Varsity Tennis
Yesterday at Audubon, the varsity tennis team met the defending Division III State Champs, Newman. The Greenies, after graduating only one line last year, had their usual talented team. Our line 1 doubles team of Mariella Congeni ’23 and Olivia Boyd ’22 started strong with a 4-2 lead in the first set. Newman fought back and pulled ahead to 5-4. Congeni and Boyd dug deep to tie up the set at 6-6 forcing a tie break for the first set. Congeni had some clutch serves and Boyd had incredible down the line returns to win the tie break 7-4 and win the first set 7-6. The second set was all Congeni and Boyd with another early lead at 4-2. The Greenies took one more game in this set but that was it and Congeni and Boyd had clearly settled in and finished off Newman’s top doubles team with the match point a very strong overhead from Congeni for a final score of 7-6, 6-3. This was the first Cardinal victory against a Newman line 1 tennis team in years.
Emmeline Singer ’26 was also in a battle for the line 2 singles position. Playing a more experienced and older player from Newman, Singer showed her incredible patience and proved herself once again. Singer had a close first set but remained poised and steady to pull out this important first set at 7-5. The second set started out in Newman’s favor and Singer rallied from behind and showed her team how valuable she is. This gave the Cardinals another point. Our line 1 singles player, Sofia Rodriguez ’23, was playing against Newman’s nationally ranked, future Division I athlete. Despite incredible points, and long rallies, Rodriguez was unable to pull out this victory.
The match then came down to our remaining two doubles lines of Catherine Bonura ’22 and Maria English ’24 and Chiara Bazan ’25 and Ella Frischhertz ’23. Both teams battled strong. Bonura showed her athleticism once again while English displayed her defensive prowess. Bazan and Frischhertz kept it close with some great volleys from Bazan and steady rallies from the baseline from Frischhertz but unfortunately, these matches didn’t go our way. The Cardinals get another shot at the Greenies in the regional tournament on April 11. Let’s go, Cardinals!

Track
This past Friday the track & field team found themselves back at St. Martin's for their second meet of the season. The field events were first up and Sophie Lo '26 made her varsity debut in the javelin and discus. Sophie had four attempts to throw as far as she could and she did very well with a best throw of 64' 4" earning her 3rd place. Taylor Robert '25 at 63' 10" in 6th place, just 6 inches separated 3rd - 6th place. Sophie came back later in the Discus and tossed herself to a 2nd place finish with a throw of 63' 0" while Anabelle Adams '25 at 62' 8" got 3rd and also captured 5th in the shot put. Olivia Boyd '22 put her jumping skills to the test in the high jump and tied her personal record of 5' 0" while Eileen Igoe '25 at 4' 4" finished in 3rd. In the long jump, Juliet Boyd '24 claimed 2nd with a personal record of 14' 7 3/4" and Charlotte Bush '23 in her first long jump competition of the season had a very nice leap of 14' 0" for a 4th place finish. Juliet also finished 2nd in the triple jump with a hop, skip and a jump of 29' 7 3/4".
By the time the running events started, the 4 x 200 relay teams were ready to move the baton around the track as fast as possible. Schools were able to have two teams per relay at this meet which allowed for more runners to get into some competitive races. The first team in 1:57.53 for 2nd was Vivian Real '26 (28.85), Aaliyah Oro '24 (31.63), McLaine Schlosser '26 (27.92) and Malina Hull '24 (29.11). The second team finished in 2:02.10 for 5th was Juliet Boyd '24 (29.57), Taylor Robert '25 (28.71), Maddie Do '25 (34.32) and Charlotte Bush '25 (29.50).
Next up was the 1600 meters where our three entries all ran a very strategic and excellent race with Leah Varisco '26 in 1st - 5:53 PR, Lily Varisco '27 in 4th - 6:04.53 and Colette English in 5th - 6:05.33 PR. The 100 meter hurdles saw Maddie Do '26 finish 4th in 20.28 and Olivia Boyd '22 making her debut and smiling over every hurdle in 21.28. The sprint event that the 100 meter dash is known for had Vivian Real '26 in 4th place with a very nice time of 13.97 for her first individual race of the season, while Aaliyah Oro '24 in 14.07 finished in 6th. Marin Major in the JV ran 16.36. The 800 meter run was next up with Abby Truxillo '26 finishing 5th in 2:50.09 for a PR, Taylor Robert '25 for 6th in 2:52.45. In the JV 800, the Cardinals were well represented with a footrace to the finish line between Chiara Bazan '25 in 2:59.56 PR and Colette Shannon '25 in 3:00.10 PR, both setting new personal records. In the 4 x 100 meter relay, the team that ran 55.94 (3rd) was made up of McLaine Schlosser, Vivian Real, Aaliyah Oro, Malina Hull and the team that ran 1:00.81 was Claire Moriarty, Abby Truxillo, Marin Major, Juliet Boyd. The next event up was the 400 meters, one lap around the track in an all out sprint and Olivia Boyd - 1:05.31 (3rd) / Lily Varisco - 1:07.11 (5th) PR / Sarah McKinney '24 - 1:15.95 / Colette Shannon - 1:17.97 / Claire Parrish '25 - 1:18.10 all got to experience the "joy" of this hard race. Maddie Do came back from the sprint hurdles to add more distance in the 300 meter hurdles, where she is gaining more knowledge of the event every time she competes in it and this time she ran under a minute for the first time in 59.97 for a 4th place personal record. Aaliyah Oro ran our fastest time in the 200 meters, but there was a clock malfunction and no time was recorded. McLaine Schlosser - 30.49 PR / Claire Moriarty - 33.05 PR / Marin Major - 34.25 PR all achieved personal records. During the last event for the team on this night, the two runners participating had already run the 1600 earlier, but their training over the last week had hopefully prepared them for the eight laps that awaited them. Leah Varisco - 12:37.53 (1st) SB and Colette English - 13:11.23 (3rd) pushed the pace early in the race to see how long they could hold on while running lap after lap. These two young ladies have already proven that they are more than capable of doing the distance double early in the season, which is going to prepare them for the tougher competition that they will face as this short season progresses.
The entire team this past Friday all stepped up and performed beyond what was expected, stepping into spots that they may not normally do during a meet. The Cardinals next compete this Friday, April 1, in the Newman Invitational being now held at West Jefferson. Thanks and hope to see you there!

The Cardinal softball team played Kehoe France School on Monday, March 21. This was a game primarily for our 5th and 6th graders and was a great opportunity for some of our younger players to get a lot of playing time and work on the skills and game situations we have been working on in practice. The girls played a great game both in the field and at the plate winning the game 8-5. The softball team has three games this week as they prepare for the NOAL tournament next week.
