WELL DONE SWIM TEAM!

Varsity Cross Country

It was a wonderful group effort at the North Shore Metro Cross Country Championship in Hammond on Thursday. The team ran away as the CHAMPIONS and accomplished this without their #1 & #3 runners. They worked hard on running as a pack which kept our overall score very low. A runner is awarded their score by the place they finish in the race, so lower the score, the better!

Courtney Habetz ’28 - 20:13, led her team by getting out early and running a quick first mile and by doing so, she pulled along 5 of her teammates through that distance with only 15 seconds separating them from a 6:20 - 6:35.  By the time they crossed the 2nd mile marker, Sacred Heart had a close group of 4 runners now with only nine seconds apart: Courtney Habetz ’28 in 13:08 and Colette English ’27, Colleen Collins ’27 and Lily Varisco ’27 running stride for stride and all crossing in 13:17.  Vivian Real ’26 and Abby Truxillo ’26 ran the entirety of the 3 miles together and used each other to keep pushing while passing other runners that went out a little too quick early in the race.  Lucy Mason ’26 kept all of her teammates in site while she made her way over the entire distance of the race and CC Johnson ’23, Mariella Congeni ’23 and Libby Stassi ’26 followed closely behind and though they were running alone most of the second half of the race, they continued to work step after step to see how fast they could also finish the race and did so very well.  With 300 meters remaining in the race, the runners step onto the oval of the track to try their best to find one last gear so they can either hold the position they are in or potentially pass any runner in front of them.

The trio of Colette English, Colleen Collins and Lily Varisco ran as one over the last stretch of track and greatly helped each other all reach new personal records in the 3 mile distance.  Likewise, the duo of Vivian Real and Abby Truxillo also ran most of the race together.  The way the runners ran as a team and very close to each other was something we have been working on throughout the season and it finally played out well for us. With only 2 races left, this Friday, November 4, which is the State Meet Qualifier at 10:45 a.m. in City Park and the State Championship on November 14 in Natchitoches, this team is coming together very nicely and there are a number of potential scenarios of runners that could help the overall performance of the team.  Stay tuned to see how we stay in the running for a State Championship trophy.

Varsity Volleyball

The Cardinal Varsity Volleyball team had a great end to the regular season. They competed in two regular matches last week losing to Country Day and taking down Lakeshore. Following those two matches, the Cardinals headed to Baton Rouge to compete in the Dunham Skeleton Classic. Friday night, the Cardinals fell to Denham Springs but bounced back Saturday to defeat Parkway and Madison Prep. With such a busy week, the Varsity players put up some impressive numbers. Our offense was led by setters Brooke Habetz ’23 with 89 assists and Lily Stone ’24 with 40 assists. Our hitters were dominant at the net, ending the week with every starting hitter earning a positive hitting percentage. MC Mazzanti ’23 had 47 kills, Gigi Gibbens ’24 had 38 kills, Cami Davis ’23 had 34 kills, and Kate Farris ’24 had 27 kills. Cami Davis ’23 also added an impressive 13 blocks. Our defense kept the ball off the ground and allowed our offensive to be efficient. Libero Katherine Hale ’23 had 54 digs, defensive specialist Lucy Vaicius’23 had 24 digs, Kate Farris ’23 had 23 digs, and Lily Stone ’24 had 22 digs. Tough serving kept the Cardinals on top in many games. Kate Farris ’24 had 9 aces, MC Mazzanti ’23 had 8 aces, and Lucy Vaicius ’24 had 5 aces.

The Cardinals begin the postseason this week with our Bi-District Playoff game Wednesday at home. If the Cardinals win, they will play their Regional Playoff game on Friday in hopes of punching a ticket to the State Tournament in Lafayette next week.

Go Cards!

JV Volleyball

The ASH JV finished up their 2022 season with 2 matches this past week. On Oct 25, the JV traveled to Country Day for a match against a tough CD team. The first set went back and forth and was tied at 22 until the Cajuns had 2 solid kills and pulled away to win 25-23. In the second set Country Day came out on fire and jumped out to a 12-2 lead behind a barrage of tough serves. The Cardinals finally slowed the onslaught and clawed their way back into the game. Unfortunately it was too little too late and they

dropped the set 25-16. Leading the way for the JV on offense were Natalia Mehaffie ’25 with 5 kills, Olivia Monsted ’26 with 4 kills and Ava Lowe ’25 with 4 kills of her own. Piper Rubin ’25, Claire Moriarity ’25 and Taylor Robert ’25 each had an ace from the service line as well. On Oct 27,  The Lakeshore Titans came to town for the last match of the JV season. The Cardinal JV squad was ready for action and took care of business winning 25-16 and 25-14. Olivia Monsted ’26 contributed 3 kills and 2 blocks to the effort, Eleanor Erazo-Pierson ’26, Charlotte Bush ’25 and Shayde Randolph ’26 all served very well to keep the Titans under serving pressure all match. It was a full team effort as the JV finished their season with a 21-14 record. The season was fun and everyone contributed to the overall success of the team as many different line-ups had to be deployed over the past 3 months. The JV team is now wishing the Varsity best of luck as they prepare for the State Play-Offs.
