Cross Country Kicks Off the 2021 Season
After three weeks of delays, the Sacred Heart cross country team finally opened their season with a race at St. Thomas Aquinas in Hammond on Friday, Sept. 24th . The course still showed signs of Hurricane Ida in the wooded sections of the course with downed trees and somewhat rougher than usual terrain. Loads of fresh sand covered the ruts from the tire tracks of the vehicles used to clear the course. However, the runners were excited to get back to racing, and it was an opportunity to put their training to the test. The team had a great showing and ran some very impressive times for the start of the season. The team finished 3rd out of 10 teams with a total of 96 finishers in the race. Vivian Real ’26 finished first for Sacred Heart and 11th overall in 21:18. Charlotte Johnson ’26 finished second for the team in 21:57 for 18th place. Both runners earned the prized t-shirts for finishing in the Top 20. Mariella Congeni ’23 ran a very strong race to finish in 22:36 for the 23rd spot, while Carolina Khatib ’25 running in her very first 3 mile race, finished in 23:31 for 32nd after running her last mile 46 seconds faster than her second mile, passing up numerous runners along the way. Katherine Benton ’24 ran 23:50 to round out our Top 5 scoring runners to finish 37th. Chiara Bazan ’25 in 24:49 for 48th, also ran in her first 3 mile cross country race of her career and did quite well in her debut.

Volleyball Continues to Improve
The ASH JV Team travelled to Belle Chasse last Tuesday for the Battle of the Cardinals.
The team played well, winning 25-11 and 25-13. Kate Farris ’24, Ellie Bendich ’24 and Mary Elise Meyer ’24 all had three kills to lead the way for the Sacred Heart JV. Delivering the nice sets for those kills was Lily Stone ’24. Next up was the varsity. They took down Belle Chasse 3-1. The offense was led by kills from MC Mazzanti ’23 (16 kills), Cami Davis ’23 (12 kills), and Gigi Gibbens ’24 (8 kills) with assists from Marian Graffagnini ’22 (25 assists) and Brooke Habetz ’23 (14 assists). The defense was led by digs from Cat Bonura ’22 (28 digs) and Katherine Hale ’23 (13 digs), and other key plays made by Lucy Vaicius ’23. Serves from Kate Ready ’22, MC Mazzanti ’23, Katherine Hale ’23, Brooke Habetz ’23, and Marian Graffagnini ’22 helped lead the team to nine total aces.
On Thursday, the Pope John Paul Jaguars came to town to take on the Cardinals. The first set was back and forth, but the Cardinals missed a few too many serves that came back to bite them. They ended up losing that game 25-17. Mary Elise Meyer ’24 led the way for the Cardinals with two blocks, four kills and did not miss a serve. Charlotte Bush ’25 and Claire Moriarty ’25 both had good serving runs. In the second set, the Cardinals played much better. Pope jumped out to a quick lead, but the Cardinals closed the gap to get to 18-19. There were several exciting rallies, however the Jaguars pulled the game out 25-21.
The varsity team defeated Pope John Paul II, who was looking for revenge after ASH defeated them in the State Championship last year. The Cardinals were led offensively by assists from Marian Graffagnini (25 assists) and Brooke Habetz (14 assists). Remaining dominant at the net were hitters MC Mazzanti (13 kills), Cami Davis (13 kills), and Gigi Gibbens (8 kills), with smart attacks and key plays from Isabelle Moore. Defense was led by libero, Cat Bonura (23 digs), and defensive specialist Katherine Hale (17 digs). Behind the service line, Marian Graffignini led the team with 5 aces, followed by help from Brooke Habetz, Kate Ready, and Katherine Hale to end with a total of 9 team aces. The JV and varsity Cardinals look forward to another great week in the gym as they travel to McGehee and John Curtis this week.

Middle School Volleyball
On Thursday, the 8th Pink team traveled to St. Pius. The Cardinals would fall short in three games, but not without some great hustle plays and an incredible comeback in game two sparked by the serving of Gisele Saborio ’26. Setting for the Cardinals was Gisele and Caitlin Brennan ’26 who did an excellent job of distributing the ball for some kills.
On Monday, the 7th Red and 6th Red team traveled to Christian Brothers. In the 6th Red game, Lucia Walsh ’28 accounted for seven aces, and Sarah Wanek ’28 would chip in with eight aces leading the Cardinals to victory, 25-8, 25-13. In the 7th Red game, Caroline Balart ’27 put up a solid effort with three kills, three assists, and five aces. Unfortunately, the Cardinals would fall to CBS by a score of 16-25, 21-25.
