Varsity Tennis
Yesterday afternoon at City Park, the Varsity tennis team took on Country Day. Playing line 1 singles for the Cardinals was Sofia Rodriguez ’23. The Cajuns’ line 1 singles player was no match for Rodriguez who dominated with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Playing line 2 singles was Emmeline Singer ’26. Singer ’26 was going into the day with an undefeated record for the season, looking to continue her winning streak which she did without difficulty with an impressive score of 6-3, 6-0.
On the doubles courts, veteran duo Cat Bonura ’22 and Maria English ’24 easily gained another victory for the team with a score of 6-1, 6-1. At line 2 doubles, a new Cardinal pairing was battling the Cajuns. Easily winning the first set 6-2, the doubles team of Juliet Boyd ’24 and Ellie Brennan ‘27 had a closer second set which went to a tie breaker with the Cardinals on top 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). The second set was a good test of this young team’s patience and focus and a great match experience. Another veteran team of Elena Costello ’23 and Mallory Medo ’23 were poised for yet another victory on the courts. The girls did just that with a win and clinched the sweep for the team with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
The Cardinals have one more regular season match Friday against Ben Franklin and then it’s off to regionals for this talented team. The tournament will begin on Monday April 11 at 8 AM with the location TBD.

Varsity Track
The Cardinal track & field team participated in the Newman Keefe Hecker Invitational at West Jefferson last Friday and had a wonderful showing by numerous athletes in the field events and the running events. The meet was the largest thus far that the team has been a part of and the team fared very well overall, finishing 8th out of a total of 14 teams.
Highlights from the meet include personal records and season best records broken. Ekua Commey '22 at 15' 8.5" set a new personal record in the long jump for 5th place out of 25 jumpers. Juliet Boyd '24 in the triple jump also scored by finishing 5th with a jump of 29' 7.25" while Aleyea Mogilles '23 had her best jump of the season at 27' 10.75". Olivia Boyd '22 went 4' 10" in the high jump for 2nd place while Eileen Igoe '25 cleared a personal record of 4' 6" for 6th place and scored. Allie Langhetee '23 had a very busy meet with the javelin (69' 4"), shot put (25' 7" - personal record), and discus (76' 0") while Sophie Lo '26 also did the javelin (68' 10") and discus (66' 7.5"), both being personal records also. In the 4 x 800 meter relay, the team comprised of Leah Varisco '26 (2:38.5), Lily Varisco '27 (2:42.5), Abby Truxillo '26 (2:51.5) and Olivia Boyd (2:37.42), ran 2 miles combined around the track and finished in a very decent time of 10:49.92, which was fast enough for 3rd place overall, beating five other teams. The 4 x 200 M relay team finished in 1:53.75, and was composed of Libby Stassi '26, Aaliyah Oro '24, Charlotte Bush '25 and Ekua Commey '22. As in the previous three meets, the duo of Leah Varisco '26 and Colette English '27, found their toes on the starting line of the 1600 Meters, but in different heats this time. Colette was by herself for the first time and would not have her teammate setting the pace for her. She hung back in the lead pack for the first 800 meters and then took the lead and never looked back. She crossed the finish line before any other runner in her heat and dropped 7 seconds off her previous best and ran a new personal record of 5:56.34. After both races were completed, she would place 9th out of 21 runners. Next, Leah Varisco also bolted out with the lead group in her race of 11 runners and clicked off lap after lap and pushed herself. She made her move with 1 1/2 laps to go to race her way to a 3rd place overall, also in a new personal record while dropping a massive 12 seconds with a time of 5:41.62. The 100 meter hurdles had both Katherine Benton '24 and Charlotte Bush '25 running in the same heat together. Both athletes stepped to the starting line and after the 10 hurdles were completed, only .11 of a second separated the two, with Benton besting Bush, 19.15 to 19.26. The two would have another chance later in the meet to test their speed and stamina in the 300 meter hurdles, and this time Bush bested Benton, 53.51 for 7th overall to 56.19. When the 100 Meters was ready to go, Libby Stassi '26 and Aleyea Mogilles '23 had a carbon copy of the hurdles race, with Stassi in 14.42 and Mogilles in 14.54, only .12 separating them. Olivia Boyd '22 put her talents on the line in the 800 meters, an event that has come to be known as her specialty, and this time she brought along her classmate, Katie Kleehammer '22, for her very first individual 800 meter race. Katie went first and ran a personal record of 2:50.01. Next up was Olivia and by pushing herself down the final 100 meters, she nabbed one more spot at the finish line in a season best time of 2:31.12 and a 3rd place overall. The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Aleyea Mogilles '23, Libby Stassi '26, Aaliyah Oro '24 and Ekua Commey '22 passed the baton around one lap of the track with the smoothness that they have been working on and it paid off with a quick team time of 54.77.
Most runners think of the 400 meter dash as the ultimate test of one's toughness and bravery and the two runners for Sacred Heart on this night were McLaine Schlosser '26 and Malina Hull '24. They were in different heats and ran completely different strategies to the finish line. Malina took off like a bullet and led through the first 200 meters, but miscalculated her initial speed and faced the wall with 50 meters to go in the race. She would finish with a time of 1:15.93. In the next heat, McLaine Schlosser took a more controlled beginning to her 400 and cruised through the first 200 meters, worked the last turn, and then pushed to the finish in a time of 1:10. The last race for the Cardinals was the 200 meters and Aaliyal Oro '24 was our only participant this time. Oro bolted from her standing position and crossed the line in 28.93 for a decent time and a nice finish to a very successful meet for the entire team.
The next meet is this Thursday, April 7, at St. Martin's and will be the last official meet prior to the District Championship on Thursday, April 21 at West Jefferson High School.

MS Tennis
Middle school tennis competed against Ursuline on March 31 at City Park. Again, our girls played some great tennis! Elodie Scafidel ‘26 and Elise Scafidel ‘28 (8-4) and Becca Mogabgab ‘29 and Charlotte Jenkins ‘27 (8-2) showed effort and skill, and each doubles team pulled out a win! Ryan McIntyre’28 and Laine Suhren ‘29 (7-8) played a very exciting, close match. Initially, the girls were down in games, but they stayed positive and kept pushing to make it to a tie breaker! They did not get the win but we are so proud of their performance and of their great teamwork. Lilah Deynoodt ‘26 and Eleanor Kogos ‘28 were the last doubles team to play. They also had a very close match and competed up to the last point (6-8). The White Team participated in match play as well. Our focus for this team has been on serving and returning the ball, court position, and scoring. They are doing a great job and are working hard to improve their game. We have played 14 matches so far and have won 12. Wow, what a record! Keep it up, Cardinals!
