Volleyball earns the Stanley W. Ray, Jr. Tournament Championship Title
The JV and Varsity volleyball teams opened up their season on the road at Ben Franklin. JV took the first set against the Falcons, but the Falcons came back to earn the second set victory to force the tiebreaker set. It was neck and neck, but the Falcons edged out JV 15-12 to earn the victory. It was a hard fought match, and JV proved that they are a talented group that we look forward to watching this season. Varsity followed the JV match with a high energy, intense, back and forth match. Each set was very close, but the Falcons edged out the Varsity for the victory.
Varsity had to rebound quickly as they hosted the Stanley W. Ray, Jr. Varsity Tournament. The Cardinals opened up the tournament with a victory, 25-23, 25-19, over divisional opponent John Curtis. Next, the Cardinals would face Hannan who eliminated the Cardinals last year from the State Tournament in the Quarterfinals and went on to earn the Division IV State Championship Title.
|
Hannan led early on in the set, but at 7-8 the Cardinals pushed passed the Hawks to take a 12-8 lead and never looked back. The Cardinals earned a 25-18, 25-19 victory over the Hawks. The third match of the day was against the Doves of St. Scholastica. Sacred Heart controlled the first set with a 25-11 victory. SSA made some adjustments, and the Cardinals trailed the majority of the set. The Cardinals’ fight was tested as they tied the game at 20-20.
The Cardinals from there were able to clinch the victory and the tournament championship title. During the tournament, the offense was led by
May Manning ’21 and
Isabella Guarisco ’21 with 15 kills each.
May also led the team from the service line with eight aces.
Bailey Axelrad ’21 led the defense with 26 digs.
Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21 led the team with 26 assists throughout the tournament. JV and Varsity will be back in action on Thursday at Hannan. The Cardinals look forward to having their first home match on Tuesday, September 17th for Give ASH day!

Stanley W. Ray, Jr. Cross Country Relay
The inaugural Stanley W. Ray Jr. Relays held on Wednesday, September 4 in Audubon Park was a huge success and a great opportunity for many local teams to kickoff their season with a test of a 1-mile run. While temperatures were high, the shade offered by the majestic oak trees that line the bridle path was a welcomed commodity.
The Sacred Heart A varsity relay team of
Olivia McGoey '21,
Caroline Nusloch '21,
Mariella Congeni '23, and
Olivia Boyd '22 ran very well (
25:20) and came up just short with only two seconds separating them from Lusher Charter School which finished first. The Sacred Heart B team of
Emily LeBlanc '21,
Olivia Gaines '20,
CC Johnson '23, and
Cali Jane Luetkemeier '23 also finished strong (
25:44) for 3rd place overall. In the JV 1-mile race,
Andrea Bohorquez '20 finished first for the Cardinals in 6:42 with
Audrey Lemann '21 in 7:00 and
Ellie Sundell '20 in 7:04 following close behind.

On this past Saturday, four runners made their way to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, for the HOKA Invitational 2-mile at St. Stanislaus High School.
Olivia Boyd '22 finished 2nd overall with a time of 12:44, and
Olivia Gaines '20 finished in 8th place in 14:06.
Caroline Nusloch '21 and
Mariella Congeni '23, both fighting a mild sickness, ran through their pain to post times of 15:06 and 15:10 for 15th and 16th out of 49 total runners.

Prep Volleyball
Last week, our middle school volleyball teams traveled to Country Day for their first match of the season. With very few practices under their belt, all three teams played well and showed room for improvements early in the season.
The first match was the 7/8 Red team. They got off to a slow start dropping the first set 13-25, but were able to make some adjustments to keep set two much closer with a score of 21-25. The 7/8 White team followed and struggled to find a good rhythm. They would drop both sets to the Cajuns with scores of 17-25 and 15-25 but will continue to improve with more practice time. The final match of the afternoon was our 6th Red team. This game was very close and exciting to watch. Although they were unable to come away with the victory, this team proved that they can hang with one of the better teams in Country Day. They would lose both sets 22-25 and 19-25.
The next matches will be for our 7/8 Red and White teams this Tuesday as they take on Newman. Good luck, Cardinals!

Prep Cross Country
Last Wednesday, Sacred Heart hosted the inaugural Stanley W. Ray Jr. Relays. This was the first race of the cross country season, and the girls had been preparing to race in the one mile run around Audubon Park. The girls loaded the bus to make the trip to the park and all of them talked about how nervous they were to run in their first meet of the season.
The team gathered together as a group to stretch and talk about the race. Coach Jenny Caro and Coach Leslie Schroth gave the young runners some tips on running the course and some race strategy. The girls were warriors and ran their hearts out. Sacred Heart had over 30 girls compete in the middle school races. The top 10 runners in each race received race t-shirts. Sacred Heart had a number of runners that earned a top 10 finish.
Leah Varisco '26 in
6:20 was the top runner in the 6th grade & under race, and
Carolina Mehaffie '24 in
6:35 took first place in the 7th and 8th grade race. The girls had a great time competing and cheering on their teammates. Way to go, Cardinals!
