Tennis goes 1-1
Last week, the Cardinals played three lines of doubles against St. Martin’s. Sacred Heart was dominant in their efforts and took all three lines easily. All juniors represented the Cardinals, and the three duos that earned victories were
May Manning ’21 and
Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21,
Grace Evans ’21 and
Gracie Jenkins ’21, and
Virginia Edrington ’21 and
Julia Gelé ’21.
On Monday, the Cardinals faced a very strong team from Mt. Carmel.
Sofia Rodriquez ’23 faced the 2019 Division I State Runner-up. It was a challenging match, and Sofia was able to hold her own. Sofia did drop the match, but earned valuable experience as she looks towards the State qualification process.
Molly Moore ’20 represented the Cardinals at line two singles. Molly took the first set 6-2 and had to make adjustments in the second set as her opponent kept challenging her. Molly fought until the end and took the second set 6-4 and the match. Line one doubles was a battle.
Mariella Congeni ’23 and
Virginia Crocker ’25 took on the 2019 Division I State Semifinalists. Early on, the Cardinals showed some nerves and dropped the first set 2-6. In the second set, the pair settled down and made some adjustments. They fought back to take the second set 6-3 and force a 10 point tiebreaker. The tiebreaker did not start the way the Cardinals would have liked and found themselves down 3-8. Mariella and Virginia fought for every rally and slowly began to inch their way back. The Cardinals lost 8-10, but this duo showed a lot of heart, fight, and that they have a bright future ahead.
Line two doubles had a junior duo of May Manning ’21 and
Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21. May and Elizabeth had some good rallies and fought to earn games in the match, but were unable to take the match, 3-6, 2-6. Line three doubles for the Cardinals was another junior pair.
Gracie Jenkins ’21 and
Grace Evans ’21 represented the Cardinals in a nail biter of a match. Gracie and Grace lost the first set 3-6, but rebounded in set two to win 6-2 and force a 10 point tiebreaker. The Cardinals fought for every point but lost 6-10 in the tiebreaker. The Cardinals were challenged on Monday against the Cubs and will look to use this experience as they play out the remainder of the regular season and begin the State tournament qualification process. The Cardinals will be back in action next Monday against Newman at 4 p.m. at City Park.
