Varsity Tennis Defeats Defending DI State Champions
Yesterday at City Park, the varsity tennis team defeated the 2021 Division I State Champions, Mt. Carmel. Sofia Rodriguez ’23 was first to take the court at line 1 singles. Showing her experience, skill, and focus, she was able to defeat Mt. Carmel’s line 1 in no time, with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Emmeline Singer ’26 was the Cardinals’ other singles line. Her second year as a cardinal, this match was a big one for the eighth grader against a very good opponent. She pulled away quickly in the first set with a score of 6-2. The second set started out similarly for Singer and she was up 4-2. At this time, Singer’s opponent started to come back. Singer showed incredible patience and finished off the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Our line 2 and 3 doubles teams were not as successful and the match was tied at 2-2. Last to finish was the doubles team of Olivia Boyd ’22 and Mariella Congeni ’23. They were playing Mt. Carmel’s top doubles team comprised of a former state singles champion and former state doubles champion. Boyd and Congeni served well, showed off their volleys and worked as a team to win 6-2, 6-2, which clenched the win for the Cardinals!
Last week, the team took on Academy of Our Lady for the first time. We had a strong showing throughout 4 doubles lines with a 4-0 sweep!
-
Emmeline Singer ’26 and Ella Frischhertz ’23 6-0, 6-1
-
Cat Bonura ’22 and Ellie Brennan ’27 6-0, 6-0
-
Juliet Boyd ’24 and Natalie Halphen ’25 6-0, 6-0
