Basketball
The basketball team returned to the hardwood in the new year with a match against Northlake Christian last Thursday. The Cardinals came out strong, though they initially had some difficulty scoring against the Wolverines’ zone. They notched a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but by the end of the second quarter, they built a more substantial nine-point lead, ending with a beautiful baseball pass assist from Izabella Erazo ’22 to Sophie Lo ’26 for the easy left-handed layup. Sacred Heart continued strong in the second half, and their staunch defense held Northlake to only one point in the third quarter and eight points in the fourth. Cami Davis ’23 dominated in the post, leading to her second double-double of the season. She led all scorers with 14 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Lillian Balart ’22 contributed 8 points and 6 steals, all the while running an efficient offense from the point guard position. Taylor Robert ’25 had an excellent game, shooting some excellent mid-range shots and contributing seven points, three steals, and a block to the team effort. The Cardinals are back in action today against Christ Episcopal in the Rosary Gym and on Thursday on the road at Pope John Paul II and are looking forward to continuing their strong start to the new year.. The JV will be back in action on Thursday at Thomas Jefferson.

Middle School Basketball
The 5th grade team opened the season last Wednesday vs. Metairie Park Country Day. For many of these players, it was their first competitive basketball game of their career. While Country Day won the game by a wide margin, the girls gained valuable game experience. Leading the team in scoring were CoCo Rudolph '29 and Birdie Berniard '29. Ellender Walpole '29 led the offense from the point guard position. Birdie Berniard and Charlotte Hammel '29 led the team in rebounding. We are so excited to watch the team improve as the season progresses.
The 6th grade team also played Metairie Park Country Day last week. The team lost the game but there were many strong performances to highlight. Sarah Wanek '28 led the offense with 10 points and Courtney Habetz '28 ran the offense and played tenacious defense on a very talented MPCD player. Camille Hymel '28, Therese Hymel '28 and CeCe Ruggles '28 did a great job rebounding on the offensive and defensive boards. The team plays four games this week vs. Ursuline, John Curtis, Louise McGehee and Lusher.

Middle School Soccer
After two 7th/8th soccer games this past week were postponed due to the opposing team having issues, the 7th/8th Grade Red Team played McGehee on Saturday. The Red Team only had 11 players so five 5th/6th grade Red Team players stayed after their game to help the 7th/8th Red Team off the bench, and did they help! The game started with an explosion of Sacred Heart scoring with a goal by Caroline Kenter ’27 and two goals by Lily Varisco ’27. Eighth graders who scored in the first half included a quality shot from the left side by Abby Tuxillo and Emily Guider's well-placed free-kick, which was the first of her three goals on the day. Emily Guider, Eleanor Erazo-Pierson, Lucy Mason, and Avery Alig anchored a rock-solid backline that limited McGehee to zero first half shots.
Then, the 6th graders were able to get on the scoreboard as well with goals by Emmy Woodward and Cece Ruggles. The second half started with some position changes and the girls placed on their first restriction, off-foot touches only. Olivia Champagne ’29 nearly scored a goal despite the restrictions and Courtney Habetz ’28 had some great runs down the left side of the field and almost scored off-footed, too. Courtney did assist eighth grader Avery Alig's off-foot goal that Avery crushed into the back of the net.
After playing well in the field, Allie Genard ’28 went into the goalie position so starting goalie Ellie Habetz ’26 could get one last goal to complete the 11-0 victory.
