Indoor Track & Field State Team is Set
On Saturday, February 5, the Indoor Track & Field athletes competed in the Last Chance Qualifier at LSU to try and run a time or set a mark that could possibly earn them a qualifying spot in the State Championship Meet on Saturday, February 19. Only the top 12 times in the running events and the top 16 distances/marks in the field events will earn their way into that meet.
The competition started with the 4 x 200 meter relay team qualifying for the State Championship Meet which consisted of Aaliyah Oro '24, Malina Hull '24, Ekua Commey '22 and Lulu Real '23. The team bettered their previous time by nearly five seconds while running the relay in a time of 1:56.58, less than two seconds off the current school record. At the same time, the Long Jump competition was being contested and Lulu Real '22 - 14' 7.25" and Juliet Boyd '24 - 13' 11.75"were both trying to do their best to leap far enough to get a qualifying standard. Lulu did accomplish this goal and Juliet qualified as an alternate. Katherine Benton '24 competed in two different individual events, the 1600 Meters - 6:30.38 in a personal record and in the 60 meter hurdles - 11.50 also in a new personal record and a potential spot in the championship. Making her debut in the High Jump, Eileen Igoe '25 came into the competition with not as much training as others may have had, but she is a very determined young lady and rose to the challenge by clearing not only the opening height of 4' 4", but also the next height of 4' 6.75", which set a new personal record for her. Experience is something that can only be gained by attempting it and this meet, Eileen gained plenty that will help her in her future. Anabelle Adams '25 in the Shot Put reached her goal of a further distance of 22' 6.25" while also gaining a better understanding of how big meets happen and what it takes to continue to improve on her marks and training. In the Triple Jump event Juliet Boyd '24 and Aaliyah Mogilles '23 gave their best efforts on that day and both improved on their training sessions. Aleyea jumped to 26' 10"while Juliet leaped to 28' 8.25" in her first ever attempt in this event and to her delight and her team's, she went far enough to be the first alternate in the State Meet and has a great chance of making it. Olivia Boyd '22 has already qualified in the High Jump, so this time she was entered in the 800 meters and the 400 meters to test herself in her training and progress from an injury that she occurred just two weeks earlier while High Jumping. Her mental and physical toughness was put to the test and she succeeded in obtaining her goals of running around the 200 meter oval hard while testing her ankles stability and overall strength.
The last athlete to compete for the Cardinals at this meet was Leah Varisco '26 in the 3200 meter run. As Leah crossed the finish line in a State Meet qualifying time of 12:38 is an impressive feat by itself, but what is even more impressive was that Leah and her parents drove straight from the soccer playoff game in New Orleans that had just ended, ate in the vehicle, jumped out of the vehicle and got her spikes checked in, ran to the entrance and checked in with the clerk to received her race numbers and headed to the starting line with no warm up time. Ten minutes later, she found herself on the starting line with 24 other runners. Then, 16 laps later, she finished third in her heat and earned her spot in the Top 12 for the State Championship on February 19.
Over the next two weeks, the team will be preparing for the State Championship held on February 19. Good luck at State!

Basketball Gets a Senior Night Win
The Cardinals basketball team had a busy week, with three very competitive games, as they continue their district schedule. On Tuesday, the Cardinals went down St. Charles Ave. to face their crosstown rival, the McGehee Hawks. While the game was very close at the beginning, in the second and third quarters, Sacred Heart began to pull away. With excellent defense and rebounding, the Cardinals held the Hawks to 14 points, winning 30-14. Lillian Balart ’22 led all scorers with 11 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Cami Davis ’23 contributed five and pulled down a season’s best 18 rebounds. Leah Varisco ’26 scored six points while collecting nine rebounds and six steals. On Wednesday, the Cardinals hosted Crescent City for their senior night at the Rosary Gym, and the Cardinals rose to the occasion. Kate Ready ’22 scored the first points of the game, and her four points helped jump start the Cardinals’ offense. While the lead went back and forth during the first two quarters, toward the end of the second quarter and in the second half, Sacred Heart began to pull away. The Cardinals were victorious 28-15. Bria Egana ’25 scored seven, with nine rebounds, and Aleyea Mogilles ’23 played an excellent game in the post, pulling down 12 rebounds. The DeLaSalle Cavaliers traveled to the Rosary Gym on Thursday for a district contest. While three starters were out, the Cardinals played one of their best defensive games of the year. The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, but the Cavaliers made use of the fast break to take the lead, which Sacred Heart unfortunately could not overcome. Audrey Rose Lavie ’25 led the Cardinals with eight points and three steals, and Leah Varisco ’26 also contributed six with four steals.
The Cardinals are back in action this week for the final week of their regular season, including two key district games.

Middle School Basketball
The 7th/8th team finished the regular season with a 5-2 record and the #2 seed in the NOAL North Division. The semi-final playoff match-up was against rival Isidore Newman last Wednesday in the Rosary gym. The Cardinals were victorious over Newman back in December but beating a rival team twice is always a challenge. The game lived up to its billing with Sacred Heart holding off a late Newman run to eke out an 18-16 victory. Caroline Balart ’27 led the team offensively scoring 8 points, Lily Varisco ’27 scored 5 points, and Michaela Alvarez ’27 chipped in with 4 points. Defensively, Ava Keighery ’27 played tough defense throughout the game tying up two jump balls, Gray Gibbs ’26 led the team with 4 offensive rebounds, Elizabeth Alford ’27 grabbed 6 defensive rebounds and Camille Tyler ’27 pulled down 3 rebounds. The Championship game is today versus no. 1 seed, John Curtis in the John Curtis gym. Good luck ladies!

Middle School Soccer
The 7th/8th Red and White Teams, unfortunately, both lost close playoff games by identical 1-0 scores. The girls fought hard but it was just not either team's day. These losses do not take away from the tremendous effort of both teams during the season including better regular-season results against both playoff opponents, Lusher for the Red team and Ursuline for the White Team. The Red and White teams have a great deal of talent and leadership that will be moving to Upper School next year and will be missed. Congratulations to both teams on a season filled with improvement and achievement!
The 5th/6th White soccer team played a hard fought semifinal match last week, braving the rainy and cold weather to face Trinity. Despite the loss, they finished the seasons strong and proud of their growth! The 5th/6th Red team dominated their semifinal match against McGehee yesterday to clench a spot in the NOAL Championship tonight against Lusher. Good luck Cardinals!
