The Cardinals had a busy week, playing four games in five days. Last Tuesday, the Cardinals lost a close game 1-0 to Pope John Paul II in a back-and-forth match, in which the Cardinals dominated the second half, but just couldn’t manage to put one into the back of the net.
The Cardinals then bounced back the next day and defeated Episcopal 3-0. Goals were scored by Vivian Real ‘26, Charlotte Bush ‘25, and Cali Jane Luetkemeir ‘23. Carolina Mehaffie ‘24 and Mia Dreiling ‘24 recorded assists.
On Thursday, the Cardinals defeated Ursuline Academy 4-0 in a game in which the Cards dominated from beginning to end. Goals were scored by Martha Hammet ‘23, Mia Dreiling ‘24, Cali Jane Luetkemeir ‘23, and Charlotte Bush ‘25. Sinclair Nolan ‘23 and Martha Hammet ‘23 recorded assists. On Saturday, the Cards lost a back-and-forth battle against Newman 2-1 in a physical, high-paced game. CC Johnson ‘23 scored a goal on a penalty kick after Vivian Real ‘26 was fouled inside the box. The Cards will begin their playoff run this Saturday against Grace Christian. Game time is 4:00 at Pan Am Stadium. Good luck, girls!

Basketball
With four games in four days, the JV and varsity basketball squads had a busy week, capped off with an exciting trip to face our sister school in Grand Coteau.
First off, the JV basketball team matched up against Mount Carmel Academy. The game was back-and-forth, and while the Cardinals led 9-8 at the half, the Cubs came back in the third, with the game entering the fourth quarter knotted up at 16. Sophie Lo’s ’26 back-to-back three-pointers helped to rocket the Cardinals to a seven point lead, and Sacred Heart’s defense held strong in the last two minutes, giving the Cardinals the 26-20 win, their first against Mount Carmel in three years. In addition to Lo’s 3/3 shooting from beyond the arc, Bria Egana ’25 dominated in the lane, scoring nine as well.
The varsity squad stepped on the court next for their game again the Jaguars from Thomas Jefferson. The Cardinals started off quickly, amassing an eight point lead in the first quarter, which grew to a 14-2 lead at the half. While the Jaguars began to come back in the third. Cami Davis ’23 took a charge—one of her goals for the season—and ignited the Sacred Heart defense. The Cardinals closed out the game with a 38-21 lead, led by Lillian Balart ’22 with nine points and seven rebounds and Davis’s six points and nine rebounds in addition to her charge. Mallory Medo ’23 also scored six for the Cardinals.
On Thursday, the Cardinals faced their cross-town rival Ursuline to begin district play. While the Lions proved to be tough competition, the Cardinals hung tough and refused to give the Lions any easy shots, despite the tough loss. Balart ’22 led the Cardinals with eight points, and Leah Varisco ’26 contributed seven points and eight rebounds.
After lunch on Friday, the Cardinals headed out of town for a match against Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. After enjoying a tour of the beautiful campus, the Cardinals got down to business. The Rosary played an incredible defensive game, with Sophie Lo ’26 taking her second charge in two games. The Cardinals also kept pressuring the Saints offensively and won the contest 31-9. Natalia Mehaffie ’25 led all scorers with eight points, and Audrey Rose Lanie ’25 contributed six.
The Cardinals are excited to continue district play this week, as well as to celebrate Senior Night on Wednesday, February 2 at 5pm in the Rosary Gym. Come on out and support our five seniors!

Middle School Basketball
The 5th grade team competed in the NOAL 5th/6th grade South Division Championship last week. The Cardinals lost in the first round falling to Trinity, 22-6. Ellender Walpole ’29, Birdie Berniard ’29 and Emma Lynn ‘29 each scored a bucket. The team played a swarming man-to-man defense the entire game and allowed fewer points to an opposing team than any game this year. Mary Rose Ranger ’29, Charlotte Hammel ’29 and Ruark Murphy ’29 each grabbed 3 rebounds. The 6th grade team also competed in the NOAL 5th/6th grade North Division Championship last week. In round one, the Cardinals faced Louise McGehee, winning 28-10. The entire team’s defense was suffocating, not letting their opponent score the entire first half. The Cardinals entered the second half with a commanding 16-0 lead. Scoring came from Rosie Varisco ’28, Courtney Habetz ’28 and Sarah Wanek ’28. All members of the team contributed to the first round win. In Round two of the playoffs, the 6th grade team squared up against a very strong opponent, John Curtis Christian. Sarah Wanek ’28 had an incredible triple-double with 12 points, 10 blocks and 14 rebounds. Rosie Varisco ’28 played her heart out handling Curtis’ non-stop defensive pressure from the point guard position and assisted on all of the team’s scores. Courtney Habetz ‘28 caused havoc on the defensive end of the floor and the Hymel twins, Camille ’28 and Therese ’28, grabbed numerous offensive and defensive rebounds. Great season, we are proud of you. The 7th/8th team played its final regular season game last Friday versus St. Pius, winning, 22-7. Michaela Alvarez ‘27 led the team offensively, scoring 12 points and Caroline Balart ’27 scored 10 points. Lily Rosenstein ‘26 led the team with 12 rebounds and four steals. Evy Lauscha ’26, Camille Tyler ’27 and Gray Gibbs ’26 played solid defense and grabbed four rebounds apiece. The team will host Isidore Newman on Wednesday in the first round of the 7th/8th grade NOAL Championship. Go Cardinals!
