Basketball
The varsity and JV basketball teams both had a busy week last week. After the varsity team’s stellar victory against Morris Jeff on Monday, they returned to the court to face Kenner Discovery and Newman.
The JV squad was up first against the Kenner Discovery Swamp Owls. While falling behind 4-2 in the first quarter, the team tied it up at 6 by halftime. Led by an offensive push in the third, however, the Cardinals proved unstoppable for the Owls, claiming a 16-10 victory. The Cardinals were led by Natalia Mehaffie ’25, who contributed four, and Audrey Rose Lavie ’25 whose work as the point guard helped to spark the Cardinals’ offensive push.
Varsity was up next with an equally exciting contest. While the Cardinals went ahead early, the Swamp Owls managed to keep a small lead throughout the course of the game, up three at half and four at the end of the third. Despite a last second chance to tie the game, the Cardinals ended up falling by three. They are certainly looking forward to a rematch with Kenner Discovery in February. Leah Varisco ’26 led the Cardinals in scoring with 13.
Friday marked one of the biggest rivalry games for the Cardinals, facing Newman in the Rosary Gym. The JV squad kept their game close, holding Newman to a three-point lead at halftime. Despite only a four-point deficit toward the end of the fourth quarter, the Cardinals were unable to spark a quick comeback. Mehaffie ’25 led the JV squad again in scoring with 5, and Taylor Robert ’25 played an incredible game, preventing Newman from growing their lead any more.
Faced with the Newman varsity, the Cardinals played one of their toughest contests of the season. While the Greenies proved victorious, the final score at the buzzer did not reflect how close the game truly was, with the Cardinals effectively stopping Newman’s powerful post offense, forcing them to shoot from the outside. Lillian Balart ’22 led the Cardinals in scoring with six. Cami Davis ’23 and Izabella Erazo ’22 both had incredible defensive games, securing key rebounds and defending the paint.
The basketball Cardinals’ next contest is another rivalry game at Pope John Paul II in Slidell on Friday.

Middle School Soccer
Both 7th and 8th grade soccer teams used games to improve last week. The teams passed and played position soccer very well. The White team played a 9v9 game and narrowly lost to Trinity 2-1, with Libby Stassi ’26 scoring the White team's goal. The Red team lost to Newman 3-2, with Edie Yockey ’26 scoring both goals and Lucy Mason ’26 playing 'lights out' defense on Newman's best offensive player.
This week the White team chose to play an 11v11 game (which meant they only had one substitute) on the large Tad Gormely field. The team again played great team soccer working to pass the ball and using their off feet to kick the ball as needed. The first half ended with the Cardinals down 1-0. Sacred Heart tired in the second half and Newman repeatedly kicked long balls to their one dominant player who played forward and scored four of their five goals. The backline of Sofia Sercovich ’26, Kate Cummings ’26, Olivia Keller ’26, and Caitlin Brennan ’26 played very well, despite the score and playing the entire game.
For the Red team, it was a different story against a Country Day team that had had only three practices with their coach. The girls jumped out to a 5-0 lead sparked by two goals by Abby Truxillo ’26 and goals by Colette English ’27, Caroline Kenter ’27, and Zoe Sofranko ’26. The team scored two more goals in the first half despite the team being required to take all touches with their off foot. A combination of beautiful off-foot passing and dribbling led to off-foot goals by Edie Yockey ’26 and Lily Varisco ’27. In the 2nd half, goalie Ellie Habetz ’26 moved to forward and the girls were instructed that only Ellie could score. Sure enough, late in the second half, Ellie scored with a beautiful (off-footed) goal to finish the scoring, and the bench and team erupted in celebration.
