Track & Field Continues to Achieve Personal Bests
The Newman Invitational had 16 teams competing on the girl’s side as the Sacred Heart track and field team went to City Park immediately following their annual Rally Day festivities. The Cardinals finished a very respectable 4th out of 16 total scoring teams. This was accomplished against many schools that have much larger enrollments than we do.
Our first points of the meet came in the high jump, where Olivia Boyd ’22 and Charlotte Bush ’25, did an excellent job of performing their best at the right time. Charlotte, competing in her first high jump competition, finished at 4’4”, while Olivia set her sights on nailing down her approach, and it paid off for her, because she tied her personal record of 5’0” and captured 1st place. Just a few yards away, in the long jump, Lulu Real ’23 and Ekua Commey ’22 were scoring valuable points of their own, as Ekua lept 14’8.5” for 5th, and Lulu soared into 1st place with a jump of 15’5”. In the shot put, Allie Langhetée ’23 threw a personal record of 26’5”. Lilly Moreau ’21 scored in the discus with a throw of 79’1”. The 4x200 relay of Charlotte Bush ’25, McCall Schlosser ’22, Ekua Commey ’22 and Lulu Real ’23, ran a season best time of 1:52.49 for 3rd place. The 1600 meters saw Charlotte Johnston ’26 drop 23 seconds on her personal record in 6:11.95, while Olivia McGoey ’21, running her first race of the season, did an outstanding job finishing in 4th in 5:41.16. Emily LeBlanc ’21 raced hard in the 100 meter hurdles to finish in 2nd place in 17.82, and Katherine Benton ’24, ran an outstanding race scoring in a personal record time of 18.80. In the 100 meters, Vivian Real ’26 in 13.13 and Lulu Real ’23 in 12.90, each blazed down the track earning personal records. Olivia Boyd ’22 scoring in the 800 meters, dropped her season best time by nine seconds in 2:31.71. The 4x100 relay of Vivian Real ’26, Aleyea Mogilles ’23, Aaliyah Oro ’24 and Lulu Real ’23 finished 4th in 54.15 with their fastest time so far. Emily LeBlanc ’21 ran a three second season best in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing 4th in 52.20. The 200 meters had a personal record from Ekua Commey ’22 – 27.72 and a season best from McCall Schlosser ’22 – 28.26. The last event we scored in for the meet was the 3200 meters, where Leah Varisco ’26 – 3rd in 12:32, showed her strength once again in a 22 runner race. For a full list of results, please click here.

Tennis Fights Hard Against Newman
Last Monday, the varsity tennis team played Newman at UNO. Going into this big match undefeated, they were looking to continue their winning streak with hopes of taking down a talented Newman team for the first time in years. First up was Olivia Boyd ʼ22, playing the first line singles. Olivia fought hard against her very talented opponent. She was able to win a few games, but unfortunately lost the match. Sofia Rodriguez ʼ21, playing the other singles line showed her value as a reliable team member and an extremely patient and steady player, easily taking down the Greenies’ line two singles player 6-2, 6-0. The doubles matches were all the while heating up. Mariella Congeni ʼ23 and Virginia Crocker ʼ25 played line one doubles against two senior Greenies, both signed to play college tennis in the fall. Congeni and Crocker started strong, playing very aggressive tennis, and it paid off. They took the first set 6-3. The second set, the duo seemed to take their foot off the gas, and the Greenies took advantage of this and won the second set 6-2. This brought up a full third set. Congeni and Crocker were off to a great start to the third, beginning the set 2-0. Newman fought back and tied it up at 2-2. After a coaching break, the girls went back out and had Newman on the ropes at 5-3. The cardinals had match points that they weren’t able to convert, and Newman came back again, tying it at 5-5. The Cardinals took the next game and the lead and were up 6-5. Again after having match points, Newman won the next game tying the set at 6-6 and bringing up a tie-breaker for the third set. Again, Congeni and Crocker had a big lead up in the tiebreaker 5-3. The very experienced Newman doubles team hung on and were able to eventually come back and win the tiebreaker to win the third set 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker for the third). This was a very tough loss for the new pair but since this was only the second time Congeni and Crocker have played a school match together, they proved they are a team to beat and with more match play and experience, will have lots of success together.

A similar story was being played out with the line three doubles team of Cat Bonura ʼ22 and Charlotte Johnston ʼ26. Bonura and Johnston were down 2-5 in the first set and came back winning the next five games in a row to win that set 7-5. The second set, the team also started out behind but was unable to come back and lost the second set. Bonura and Johnston began the third set with the rest of the team finished and cheering them on. The third set unfortunately didn’t go their way, and they lost in the third set. May Manning ʼ21 and Elizabeth Maniscalco ʼ21 played line two doubles against a very strong Newman team of two, year round, tournament tennis players and came up short. Overall, the Cardinals were very close to taking the win from the Greenies last week. Sacred Heart tennis hasn’t been this close to a victory over Newman in years, and they showed Newman that they need to prepare for the Cardinals come regionals and state. This Sacred Heart tennis team has a bright future for sure.

Golf Enjoys the Nice Weather and Extra Practice
The golf team has been busy practicing in preparation for the Wednesday New Orleans Area Golf League. The last two matches have been cancelled because of bad weather, and the team will take a break from playing due to the Easter holidays. The team has been taking advantage of this extra time to get work in on the golf course. Last Monday the team practiced and played a couple holes at Audubon Golf Club. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and it allowed the girls to play extra holes. Caroline Hales ’26 hit a beautiful 8 iron onto the green on hole number six that allowed her to score a par on the hole. Grace Gunn ’27 had a beautiful up and down on hole number five to win the hole. Sophie Lo ’26 hit the drive of the day on hole number nine when she hit the middle of the fairway to outdrive everyone else. Susan LeClerq ’22 drained a 15ft putt on hole number four to win the hole. The girls have been improving each time out on the course. The team looks forward to getting back to playing matches.

Prep Softball
On Monday, the softball team played McGehee and cruised to a 17-2 win over the Hawks. The Cardinals put forth a strong effort from the batter's box with triples by both Allie Genard ’28 and Sarah Wanek ’28. Eleanor Erazo-Pierson ’26 went 2 for 2 with a single and a double. Kai Jones ’25, Maddie LeBlanc ’28, Ellie Habetz ’26, and Ellie Spaulding ’26 all hit singles. Gray Gibbs ’26 also made a great catch in right field.
On Wednesday, the Cardinals played Kehoe France and kept their winning streak alive with a 12-1 victory. The team continued their week with another day of solid hitting. René Charles ’26 hit a homerun while Gray Gibbs ’26 earned a double. Olivia Monsted ’26 came through at the plate with her triple. The Cardinals are now 5-1 for the season.

Prep Track
This past Thursday, the middle school track team invited McGehee over for a friendly dual relay meet competing in the 4 x100, 4x200, and 4x400. McGehee offered us some great competition, and our girls were able to take first in each relay.
On Saturday, we competed in our first away meet at St. Martin’s Episcopal School. Unfortunately, the field events were cancelled due to the rain making the field areas too sloppy for competition. As for the running events, our girls had very solid and impressive performances in the unexpected heat. The remainder of the season looks bright, and we can’t wait to compete again.
