Volleyball is Headed to the Cajundome
Sacred Heart had a big week as they began their post season playoff run. The Cardinals had a Bi-Distrcit Playoff match against Franklin on Monday and won in three straight sets. The offense was led by setters Marian Graffagnini ‘22 and Brooke Habetz ‘23 totaling the playoff match with 22 assists. Attacking at the net were hitters Gigi Gibbens ‘24 (5 kills), MC Mazzanti ‘23 (10 kills), Isabelle Moore ‘23 (4 kills), and Marian Graffagnini ‘22 (6 kills). Leading the defense on serve receive and digs were Catherine Bonura ‘22, Katherine Hale ‘23, Kate Ready ‘22, Lucy Vacius ‘23, and Isabella Erazo ‘22. The Cardinals were impressive behind the service line with a total of 20 aces, 14 of those from Catherine Bonura ‘22 and four more from Brooke Habetz ‘23.
Following the Bi-District win, the Cardinals met the #9 seed, Parkview Baptist in the Regional Playoff match. The Cardinals had an impressive four set win over the Eagles to advance to the State Tournament in Lafayette. Remaining an essential part of the offense were setters Marian Graffagnini ‘22 (15 assists) and Brooke Habetz ‘23 (25 assists). The Cardinal hitting and blocking set the team apart against Parkview. The front row managed 49 total kills and 15 blocks with big performances from Cami Davis ‘23 (15 kills and 5 blocks), MC Mazzanti ‘23 (15 kills), and Marian Graffagnini ‘22 (9 kills). Other kills and blocks came from Isabelle Moore ‘23 and Gigi Gibbens ‘24. The defense let very few balls hit the ground with great serve receive and digs from Catherine Bonura ‘22 (22 digs), Katherine Hale ‘23 (8 digs), Brooke Habetz ‘23 (13 digs), and Marian Graffagnini ‘23 (13 digs).
The Cardinals will travel to the Cajundome this Thursday to play the #1 seed, Ascension Episcopal in the Quarterfinals. Good luck, Cardinals!
Cross Country Earns North Shore Metro Title
The Cardinals came into the North Shore Metro Championship meet after running their best total team effort the week before and also had a fantastic week of practice. These runners knew what was on the line and took advantage of their training once again and 9 of the 11 had either a season best or personal record. That can be attributed to the pack running they did during the beginning of the race which helped them stay in close contact with each other. Sacred Heart competed against six other teams, two of which are in a higher division and the Cardinals prevailed over all of them and captured the Metro Championship with a low score of 39 points. These are the individual and team results:
19:45 - 3rd - Leah Varisco ’26 SB
20:34 - 6th - Charlotte Johnston ’26 - PR
20:36 - 7th - Vivian Real ’26 - PR
20:53 - 9th - Colette English ’27 - PR
21:27 - 19th - Katherine Benton ’24 - PR
21:33 - 20th - Lily Varisco ’27 - PR
21:47 - 22nd - Mariella Congeni ’23 - SB
22:13 - 25th - CC Johnson ’23 - SB
22:42 - 30th - Abby Truxillo ’26
23:37 - 38th - Chiara Bazan ’25
The Cardinals next meet is the 3A State Championship on Tuesday, November 16th in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Finish strong, ladies!
