Tennis

Last week at Xavier University tennis center, the varsity tennis team won the Regional Championship with Mariella Congeni '23 claiming the Singles Champion Title. The varsity tennis team competed in the Regional Championship tournament to qualify for the upcoming state competition in Monroe. The first round of matches was a good round for the Cardinals with both singles lines and the three doubles lines all with victories or byes advancing them to the next rounds. The doubles team of Chiara Bazan '25 and Elise Scafidel ’28 won two rounds to qualify and gain two points for the Cardinals. The doubles team of Maria English '24 and Charlotte Johnston '26 made their way to the semi finals, beating Newman's line 3 doubles team along the way which was a huge momentum shift for the Cardinals, earning the team crucial points to put the Cardinals ahead of the Greenies, going into day two of play. The line 1 doubles team of Sofia Rodriguez '23 and Emmeline Singer '26 took care of business on day one also earning 3 points. Elise Griffith '27 qualified at the line 2 singles spot, then lost to the ED White line 1 player who eventually made it to the finals. Mariella Congeni '23 played line 1 singles and on day one gained 3 points for the Cardinals to conclude day 1 of play.

Day two was a big day starting with doubles. Maria English ’24 and Charlotte Johnston ’26 played well but were unable to defeat the Newman line 1 team. Sofia and Emmeline quickly defeated Newman's line 2 doubles team in the morning, advancing them to the finals. Mariella Congeni '23 defeated ED White's line 2 singles line. This put the Cardinals in a position to win the team title with just one more win from either line 1 singles or line 1 doubles. Mariella Congeni '23 came through with the victory. She did not lose a single game throughout the entire tournament with an overall game score of 48-0. Emmeline and Sofia fought hard and kept things close again against Newman but were unable to get the victory. This is the first Regional Championship for the Cardinals since 2017 and the first Regional Championship Singles title for Mariella Congeni '23. The job is not done, however, all 5 lines will travel to Monroe this week to play for the state title. Let's go, Cardinals!
