Cardiology Case Study
Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC)
Leo, a 5-year-old neutered male Boxer, was initially presented to The COVE Cardiology Service for further evaluation of two episodes of collapse that occurred on a single day three weeks earlier when he became overexcited and pulled very hard on his leash. The first episode occurred during an altercation with another dog over ice cream, and the second occurred after becoming excited over the neighbor’s dog. Both episodes are described as “four legs splaying out from under him, he hit the ground, rolled over on his side, bounced back up, was a bit ‘glassy eyed’ and then took off completely normal."

Tech Tip
Syncope vs. Seizure
As a technician, it is important to know the difference between seizure and syncope. In cardiology, we classify them as episodes until a diagnosis is proven.

  • Seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled movement of the body caused by abnormal brain activity.

  • Syncope is the loss of consciousness caused by inadequate cerebral blood flow. It can have many causes, including vasovagal, bradycardia/tachycardia/ other arrhythmia, decompensated heart disease (congestive heart failure), pulmonary hypertension, acute anemia, or other causes of hypotension.

App Makes Monitoring Respiration at Home Easy
Need convenient at-home monitoring? We have an app for that!

The most effective at-home monitoring for patients at risk of left congestive heart failure is resting respiratory rates. Ceva has an app (Cardalis RRR App) available for iPhones and Androids that helps clients obtain resting respiratory rates, alerts them to elevations, and notifies them on when to contact their veterinarian. It also has features to log notes, set reminders for medications, and more.
