2023 LHSAA Division I State-Runner Ups: Big congratulations to the golf team for finishing as the 2023 LHSAA Division I State-Runner up yesterday and a huge congratulations to Jade Neves ’28 for finishing as 2023 Individual State Champion.

Tennis

The Varsity tennis team finished third in the state tournament last week in Monroe, with a singles individual state runner-up title for Mariella Congeni ’23 and a doubles runner-up title for the team of Sofia Rodriguez ’23 and Emmeline Singer ’26. Both seniors Mariella and Sofia have been leading the tennis team in points and finishes since seventh grade when the two first joined the varsity team. They both made it to the state finals last year also earning runner up titles. Mariella Congeni ’23 has two consecutive regionals titles, winning the singles championship in 2023 and the doubles championship in 2022. Sofia Rodriguez ’23 was regional runner up in singles as a junior in 2022 and doubles as a senior in 2023. These two seniors responded to the pressure and have stepped up to the plate time and time again, each earning more points for the state team than all of the other lines combined. They have dedicated themselves to this team for the past 6 years and have shown incredible leadership as co-captains for the past two years. Their hard work is respected and admired by their teammates and their coaches. They will be missed.

The doubles duo of Maria English ’24 and Charlotte Johnston ’26 earned a valuable point for the team in the first round beating Catholic-New Iberia. In the next round, they faced the line 1 team from St. Louis Catholic and kept the first set extremely close however lost the first set 5-7. The very experienced senior team from St. Louis eliminated our talented line 2 doubles team marking the end of their state journey. Elise Griffith ’27 and the doubles team of Chiara Bazan ’25 and Elise Scafidel ’28 also qualified and competed in state, but with tough draws, were eliminated in the first round of play. Mariella Congeni ’23 and Sofia Rodriguez ’23 both have committed to play collegiate tennis at Sewanee and Rhodes respectively. They have and will continue to make the Cardinal Nation proud. Go Cardinals!

Golf

The Sacred Heart Golf Team was crowned Regional Golf Champions at the regional golf tournament last week. The Cardinals finished first out of 21 teams and earned a trip to the Golf State Championships in Lafayette. Jade Neves ‘28, Grace Gunn ‘27 and Maddie Rudolph ‘26 played their hearts out to qualify for the State Tournament and win the title of Regional Champs. Jade finished first overall out of 57 golfers to earn the title Regional Champion.

Jade shot a very impressive 68 (4-under par) which is the lowest round of golf in school history. She beat the next competitor by 4 shots. Jade hit some nice tee shots during the round and made some very difficult birdie putts. The girls battled on each hole and represented Sacred Heart very well. They are competing in the State Golf Championships this week. Go Cardinals!
