Swimming Prepares for First Meet
It has been a tough start to the swimming season. The swim team has been working hard to overcome many obstacles this year, such as COVID-19, all the mandated restrictions, cancellations of practice due to hurricanes, and changing our pool location and practice times. The swimmers are working hard to get back to peak physical fitness. Not everyone on the roster is at the same level, but one thing that is expected from all the swimmers at the top and bottom of the depth chart is to give maximum effort. Coach Kara is proud of each swimmer’s fortitude and appreciates the positive attitude and energy in practice. Keep up the strong work in the pool!
We're giving a Big Cardinal welcome to our new swimmers, Reagan Hayes ’26 and Elodie Scafidel ’26! The Cardinals will compete in their first meet of the season this Friday, at Riverside. Good luck ladies!

Successful First Race for Cross Country
After months of summer training and nearly a month of being back in school for on campus practices, the cross country season began with the Cardinals running this past weekend in the Ponchatoula High Invitational.
A steady sprinkle of rain for the entirety of the meet made for slightly slower times than most would have liked, but the four time defending 3A State Champions were ready to run. With limited entries allowed, only ten runners would participate in this meet within two different races. The team finished 4th out of 16 teams and 128 total runners. Leading the way for the Cardinals over the three mile course in 3rd place overall was Olivia McGoey ’21, the defending Individual State Champion, in 19:51. Making her varsity debut, Leah Varisco ’26 finished 19th in 21:40, an awesome first race for a talented young runner. Olivia Boyd ’22 finished in 21:52 for 22nd place and coming back from a season ending injury last year, proved that determination and hard work does pay off. CC Johnson ’23 pushed herself during the race to 26th in 22:09, showing her conditioning is at a very high level. Finishing out the top 5 scorers, Caroline Nusloch ’21 crossed in 22:45 for 30th place.
The remaining runners were Mariella Congeni ’23 in 23:17, Katherine Benton ’24 in 23:58, Cali Jane Luetkemeier ’23 lost a shoe early but continued and finished the race, Emily LeBlanc ’21 and Katie Kleehammer ’22.
The Cardinals run this Saturday in the St. Scholastica Invitational. Good Luck, Cardinals!

Volleyball Off to a Strong Start
JV volleyball opened the season on September 9 with a three set loss to Hannan. The varsity team followed with an exciting start to their season. After losing the first game 21-25, they fought back to take the next three games from the Hawks to secure the victory for the Cardinals. The following day, both teams traveled to Cabrini, and the JV team defeated the Crescents in two sets. The Cardinals played very well with Isabelle Moore ’23 tallying 10 kills, and Allie Langhetee ’23, Brooke Habetz ’23, and Paige Ready ’23 serving up a slew of aces. Varsity followed with a victory over Crescents winning three out of the first four games to secure the match. On September 12 , the Cardinals hosted John Curtis for both JV and V matchups. The JV team was ready to play, and the Cardinals won in two sets. Lucy Vaicius ’23 passed very well from the libero position, and Kate Farris ’24 and Gigi Gibbens ’24 had some big hits and blocks. Varsity was missing a key player in Lindsey Magaw ’21 and struggled to find their rhythm. They would drop the match in three games, but not before giving the Patriots a run in the final game and playing point for point until the very end.
Last Wednesday, the JV and V teams hosted two very talented Dominican teams. The JV team ran into a very tough serving team and lost in two sets. The Varsity team came out strong and shocked their opponent by taking the first set, 25-19. But Dominican would regroup and began to settle in and would prove to be too much for the Cardinals, taking the next three sets to win the match. The Cardinals showed that they are capable of competing at a high level and played the best game of their season so far. On Saturday, the Varsity team hosted an undefeated Ben Franklin team and easily took the win in three sets. This performance puts Varsity with a record of 3-2 and the JV 2-2 so far for the season. Today, JV and Varsity will play at home versus Ursuline, followed up by a trip to Houma to battle the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers on Wednesday. Go Cardinals!
