Soccer Looks to Improve with Tough Competition
The Sacred Heart varsity soccer team had two very difficult games this past week. After finally having a full roster back but with limited training, the Cardinals traveled to Vandebilt Catholic for a Thursday match. For the first twenty minutes of the game, Sacred Heart struggled to create chances on goal. Because of some amazing saves by keeper Cat Bonura ’22, the Cardinals were only down 1-0 at the half. With some halftime adjustments, they came out strong playing some of their best soccer yet and created several scoring opportunities but unfortunately, none of them resulted in a goal. After giving up a goal on a corner kick, the game started to slip away. Daisy Mooney ’23 stepped in as goalkeeper and played very well considering the difficult circumstances, but with a few other minor injuries the Cardinals fell 5-0 in a disappointing loss. CC Johnson ’23 gave an outstanding effort for 80 minutes of box to box work.
On Saturday, the Cardinals faced quite possibly their toughest competition of this season against Dominican. They came in with their entire varsity squad intact from last year. Sacred Heart gave their best effort, but would take a 5-0 loss to a very talented team. This season has definitely been a rough start, but the Cardinals have plenty of great games ahead. Keep up the hard work, girls!

Basketball Goes 1-1 for the Week
On Wednesday, the JV team traveled to Chapelle for their second game of the season. The Cardinals came out strong with Mallory Medo ’23 leading the way with four points in the first quarter. The Cardinals gave up eight points in the second quarter including two 3-pointers to find themselves down 12-7 at halftime. After a few adjustments, Audrey Rose Lavie ’25 and Bria Egana ’25 were able to score goals and bring the Cardinals within one point to start the fourth quarter. The Cardinals played tough defense the entire second half holding the Chipmunks scoreless in both the third and fourth quarters. Natalia Mehaffie ’25 chipped in four points in the final eight minutes to take the lead and secure the victory for the Cardinals.
On Thursday, the Varsity squad faced Newman in Rosary Gym. In preparation, the Cardinals reviewed film, went over their press break, offense, defense and game day strategy. However, with only a few practices with the entire team and many girls coming from different fall sports, the Cardinals were not prepared with Newman’s fast style of play. Newman would score most of their points off of their fast break, and Sacred Heart struggled the entire game to find ways to score. Cami Davis ’23 led the scoring effort for the Cardinals with four points. Sacred Heart would fall short to the Greenies but are already looking forward to the rematch in January.

Prep Soccer Plays with Heart
The 7/8 Red team played Country Day on Wednesday and came out on fire, scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes before the girls pivoted to working on playing with their off foot, passing, and shooting beyond the 18 yard box. Goals were scored by Mary Avery Pinkerton ’26, Vivian Real ’26, Abby Truxillo ’26, and Leah Varisco ’26.
Then, the Red team stepped up in competition and played Newman's 8th grade team on Friday. The girls played their best game of the season so far and were led by Emily Guider ’26 with exceptionally strong defensive play the entire game, Ellie Habetz ’26 with strong and consistent play in goal, and a high-quality goal by Abby Truxillo ’26. The Red team improved significantly but lost in the final minutes 2-1.
Last week, the 5/6 Red team had a fantastic showing in their game against Trinity. The Cardinals had lots of opportunities to score and never gave up despite a strong effort by the Trinity goalkeeper. Early in the second half, Charlotte Champagne ’27 put away two goals to put the Cardinals up 2-0. Trinity fought their way back to end the game at a very close 2-2 tie. Both teams will be back in action after the holidays

Prep Basketball Kicks Off With Competitions
Sacred Heart opened the 7/8 basketball season versus Newman. The game was a nail bitter with Newman winning in the last minute, 22-18. Leading the way in scoring was Leah Varisco ’26 and Eleanor Erazo-Pierson ’26. The entire team showed a lot of promise and potential with only six practices to start the season. Sophie Lo ’26 and Abby Truxillo ’26 set the tone on defense, which allowed the team to break up every set Newman tried to run. However, costly turnovers and missed easy baskets were the deciding factor in the game. The team returns to action in early January 2021.
The Sacred Heart 5/6 basketball team traveled to Trinity Episcopal for their season opener. The team was victorious, 17-8. Caroline Balart ’27 led the team in scoring with nine points. Also, having strong offensive games were Lily Varisco ’27 and Sarah Wanek ’28, with four points respectively. Forwards Elizabeth Alford ’27 and Camille Tyler ’27 had strong defensive efforts on the boards and held the opposing strongest player to only two points. Next up is Christian Brothers at the Rosary gym on December 15th. Good luck, Cardinals!
