Middle School Soccer
The middle school soccer program kicked off the season with games last week. On Wednesday, the 7th/8th White soccer team lost a very close game to Trinity by a score of 1-2. Our 5th/6th grade White team also played Trinity but fell short. On Monday, our 7th/8th grade Red team played Newman. The Cardinals were able to score two goals but it was not enough to defeat Newman as the Greenies were able to find goal three times. The middle school soccer teams will compete this Wednesday and will also have a double header on Saturday. Good luck girls!

JV and Varsity Basketball Each Get Wins
The 2021-22 Cardinals basketball team, ready for an exciting season ahead, tipped off their season with three games last week.
On Tuesday, the varsity squad battled Houma Christian in the Rosary Gym. While the team started strong with a three-pointer from Lillian Balart ’22, the Warriors offense proved too strong for the Cardinals to stop. Leah Varisco ’26 led Sacred Heart in scoring with 6 points and also added four steals.
The JV team began the season with a contest against Archbishop Chapelle on Wednesday. The Cardinals were dominant in the post and the strong offensive push was difficult for the Chipmunks to defend. Sacred Heart built up a 9-0 lead in the first quarter, extending it to 16-2 lead at halftime and denying the Chipmunks a single field goal in the first half. Led by Ellie Bendich ’24 and Bria Egana ’25 each with six points, the Cardinals could not be stopped and were victorious 24-9.
The varsity Cardinals crossed the Causeway for a Friday night matchup with the St. Scholastica Doves in Covington. The Doves got out to a fast start, ending the first quarter up 19-4. After making some adjustments, the Cardinals came out quick in the second quarter, holding the Doves to only three points. While the Sacred Heart defense held strong in the second half, the lead built up in the first quarter proved to be insurmountable. Cami Davis ’23 led the Cardinals in scoring with 8; Natalia Mehaffie ’25 contributed four points off the bench.
On Monday, the varsity earned its first win of the season against Morris Jeff. Sacred Heart jumped out to a 11-5 lead in the first quarter and never let up. It was a total team effort and great win for the team. Leading scorers for the Cardinals were Cami Davis ’23 (13 points), Leah Varisco ’26 and Lillian Balart ’22 (8 points each), Izabella Erazo ’22 (7 points), and Genevieve Doucet ’22 (6 points).
The squad is looking forward to their games this week in the Rosary Gym against Kenner Discovery on Wednesday and Newman on Friday. Come out and support your Cardinals!

The team struggled offensively all game against a much taller team, but the game was competitive throughout and the Cardinals fell by only six points. Lily Varisco ‘27 led the team with six points. Evy Lauscha ’26 and Gray Gibbs ’26 played tough defense on the taller Haynes girls and Caroline Balart ’27, Caroline Kenter ’27, and Lily Varisco ‘27 took turns running the point on offense.
The team played rival Isidore Newman at Newman to end the first week of the regular season. Sacred Heart played inspired basketball controlling both ends of the court from the opening tip, winning the game, 23-11. Caroline Balart ’27 again led the team with nine points and Elizabeth Alford ’27 had a breakout game offensively scoring eight points. The entire team played smothering defense holding Newman scoreless in the 1st and 3rd quarters.
