Indoor Track & Field
The 2022 Indoor Track & Field season kicked off with the LSU High School Qualifier this past weekend in Baton Rouge. Of the nine members of the team that competed, six were competing indoors for the very first time in their track & field careers.
All nine athletes from this past meet learned valuable lessons and will be better for it in the coming weeks of training and competing.
The following athletes competed in the meet in these events and some have already made the qualifying times or marks for the State Championship on February 19. The next and last chance to qualify is on February 5, where more members of the team will have opportunities to compete and try to achieve the times or marks to also qualify.

Soccer
The Cardinals faced McGehee last Tuesday, January 18 and lost a very close game 1-0, in which they were short-handed. In the second half, Carolina Mehaffie ‘24 nearly scored a goal when she fired a low shot that hit off the post. It was a great effort by the Cardinals and they look forward to finishing strong in the final week of the regular season. The Cardinals will face Pope John Paul II today at Pan Am Stadium. Don’t forget, Thursday is Senior Night for soccer as they take on Ursuline at 5:00 at Pan Am. Come on out and support our seniors!

Basketball
Due to some game cancellations, the basketball team did not play last week and instead used the time to recover and work on some skills at practice. Both JV and varsity pick back up with games today against Mt. Carmel and Thomas Jefferson respectively. The Cardinals are currently ranked #12 in Division II. Next week, the varsity will host Crescent City on Wednesday, February 2 for Senior Night. We hope to see you in the stands cheering for our seniors!

Middle School Soccer
In the week before the soccer playoffs, the 7th/8th Red Team was off and White Team played on Thursday against Ursuline. Despite the very cold conditions, the girls all came to the game, had a great attitude, and played with great effort in this game with playoff-seeding implications. The defense again was strong and led by center defender Olivia Keller ’26, and wing defenders Kate Cummings ’26 and Sofia Sercovich ’26. Unfortunately, Ursuline scored an unlucky goal but several strong saves (of better shots) by Goalie Addy Williams ’26 kept the White Team in the game. Midfielders Caitlin Brennan ’26, Ellie Spaulding ’26, and Shayde Randolph ’26 were particularly dominant in the second half, and forward Libby Stassi ’26 made some strong runs drawing multiple defenders. It was late in the game, on one of those runs where Libby attracted multiple defenders, that Meredith Cortez ’26 brought the ball up the right hand side and sent a hard shot into the goal with less than five minutes to play. The girls fought to score again but secured the 1-1 tie the White Team needed to play that beatable Ursuline team in the first round of the playoffs.

Middle School Basketball
The 5th grade team had a busy last week playing games against John Curtis, Holy Name and Trinity Episcopal. The John Curtis match-up was challenging for the young team but they played hard the entire game. Highlights include Mary Rose Ranger ’29 scoring a big bucket in the paint, Charlotte Hammel ’29 grabbing four rebounds, Amelia Hoffman ’29 and Claire Fromherz ’29 each with three steals defensively. Ellender Walpole’ 29 and Charlotte Hammel ‘29 continue to gain valuable experience running the team from the point guard position.
In the Holy Name game, the team had their highest offensive output of the season. Leading the way offensively was Birdie Berniard ’29 with four points and Amelia Hoffman ‘29 with two points. Elle Cummings ’29 and CoCo Rudolph ‘29 grab two rebounds apiece. A team defensive effort held Trinity to only 27 points for the game. Claire Fromherz ’29 was the defensive MVP for the game playing tenacious defense throughout the game, Stella Serovich ’29 and Ruark Murphy ’29 had three deflections and two steals in the game. Up Next for the team is the NOAL Championship in the 5th/6th South Division.
The 6th grade team had a big win last Thursday versus Louise McGehee by the final score of 34-10. Rosie Varisco ’28 and Courtney Habetz ’28 were true floor generals at point guard the entire game and controlled the pace of the game. Sarah Wanek ’28 led the team offensively with 16 points and 10 rebounds, the first double-double of the season. Sarah Wanek and Jade Neves ’28 made their presence felt on the defensive end making it challenging for any McGehee player to score. Camille Hymel ’28 and Therese Hymel ’28 had a twin connection going which caused havoc on the defensive end and finding each other for easy lay-ups on the offensive end. Maddie McNabb ’28 was aggressive to draw a foul and shoot our only two free throws of the game. Next up is the NOAL Championship in the 5th/6th North Division.
The 7th/8th team had their most challenging week of the season with hosting always tough John Curtis and last year's NOAL Championship runner-up, Trinity Episcopal. John Curtis started the game in a swarming 1-3-1 trapping defense which overwhelmed our team early in the game. Adjustments were made by the coaching staff but in the end Curtis won the game. Individual offensive highlights came from Lily Varisco ‘27 with seven points, Elizabeth Alford ’27 with four points, and Ruby Roumillat-Crowe ’27 scoring her first field goal of the season. As expected, the Trinity game was a tight match-up throughout the game with Trinity Episcopal winning 20-18. Lili Varisco ’27 led the team with seven points, Lili Rosenstein ‘26 chipped in with four points. Strong defensive efforts by Ellie Habatz ’26, Keira Marchese ’27, Gray Gibbs ’26 and Caroline Kenter ’27 helped keep the game close throughout. The team will close out the regular season on Friday versus St. Pius with the NOAL playoffs the following week.
