Reflection

Cards and Sacred Moments

by Pastor Jody

There is something special about a letter. Handwritten, a glimpse of your personality shared through your handwriting style. Knowing someone took the time to pick out a card, ponder our situation and write a note, address an envelope, stamp it and mail it. Receiving a letter is personal and it makes us feel special.

We started making cards on Thursdays at Haywood Street about 3 months ago. We are always eager to find and share a place at the table, any table, where we can spend time together and get to know each other. We decided that since we would have cards, we would send them to our friends who find themselves incarcerated in the county jail. We sent a bunch of cards and then about a week later we got them all back. There are some particular guidelines you have to adhere to when sending mail to the jail. So we tried again. This time sticking to the rules, we stamped and signed cards and sent them off not really knowing what to expect.

About 2 weeks later I started receiving letters from some of our friends in the county jail. Many were grateful to be remembered, some wanted us to continue to pray for them, some were asking for assistance or help of some kind. I have had friends come up to me and thank me for the card. Some express gratitude for being remembered or for having something to brighten up an otherwise dreary day. One friend said he was on the verge of losing hope and then he received a card of encouragement. One sticks out in particular though. One of our friends wrote back and shared that in all the times she had been in jail, this was the first time she had received a letter. This was the only time someone had taken the time to share a glimpse of their personality through the handwriting or taken the time to ponder her situation and then send a note of encouragement. It was the first time she had ever received a letter in jail.

Making cards is a fun way to be with one another. We get together and we share our lives, we laugh and we get to be creative. It is a fun table to come to. But the connection that is made is far greater than that table.
