The Cardinal Nation Wants to Hear from You!
Despite the necessary limits on attendance at our Athletic events, the Sacred Heart Athletic Department and Booster Club want the ASH Cardinal Nation to be engaged and informed about all things Athletics.
To that end, the Booster Club is producing a Q&A format video, and we want your input! In the video that will be shared with all parents, we'll showcase what's happening in Cardinal Athletics, host a meet and greet with Athletic Director Sue Bower, and answer any questions you have about Athletics and the ASH Athletics Booster Club!
Please send any questions you have about ASH Athletics or the Booster Club to [email protected] by Monday, February 8. Go Cardinals!!

Soccer
Last Monday, Sacred Heart soccer entered its last week of the regular season by traveling to Baton Rouge for a match against #7 ranked Baton Rouge-Episcopal. Coming off a tough loss on Saturday, the Cardinals were ready to get back on the pitch and back in the win column. From the opening whistle, we dictated the pace and play of the game, possessing the ball with speed and precision, breaking down their defense, and creating multiple chances on their goal. Unfortunately, we were unable to make any of those chances count in the first half, and we reached halftime scoreless. In the second half we completely took over the game when Martha Hammet ’23 crossed a beautifully weighted ball from a pass from Olivia McGoey ’21, it was headed home by striker Carolina Mehaffie ’24. The Cardinals continued pressure and finished the game off by adding a late goal by Sinclair Nolan ’23. With yet another total team performance, the Cardinals took home a very convincing 2-0 win over a talented Episcopal team.
The final regular season match was at home against Academy of Our Lady and our senior night celebration. The game started off with a wonderful moment that allowed Senior Captain, Caroline Evans ’21, recently out with a season injury, to start the opening kick-off, and then sub out. It was a touching moment, and we send a huge thank you to AOL for allowing us to celebrate Caroline’s outstanding career. The Cardinals were dominant from start to finish, once again controlling and dominating possession as well as dictating the pace of the game. The Cardinals came out on top 7-0 with two goals each by Gabby Thibodaux ’21 and Cat Bonura ’22, and goals by Olivia McGoey ’21, Sinclair Nolan ’23 and Anna Watson ’23. A great win by Sacred Heart that was followed by the post game senior night recognition for our six seniors: # 1 Caroline Evans ’21, # 3 Gabby Thibodaux ’21, #4 Katie Paige Gardes ’21, #7 Olivia McGoey ’21, and team managers Isabel Evans and Grace Moriarty. Congratulations to our outstanding seniors and a special thanks to everyone involved in making this a special evening for our girls.
The team awaits its seeding in the LHSAA tournament which begins this week.

Basketball
Before their game on Tuesday, the varsity basketball team honored ten seniors, whom we will very much miss next year. Each senior was presented pre-game and was given a framed photo, flowers, and a memento of their time in the basketball program.
Against McGehee, the Cardinals kept it very close in the first half, out-rebounding the Hawks and not allowing any easy shots on fast breaks. Unfortunately, the Hawks built up a bit of a lead in the third quarter, despite outscoring them in the fourth, the Cardinals were unable to take back the lead. May Manning ’21 led the team in scoring with eight, Lillian Balart ’22 contributed six off the bench, and Leah Goody ’21 contributed her season’s best four. Adriana Mehaffie ’21 pulled down eleven rebounds, while Lindsey Magaw ’21 got ten, including eight crucial defensive rebounds. Magaw and Mehaffie each tied with five blocks. Elizabeth Brooks ’21 was a leader on defense, and Elise Vickery ’21 and Rolland Grady ’21 helped to close out the game. The team is thankful for all of the leadership, enthusiasm, and positivity that the seniors have brought to the team, and we will miss them greatly next year.

On Thursday, the Cardinals traveled over to State St. to take on Ursuline, the number four team in the state. The Cardinals played strong defense against the Lions, holding them to one of their lower offensive outputs for the season, but were unable to overcome the lead built up in the first half. Despite the result, the Cardinals’ ball movement improved over the course of the game, and they began to drive to the basket more and more, putting some strain on the Ursuline defense. Adriana Mehaffie ’21 pulled down 15 rebounds, and Elizabeth Brooks ’21 and Lillian Balart ’21 each knocked down two free throws.
The Cardinals are looking forward to a light week this week, full of practice with only JV and Varsity games at De La Salle this afternoon.

Prep Soccer- 7th/8th Red-NOAL Champions!
In the NOAL semifinal win, Edie Yockey ’26 came off the bench to stake the Red Team to a 1-0 lead until late in the first half when Newman's 7th-grade team equalized. Then, in the later stages of the second half, Mary Avery Pinkerton ’26 scored, and the defense held off Newman to preserve the 2-1 win.
In the finals, Newman's 8th grade team went up 2-0 in the second half. Then Edie Yockey ’26 again got the Red Team on the board with a goal and Mary Avery Pinkerton ’26 again scored a goal. This goal sent the game into two 10-minute overtime periods. In the first overtime period, the Red Team had the favorable wind but could not quite put the ball in the net. This set up the dramatic finish when Eleanor Erazo-Pierson ’26 took a corner kick against the wind and scored. The Red Team's team defense held off Newman, and the Red Team was on the attack when the final whistle sounded, giving them a 3-2 victory and the 7th/8th Girls Soccer NOAL Championship!

Prep Basketball-5th/6th NOAL Champions!
The 5th/6th grade team played Trinity for the NOAL Championship last Friday. The girls had played Trinity in the first regular season game winning by a slim margin so they knew it would be a tough game.
|
Lily Varisco ’27 got the offense rolling early with seven first half points. Rosie Varisco ’28 and Caroline Balart ’27 ran the offense effectively and put great defense pressure on the Trinity team that forced Trinity to struggle offensively. Elizabeth Alford ’27 and Sarah Wanek ’28 dominated on the offensive and defensive boards in the first half. The Cardinals finished the first half up 9-7. In the 2nd half, Caroline Balart ’27, took over the game offensively scoring eight, finishing the game with a team leading ten points, followed by Lily Varisco ’27 with 7 points and Rosie Varisco ’28 with 4 points. Elizabeth Alford ’27 scored two critical buckets in the 4th quarter, and Colette English ’27 came off the bench to score 2 points when Trinity was making a charge late in the game. Sacred Heart came away with a 27-20 victory and the 2020-21 NOAL Championship!
The 7th/8th grade team hosted the 8th graders from Dominican last Tuesday to finish the regular season. There was an intimidation factor from our 7th grade girls when they arrived to face a tall team, but Coach Ben reassured the girls that games are won by strong defense, and that they were ready! Leah Varsico ’26 carried the offensive load scoring all nine first half points for the Cardinals. Sophie Lo ’26, Evy Lauscha ’26, Eleanor Erazo-Pierson ’26, Lili Rosenstein ’26, and Grey Gibbs ’26 played incredible defense to keep the team in the game in the first half. At halftime, the team was only down 3 points, with 9-12. In the 2nd second half, Dominican’s height proved to be the difference, scoring most of their points from inside the paint. The final score was Dominican 23, Sacred Heart 14. The NOAL championship kicks off today, with the Cardinals hosting McGehee in the Rosary Gym at 4 p.m.
