Tennis Team Finishes Third in State Tournament
On Wednesday, the varsity tennis team headed to Monroe, Louisiana for the LHSAA Division III State Championship tournament. Having only qualified 4 of 5 possible lines to compete, they headed in with a disadvantage. The Cardinals took their courts on Thursday morning starting at 8 a.m. to gain points for the overall score for the team. Mariella Congeni ʼ23 and Olivia Boyd ʼ22 were the singles players for the team and started off with two quick wins for two points for ASH. Congeni played an opponent from Oakdale and won 6-0, 6-0. Boyd played an Episcopal of Baton Rouge opponent and won 6-1,6-0. Next, doubles pair Sofia Rodriguez ʼ23 and her partner Virginia Crocker ʼ25 easily advanced past a team from Notre Dame winning 6-0, 6-1. May Manning ʼ21 and Elizabeth Maniscalco ʼ21 took on a team from St. Louis Catholic winning 6-1, 6-1. All four lines advanced to the round of 16 earning four points for the team.
The round of 16 was equally as successful with all four lines winning again. The highlight of this round was the team of Manning and Maniscalco. They faced an important match against a team from University High. This was an important match because as the tournament advanced, it became clear that the three teams in the running for the championship and runner-up were Sacred Heart, Newman and U High. The two seniors who have worked together now for years showed all who watched their grit, athleticism, and Cardinal spirit and put together a true team win beating an experienced U High team 6-3,6-1 taking a point from U High and notching another point for the Cardinals. Mariella Congeni ʼ23 again took care of business beating another opponent from Episcopal 6-0, 6-0 while Rodriguez and Crocker beat a team from North Webster 6-1, 6-0. Olivia Boyd ʼ22 also had success in the round of 16 winning 6-1,6-0 over Catholic New Iberia. At this point, all of the Sacred Heart players had advanced into the quarterfinals of the state tournament, something that hasn’t happened in a very long time.

The quarterfinals began with Newman in the lead, Sacred Heart in second place and University High in third. On the singles courts, Congeni faced the regional champion from the Baton Rouge region, a senior from Parkview Baptist who is playing collegiate tennis in the fall. Her third match of the day started around 4:00 after rain left the courts very hot and extremely humid. The Baton Rouge regional champion started out with a quick lead over Congeni, 3-0. Congeni fought back with all she had and was able to win three games in the first set losing that set 3-6. The second set, Congeni seemed to gain strength and came out with the first game going her way. The second set was back and forth with Congeni ahead many times including at 5-4. After losing a few set points, the set was tied at 5-5. Congeni won the next game and was up again 6-5. Again, after multiple set points, Congeni just couldn’t convert and the set was tied 6-6 bringing a tie breaker for the set. The seven point tie breaker began with Congeni out the gates with a hefty lead of 6-4. Despite playing incredible defense, running down ball after ball and fighting her heart out, she dropped two more set points and ended up losing in the tie breaker 6-8. Her Parkview Baptist opponent ended up dominating in the semi-finals and was singles runner up. Mariella was so close to upsetting the regional champion and her teammates and coaches were so incredibly proud of her fight.
The doubles team of Manning and Maniscalco also were fighting on the doubles court against another regional champion from region three, Newman’s dominant line 1 doubles team. The end of their Sacred Heart athletic career was full of heart, fight, and grace. These two seniors exemplify sportsmanship and have been true role models for their teammates. They will truly be missed.
Another battle was underway with Rodriguez and Crocker playing the Baton Rouge regional doubles champions, a team that has been playing together for years. The Cardinals started with a 3-0 lead. After many deuce games, the experienced team from U high came back to tie the first set 3-3. Unfortunately the first set went the way of U High winning 6-4. The second set was also filled with deuce games but this time, the Cardinals could not convert these games into wins and lost 1-6 in the second set. The last Cardinal up was Olivia Boyd ʼ22 who had no problems getting through her quarterfinal round beating her opponent from Catholic New Iberia 6-0, 6-1. Olivia became the last Cardinal standing at the end of the day, ready to advance to the semi-final round on Friday. Friday morning, the Cardinals woke up to rain and hours of delays. By the time Boyd took the court after a seven hour delay, the entire team was ready to cheer on their teammate. Olivia faced the eventual state champion from Newman, who hadn’t lost more than two games in a match thus far. Olivia played very well and took two games in the second set but would come up short. Team totals for Sacred Heart and U High were now tied at nine, heading into the finals. Even though U High did not win another match, they were awarded the tie break half of a point (because they had a doubles line in the finals) and the runner-up position. Sacred Heart finished third overall, but the girls saw how close they were despite tough draws for some of them and despite not qualifying a full five lines. The results left the Cardinals very hungry and ready for next year. Grace Evans ʼ21 and Gracie Jenkins ʼ21, as well as the two team managers, Elizabeth Brooks ʼ21 and Sarah Dowd ʼ21, made the trip to Monroe in true team spirit, even though it meant they missed their senior retreat. This team is one of true friendship, support and respect, and hopefully this will continue for years to come. Let’s go, Cardinals!

Track is Headed to State
The Regional track & field meet took place at West Feliciana High School on Wednesday, April 28. The team had participants in nearly all of the events offered after qualifying the week before at the District Meet. Only the top three finishers in each event at Regionals qualify for state, so it is never an easy task to make it there. The main goal of the team is for all athletes to try their best against their competitors and the clock or measuring tape, and if that is done, all should be pleased with the outcome. Our athletes did an amazing job during their events and if they did not qualify for the state meet, they gave it their all. Golf Has Outstanding Showing at State
Last Tuesday, Cassidy Lambert '21 played in the Regional Championship at Beaver Creek Golf Club. This would be Cassidy's first 18 hole match of the season after returning to golf from a previous injury. Cassidy shot even par 72 to earn a trip to the State Championships. This would be her sixth trip in her career to play in the LHSAA State Finals. On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Cassidy played in the championships for one final time. She had a couple of missed putts on day one that put her back in 7th place overall. On Tuesday, she brought her A game and shot 4-under par 70 which tied her for the lowest round of the day out of all divisions. She hit every fairway and made some exceptional chips and putts to help climb to the top and finish 3rd place overall and earn All-State honors.
Cassidy has played in the State Tournament for six years and has earned All-State honors every year. She leaves a legacy to the Sacred Heart golf program and has inspired many young golfers to want to play golf. Stars come and go but legends leave a lasting impression. Cassidy will continue her golf career at the University of South Alabama.

Prep Track
The middle school track team completed their season at the NOAL Championship this past Saturday at St. Martin’s Episcopal. The competition was tough, and the girls knew what they had to do to pull off a win. Not only did they succeed, but they rallied with the support and motivation of each other throughout the entire day. It was a long and hot day, and each athlete finished their competition with the cheers of their teammates. Congratulations to the 5th and 6th grade team for placing 1st overall in their division! The 7th and 8th team placed 2nd overall in the 7th/8th grade division. Many girls won individual medals for their individual events, and they will receive those at our end of the season pizza party. Congratulations ladies for a fantastic season and for all of your hard work.

Prep Tennis
Congratulations to the tennis team for a great season! Last week, they concluded with the NOAL tournament at Audubon. We were able to enter four lines of doubles in the tournament and the girls played very well. Line 1 doubles of Elodie Scafidel ’26 and Lulu Centola ’25 were able to win their first match, 8-5. They advanced to the semifinals but came up short. Lanie Schreiber ’25 and Emily Dufour ’25 played line two, and Ryan McIntyre ’28 and Lily Centola ’25 represented our line three. Both fought hard but lost in the quarterfinal round. Line 4 consisting of Elise Scafidel ’28 and Ellie Brennan ’27 were able to advance to the semifinals with an 8-2 victory but would eventually fall short in the next round. We are so proud of our tennis team! Go Cardinals!
