charlotte showed just how tough she really is finishing just 15 seconds off her personal record and 5th for the team when they needed her the most. Vivian Real '26 -21:54 in 29th did an amazing job in her first State Championship to prove that she was worthy of her spot on the starting line. She also passed four more runners over the last mile.
As the race was complete and the scores were being tallied, the girls waited nervously to hear the announcer make the call. Sacred Heart would be crowned State Runner-Up, right behind E.D. White who would take first place.
The excitement that the girls had for coming in as State Runner Up in Class 3-A proves that this team of hard working student athletes take pride in their program and the school they represent. Congratulations Cardinals on a job well done!
