Cross Country
With distance training ramping up over the past two weeks in preparation for their first 3-mile race of the year, the cross country team toed the starting line with some butterflies. This past weekend Sacred Heart participated in the Holy Cross/ Dominican Invitational held in City Park. The race tested their training, and the first half of it showed them that they had prepared properly. Muscle pains and proper hydration are two things that can factor into one’s overall time. During this race, some of our runners tested themselves for a predetermined distance, while others found their limit by pushing the proverbial envelope.
Olivia Boyd ’
22 and
Olivia McGoey ’
21 led all runners in the race through the first mile and a half while their teammates trailed slightly behind. Boyd was testing her sore calf and knee and finished two miles before taking herself out of the race as was planned. McGoey continued and finished 2nd overall in a talented field in a new personal record of 19:51.
Olivia Gaines ’
20 pushed herself to her limit and at the 2 ¼ mile marker, had to drop out also. The rest of the runners continued on and finished as follows:
Caroline Nusloch ’21 (22:51),
Mariella Congeni ’23 (23:32),
Emily LeBlanc ’21 (23:33),
Audrey Lemann ’21 (23:38),
Cali Jane Luetkemeier ’23 (24:01),
Andrea Bohorquez ’20 (24:27),
Katie Kleehammer ’22 (25:15) and
Emily Bulloch ’23 (31:09).
Overall, the team finished 9th out of 13 teams and looks to improve for their next race which will be this Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Newman Invitational in Audubon Park. Hope to see our Cardinal supporters there!!! The JV race will begin at 3:00 pm followed by the Varsity race at 5 pm.

Volleyball
The Cardinals had a busy but successful week with JV and Varsity earning a 9-4 combined record in 5 days. The week started off with a spirited Give ASH day and victories for JV and Varsity over St. Martin’s. Thursday, the Cardinals traveled to the Northshore to take on St. Scholastica. For the second year in a row, SSA and ASH stood together and honored our Military and First Responders prior to the start of the matches. In addition, the two teams wore red, white and blue in appreciation of our heroes.
Varsity and JV were very focused as they both earned victories in straight sets. With a quick turnaround, both JV and Varsity were back in action in the Catholic League tournament. JV went 2-2 on the weekend. After a tough loss to Dominican, the Cardinals rebounded with an exciting two-set match victory over Cabrini on Friday night. On Saturday, JV could not defeat E.D. White but finished the tournament strong with a dominant win over Vanderbilt Catholic. Varsity started off the tournament with a loss to Dominican and a loss to Pope John Paul. The Cardinals were a little too inconsistent during these matches. However, the Cardinals know they can clean that aspect of their game up going forward.
On Saturday morning, Varsity faced our network school from Grand Coteau. In a 3 set battle, the Cardinals edged out the Saints for the victory. Next, Varsity faced Chapelle, the 2018 Division I State Runner-ups. After losing the first set 23-25, the Cardinals found their groove and won the second set 25-17. As they headed into the 3rd set, the Cardinals used their momentum from set 2 to earn a 15-10 victory over the Chipmunks. The court was running behind, so the Cardinals did not have a long break before facing Hannan for the third time in two weeks. The first set was tight, but the Cardinals were able to take the victory 25-23. In set two, Hannan made some adjustments that earned them the 25-21 set two victory over the Cardinals. In the third set, the Cardinals were focused and it was evident by their dominant 15-3 victory over the Hannan Hawks. Over the course of the week with seven matches, the Cardinals went 5-2 and
May Manning ’21
led the team with 9 aces and 49 kills.
Bailey Axelrad ’21
led the team with 108 digs.
Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21
was the assist leader with 94, and
Riley Brennan ’21
led the team in blocks. Both JV and Varsity will be back in action on Tuesday at Dominican! Gooo Cardinals!

Swimming
Congrats to the Cardinal swimmers for placing first in their last meet. They beat St. Martin's, Thomas Jefferson, De La Salle, John Curtis, East Jefferson and Kenner Discovery High School for the win.
Congratulations to
Karson Dumas
’
21 for making state qualifying times in both the 50 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle. Everyone showed great sportsmanship to their team members and swimmers on other teams by supporting the first, as well as the last, swimmer in the water. We are very proud of the way you represent Sacred Heart. Keep it up, Cardinals! The swim team will compete again on Friday, September 27 at Newman for 3:45 pm.

Prep Volleyball
Last week our 7/8 Red team started out with a convincing victory over St. Martin’s. The Cardinals took the match winning 25-17 and 25-23.
Ava Arch
’
24 recorded six aces for the team. On Thursday, both our 7/8 Red team and 6th Red team hosted McGehee in Rosary Gym. Our 6th graders were able to pull out the victory in an exciting three set match. Both Cardinal teams were very focused on pass, set, and hit. They struggled at times as the Hawks would send the ball right back in one hit, but the Cardinals were patient and continued to work on the fundamentals of the game. Our 6th graders were able to get over 40 pass, set, and hit combinations, while their opponent only tallied three! Although the 7/8 Red team came up short in three close sets, it was clear that both our 6th and 7/8 teams are going to be prepared for the next level of volleyball in the near future. Our 6th White teams traveled to Newman on Friday to close out the week. They played two different Newman teams as well as McGehee.

Prep Cross Country
The Middle School Cross Country team competed in the Holy Cross/ Dominican Invitational this past Saturday at City Park.
This was the girls first 2-mile race of the season. There were over 300 runners in the race and over 20 teams. The starting line was packed with nervous runners. Because of the large number of entries, the girls race had to start four minutes behind the boys. The girls ran hard and finished strong coming down the stretch. The team finished 3rd overall with a very impressive showing.
Vivian Real finished 10th overall and earned herself a t-shirt. We had a big pack of runners sprinting to the finish line in the top 25. We have been increasing the distance at practice and working on foot speed to get the girls prepared to race in a 2-mile run. Our next race is Thursday at Audubon Park for 4:00. Good luck, Cardinals!

We want to give a BIG thanks to our Booster Club and their members for the varsity gifts that were distributed over the last couple of weeks. The varsity volleyball, cross country, and swim teams received their yard signs and magnets to show their Cardinal spirit at home and on the road! Special thanks to the booster board members that came to the practices to help distribute the gifts!
