Basketball Finishes December Games on a High Note
Before heading into exams, the basketball team took part in two JV games and two V games last week. On Monday, they faced a good Chapelle JV team. Many of the younger Cardinals improved this game and six were able to find ways to score. Down by 13 going into the fourth quarter, the Cardinals scored 8 point in the final eight minutes. They would eventually fall to Chapelle by 8 points but it was a strong performance by Sacred Heart.
Mallory Medo ’23 led the team with six points followed by
Kate Ready ’22 and
Aleyea Mogilles ’22 with four each.
On Wednesday, Sacred Heart hosted Berwick for a Varsity matchup. Berwick came in and tested the Cardinals on defense. They pushed the ball up the court and scored quickly off the fast break. However, the Cardinals caught on and made big adjustments to stop the fast break points. Berwick was the better team and would walk away with the victory but the Cardinals used the good competition to improve themselves.
Mallory Medo ’23,
Lillian Balart ’22, and
Adriana Mehaffie ’21 all pitched in with six points.
Elizabeth Brooks ’21 added four along with
Lindsey Magaw ’21 with three and
Aleyea Mogilles ’23 with two points.
Thursday, the JV team played Morris Jeff and came out with another JV victory! With a slick court surface and only six players, the girls attacked the goal and were able to score on both outside shooting and offensive rebounds.
Friday, the Cardinals faced neighborhood rival Newman. The girls were prepared with a game plan and executed it well. The Greenies came out to an early ten point lead but the Cardinals chipped away in the second quarter to head into the locker room at halftime tied with Newman. In the third quarter, we held Newman players scoreless except for one player. We went into fourth quarter down by only six points, but the Cardinals struggled to score and Newman would walk away with the win.
Lindsey Magaw ’21 and
Elizabeth Brooks ’21 led Sacred Heart with seven points each. The Cardinals played extremely aggressive defense and would walk away giving their best effort and looking forward to a rematch in February.
