Soccer
As the 10th seed in the LHSAA Division IV playoffs, we drew the 23rd seed Evangel Christian, and when that Friday night came around, we were ready. It was a cold and damp evening, one widely considered to be perfect soccer weather, and Sacred Heart came out playing strong and fast. Our opponent dropped defensively in order to absorb our attack and limit our chances on goal. As we held possession for the majority of the first half, the 2-0 halftime score was less about our opponent limiting our chances but more about us missing those chances. We created many opportunities on goal but hit the crossbar three times as well as missing wide several times. But eighteen minutes in, we finally hit home with a beautiful shot from outside the box by Martha Hammet ’23. Then about five minutes later, Gabby Thibodaux ’21 made it 2-0 from a cross into the box that ricocheted off the defender.
In the first half, the Cardinals played strong possession soccer helped by the dominant play of our back defensive line. In the second half, we just didn’t execute as well as we did in the first half. The weaker execution turned out not to be an issue because we soon got our third goal, a great finish off a left foot shot by Sinclair Nolan ’23 from an overlap cross from Paige Ready ’23. Then as the match was winding down, Evangel ended up getting a late goal, thus ending our first round playoff match in a 3-1 victory. Now while the score line didn’t reflect how much we dominated the game, this is the playoffs. In the words of Raiders owner Al Davis, “Just win, Baby.” And we won.
This evening, the Cardinals go back to Baton Rouge to play the 7th seeded Episcopal in the Round of 16. This will be a challenging game, as while the Cardinals defeated Episcopal 2-0 earlier in the season, the Knights are a talented team and will be looking for revenge as well as a playoff quarter-final berth.

Basketball
On Tuesday, both the JV and varsity basketball teams headed just down St. Charles for afternoon contests with De La Salle. The JV squad had one of their best games of the season. Despite a slow start, the Cardinals made quick work of breaking the Cavaliers’ press. While down a bit at the half, the Cardinals came roaring back, outscoring De La Salle 15-8 in the second half. Despite the second half surge, the Cardinals were not able to overcome the first half deficit and fell by just six points. Mallory Medo ’23 ran the point and led the squad on defense. Taylor Robert ’25 led all Cardinal scorers with ten points, and Bria Egana ’25 contributed seven and shot well from the free throw line. Egana and Natalia Mehaffie ’25 controlled the paint and pulled down a number of key offensive and defensive rebounds.
|
In the second game of the double-header, the varsity squad took a few minutes to slow down the tempo of the game and settle into their offensive rhythm. As they began to find the holes in De La Salle’s press, the Cardinals began to find an offensive rhythm. While the Cardinals outscored the Cavaliers 11-4 in the fourth, including three pointers from Lindsey Magaw ’21 and Elizabeth Brooks ’21, the deficit remained too big for Sacred Heart to overcome. Lindsey Magaw led the Cardinals in scoring with 13 and was just one rebound shy of a double-double. Elizabeth Brooks contributed six, shooting 75% from the free throw line. Leah Goody ’21 played nearly the entire game and was an energetic, tough presence on defense.
The Cardinals are looking forward to the final week of the regular season with three JV and three Varsity games to close out the season.

Indoor Track
The Last Chance Indoor Meet Qualifier held this past Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse on the campus of L.S.U. was the only opportunity of the season for our available Sacred Heart athletes to try and earn a spot in the State Championship Meet in two weeks on Saturday, February 20. Mykhala Coleman ’21 and Leah Varisco ’26 took advantage of this opportunity and earned their spot in their respective events.

Mykhala entered the Shot Put arena ranked as one of the top returners from last year, combined with her training and commitment to her craft since the beginning of the school year. The throwers in the competition were each given four throws during their flight to try and achieve their best distance. Mykhala’s first attempt traveled 35’ 7.5,” her second attempt 35’ 3,” and her third was 35’ 11,” which placed her in 6th overall with one final attempt remaining.
After a quick few words of encouragement and some pointers on her release to be quicker and higher, she stepped into the throwing circle and took her position at the back of the ring, some 7 ½ feet from her release point at the toe board. As I was snapping photos of her attempt, the coaches near me let out a “WOW” as the 8.8 lb shot put was released from her hand and flew higher than the other 3 attempts and with a greater velocity. Landing obviously much further that the prior throws, we waited anxiously for the officials to call out the final distance. 40’ 2.75,” a New Personal & School Record which was good enough to capture 3rd place overall out of 48 throwers. With that throw, Mykhala moved into the 20th Best Throw in the NATION for High Schoolers this season. What a way to finish and have this awesome momentum going into the next 2 weeks of training for the State Meet.

Next up was Leah Varisco ’26 in the 3200 Meter Run, 16 laps laps around with 21 total runners in her heat trying to also run their best and qualify for the State Meet. After an outstanding Cross Country season that ended with her 5th place finish at the championship, in which she earned All-State and Composite All-Metro Honors back in November, Leah has taken some time to compete in her other sports of soccer and basketball. With the chance to run in her first Indoor Meet competition, we both agreed that she would use this as an opportunity to gain experience in this new venue and to not worry so much about her potential time. Upon arrival at the complex, she was ready to put forth her best effort and test her physical conditioning.
When she began passing runners, some of them 6 years older than her, during the course of the 16 laps, her confidence grew: 3:03 for the ½ mile and 6:12 (3:09) at the 1 mile marker, and she was in 15 out of 21 runners. For the remaining 6 laps of the race, Leah steadily increased her speed while passing some other runners in front of her, running her 3rd 800 meters in 3:20. She opened her stride and pumped her arms over the last 400 meters and passed 2 more runners before crossing the finish line, running her last 800 in 3:02, her fastest of the race. 12:34 for 3200 meters and 9th place overall and earned herself a spot to compete at the State Championships on Saturday, February 20. Wow!!!

Prep Soccer- 5th/6th White-NOAL Champions!
On Tuesday, the both 5/6th teams entered the NOAL League playoffs without their coach, Molly Cowley. So Ned Benjamin, the 7th/8th Soccer Head Coach, stepped in to coach the team.
In the first game, the Red team faced a tough, #1 seeded Trinity. Trinity was quick to score, but the Cardinals never gave up and came back to score two goals in the second half. Charlotte Champagne ’27 and Caroline Kenter ’27 led the offensive charge in the second half with help from Emmy Woodward ’28. The Cardinals ended up losing the match, but walked away proud of their efforts and determination.
Next up was the #2 seeded White team against #3 seeded Newman. Center midfielder Colette English ’27 scored two unassisted goals, one in each half, as she dribbled through the Newman players and slotted the ball into the net. The Cardinals defense was tough and was able to keep Newman out of their half, clenching the win at 2-0.
On Thursday, the White team returned for the championship game against #1 seeded Trinity. Sarah Wanek ’28 scored two impressive goals, one 2 minutes into the game, and one with 2 minutes left in the game to give the White Team the 5th/6th NOAL Championship with a 2-1 win! Sarah's first goal came off of a corner kick, and her second goal came via her off foot on a great assist from Colette English ’27 who had dribbled through the Trinity defense and saw Sarah with space in front of the goal.
The reason Colette could come up field from her midfield position in both games was the play of the other midfielders and the defense. Lily Varisco ’27 would control the midfield with her speed and stamina with support from forward Rosie Varisco ’28, while wing midfielders Therese Hymel ’28 and Skyler Jones ’28 fought tenaciously on the midfield wings constantly slowing or stopping an attack. The few times when an opponent did break through, the back line of Molly McConville ’28, Elise Scafidel ’28, Molly Screen ’28, and Cate Turner ’28 turned back many attempts or Allie Gernard ’28 made a quality save. This championship was truly a team win!
Congratulations to all of the Prep soccer players on a fantastic season!

Prep Basketball-7th/8th Declared NOAL Champions!
The 7th/8th basketball entered the final week of the season with one goal in mind, winning the NOAL Championship. The team played McGehee on Tuesday in the semi-finals as several schools were forced to drop out of the playoffs due to COVID. In the opening quarter, the team came out firing on all cylinders, outscoring McGehee 11-0. Leading the way for the Cardinals was Lily Rosenstein ’26 with 5 points, Leah Varisco ’26 with 4 points, and Sally Irwin ’26 with 2 points. The coaches had been stressing all season the importance of strong defense, and it was evident by holding McGehee scoreless in the 1st quarter.
The 2nd quarter was highlighted by Jane Farnsworth ’27 who scored a season high 4 points with two nice shots in the paint. Every player played valuable minutes in the 2nd half, with Audrey Finch ’26 and Sophie Lo ’26 each scoring a bucket to complete the scoring for the Cardinals. The final score was 17-8. The team was very excited to play Newman the following day for the championship.
The Sacred Heart vs. Newman championship game was scheduled to kick off on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Newman. However, in the early afternoon, the ASH coaches were informed that the game was canceled due to a Newman player testing positive for COVID forcing the entire Newman team into quarantine. After deliberation by the NOAL board of directors, Sacred Heart was declared the winner of the NOAL championship. Congratulations to the 7th/8th grade team for an outstanding season.
In total, there were four NOAL championships won by the Sacred Heart basketball and soccer teams. The future of Sacred Heart basketball and soccer is extremely bright.
