Soccer

The Cardinals played their first 3 matches of the season in the rain soaked Central Lafourche tournament. They opened with Central Lafourche and didn’t have to wait very long before Leah Varisco ’26 scored the first goal of the season. It was then followed up quickly with 2 goals by Carolina Mehaffie ’24. The Cardinals finished the match with a final score of 3-0.

The second match proved even less of a test as the Cardinals finished with a 4-0 victory, capping Daisy Mooney’s ’23 second consecutive clean sheet as the goalkeeper. The first 2 goals of this match were scored by Taylor Robert ’25 and Leah Varisco ’26. Aimee Landry ’24 scored a beautiful goal from a corner kick and Carolina Khatib ’25 scored the final goal of the match.

The final match proved to be more difficult as the Cardinals lost 0-3 to Parkview Baptist, though the game was closer than the score would indicate. Two of the goals were conceded late while they were trying to equalize.

After the tournament the team quickly got back to work during the holiday to prepare for the Dominican tournament and three more matches this upcoming weekend.

Basketball

The varsity basketball team opened up the 2022-2023 season with a commanding win over East Jefferson on Monday with a final score of 47-14. Defense was a key component in the Cardinal attack. East Jefferson committed over 15 turnovers in the game. Leah Varisco ’26 led the team in scoring with 16 points and in steals with 5. Natalia Mehaffie ’25 chipped in 13 points and 5 rebounds while Taylor Robert ’25 was flying all over on the defensive end for loose balls while also rounding in 3 steals. Our defensive attack was anchored by Bria Egana’25 and Cami Davis ’23 who led the team in rebounds with 5 and 6 a piece. The Cardinals will look to continue to be a force as they take on a formidable opponent in Country Day on Friday night.
