They got off to a glorious start by taking first place over Cabrini, Haynes Academy, Mount Carmel Academy, Archbishop Chapelle, and Thomas Jefferson High School last Friday at the Riverside Meet.. All the swimmers on the team start with black caps for competition. Once a Cardinal swimmer achieves a State Qualifying time, she is awarded a red Sacred Heart cap. That bright red cap proudly symbolizes that this Sacred Heart swimmer will be representing her school at the State Championship Swim Meet. The following swimmers won their red cap during this meet:
Isabelle DeGruy ’24: 50 yd Freestyle
Karson Dumas ’21: 200 yd Freestyle
Reese LaCaze ’24: 200 yd individual Medely and 100 Breaststroke
Adriana Mehaffie ’21: 50 yd Freestyle
Natalia Mehaffie ’25: 50 yd Freestyle
Bella Mendez ’21: 200 yd Freestyle and 500 yd Freestyle
Several swimmers were very close to achieving a State Qualifying time. Coach Kara is also very proud of her 7th-grade swimmers, Reagan Hayes ’26 and Elodie Scafidel ’26, for swimming well in their first high school competition. The Cardinals will swim again today at Bissonet Country Club. Go get ’em, Cardinals!

Cross Country
The JV and varsity cross country team participated in the St. Scholastica Invitational this past Saturday. With the temperature dipping to 68° and the tranquility of the wooded trails, hills, and ponds of the course, the runners were excited to lace up their spikes and run the 3.25 mile race, which was a little longer than their normal 3 mile course. This extra distance obviously added unwanted time to an already tough course but they still pushed themselves to try to run as hard as they could given the circumstances. Olivia McGoey ’21 ran a tough race and held a slight lead as she passed the 2 mile marker. She made the final turn after a hilly last mile in the woods and lost a close footrace to the finish to take 3rd place overall. Leah Varisco ’26 ran another consistent race and picked off four runners over the last mile to finish in 19th. Caroline Nusloch ’21, Katherine Benton ’24, and Cali Jane Luetkemeier ’23 rounded out our top five finishers.
In the junior varsity 2.1 mile race, seven of the eight runners were competing in their first race of the season. They ran some exciting times considering their nerves and difficult course. Charlotte Johnston ’26 claimed 2nd place in 15:43 and ran most of it with a smile on her face in her first JV race. Following closely behind was Maria English ’24 - 16:16 in 6th place. Eliza Capella ’24 - 16:53, Katie Kleehammer ’22 - 17:02, Lilah Deynoodt ’26 - 17:14, Audrey Lemann ’21 - 17:23, McLaine Schlosser ’26 - 17:32 and Virginia Gardes ’24 - 18:09 rounded out the Cardinals runners.
The team will be in competition locally this Saturday, October 3rd, in City Park at the Country Day Classic. Come on out and support your Cardinals!

Volleyball
On Tuesday, JV and varsity hosted a young Ursuline squad and JV took the first victory 25-4, 25-3. Ellie Bendich ’24 went on a nice serving run of 17 straight points in the second set.
Varsity would follow, and they would defeat Ursuline in three straight games with a score of 25-19, 25-20, 25-16. Ursuline was aggressive, but had no answer for May Manning ’21 as she led the Rosary with 15 kills. Even though the Cardinals were missing starter Lindsey Magaw ’21 who is out with a back injury, they adjusted well without her. Isabella Guarisco ’21 played like a veteran in Lindsey’s absence. MC Mazzanti ’23 chipped in 13 kills. Middle hitter, Riley Brennan ’21, had 5 kills. Bailey Axelrad ’21 commanded the back court as our starting libero. Bailey, May and Catherine Bonura ’22 were almost perfect on their first pass to the setter. The serving was led by Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21 and Catherine Bonura ’21. Catherine also had some key diving digs that resulted in some crucial momentum swings. Our other middle, Cami Davis ’23, had a solid performance. Setters Elizabeth Maniscalco ’21 and Marian Graffignini ’22 did a nice job of distributing the ball.
The following day both teams headed to Houma to take on the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers. The JV came out playing very well and took care of business in two sets, winning 25-11, 25-15. Lily Stone ’24 had some big swings for the team, and Paige Ready ’23 and Lucy Vaicius ’23 sparked a tough defensive effort. Gigi Gibbens ’24 tallied six blocks which led to points for the Cardinals. The varsity was up next in front of a rowdy Terrier crowd. The Cardinals would fall in three sets, 19-25, 22-25, 16-26, but May Manning ’21 had another stellar performance. May added 12 kills, and Riley Brennan ’21 had five kills. Cami Davis ’23 had some nice blocks for the team. Bailey Axelrad ’21 again controlled the tempo with her uncanny back court skills. Catherine Bonura ’22 had some dynamic digs and a few aces.
On Thursday, the JV and varsity teams took a short trip to Nashville Avenue to take on the Lusher Lions. It was only the Lions’ second match of the season, and their inexperience showed as the JV Cardinals won 25-11, 25-1. Mary Elise Meyer ’24 had some solid swings, and Brooke Habetz ’23 went on a serving run of 23 straight points in the second set. The varsity team responded well against Lusher with a quick three game sweep, 25-11, 25-10, 25-12. The Cardinals completely controlled the match, and even more encouraging, some new players stepped up. Izabella Erazo ’22 had three kills, and Kate Ready ’22 had a great performance with her serving and digging.
The Cardinals eagerly look forward to their matches this week against St. Martin’s and De La Salle. Good luck, ladies!

Prep Cross Country
The Middle School cross country team opened up the season with a small dual meet versus MeGehee. The race took place on a 1.5 mile course at The Fly behind Audubon Park. Both schools were able to enter 14 runners to compete in the race. The girls were very nervous to compete in their first race of the season, but Coach Jenny told them to relax and just run with their heart. The girls lined up on the starting line and faced their fears head on.
Both teams took off very fast, but then found their stride at the halfway mark. It was a very difficult course with hills and uneven ground. Taylor Robert ’25 came in first for Sacred Heart and second overall with a very impressive time of 11:39. Abby Truxillo ’24 ran hard towards the finish line and came in second for her team with a time of 11:53. Maddy Do ’25 finished 8th overall with a time of 12:05. Emery Nolan ’25 competed in her first cross country race and finished first in her heat and 4th for the team with a very impressive time of 12:14.
