As we catapult ourselves into the Fall 2021 semester at Goodwin University, I would like to share a few key strategic goals from the “Director’s Desk” that Career Services is focused on in our work with the GU community. Our work with graduate- level students has never been more crucial. Building on our partnership with Kaplan Mobray and the salient messages from his book, The 10Ks of Personal Branding, Career Services is designing three workshops which will be integrated into the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) curriculum permanently.
We are exploring such topics as personal branding, meaningful work & Impostor phenomena.
We would like to engage students around such questions as:
· “What can I do right now to be a role model for myself?”
· “What do I see as meaningful work NOW?”
· “What are some ways to quiet the ‘imposter syndrome’ and start believing in
yourself?”

As a career-focused institution, Goodwin takes seriously its commitment to shaping our students to be “career-ready” professionals. Part of that commitment must center around embracing NACE’s eight career readiness competencies. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) revised and updated their career competencies in 2021 and are advocating for the following to be embraced by colleges and employers alike:
|
|
One competency that we in GU Career Services are taking a closer look at is Equity and Inclusion. What are ways, for example, we can enhance our programming and services through a DEI lens? What do we need to do in order to make sure that everyone who comes through our office or attends a career event feels seen, heard, and empowered to engage? As DEI trainer and consultant, Joelle Murchison states, “We can't just invite individuals to a party, but we must also make sure they are asked to dance, AND to select the music.” This work involves deep introspection and at times discomfort. For example, as taken from the Career Leadership Collective’s 2020 National Alumni Career Mobility (NACM) report entitled “Career Mobility Meets COVID-19, Equity, and ROI” we learned students’ insights on equity post-graduation:
- Male alumni had significantly higher scores on the overall Career Mobility Index than female alumni, who in turn had significantly higher scores than non-binary alumni.
- Asian and White alumni had significantly higher career mobility than other groups.
- Black/African American alumni were significantly less likely than others to report that their salary is enough to pay their bills every month and were significantly more likely to report that they are currently unemployed and seeking.
- Compared to alumni age 35 and under, alumni over age 35 were significantly less likely to agree that their institution helped them network with employers.
As part of a national network of colleges and universities that seek to promote “high impact mobility practices," GU Career Services must also make sure we are doing so with all demographics in mind. For example, when we promote mobility practices such as the creation of a career readiness plan or networking with employers, are we also looking at ways we can remove systemic barriers that have inhibited our students of color and other historically disenfranchised populations from having access to such employer networks to begin with?
Staff in Career Services will be partnering with faculty, staff, students, and alumni to address some of these barriers and make sure that all students at Goodwin are drivers in their own career success.
On behalf of the Career Services Team, I wish all of you a healthy and meaningful semester ahead.
-Stephanie Hertz, Director of Career Services

I HAVE A GAP in my employment history. I’ve been worried about how this would play out with employers in obtaining an interview and of course during the interview as well. How could I handle this dilemma?
Of course you will review your reason(s) for the work gap. The key is to be able to show that the situation, whatever it may have been, is resolved. Show that you are focused using your skills to move forward. I believe that there is more of an understanding now regarding individuals’ personal situations. You will get across that you are hardworking and goal oriented and no matter what, you will show that you are dedicated to the positions that you are considering and that your values/your brand includes commitment and reliability. This will come across in your LinkedIn profile, on your résumé/cover letter, and during upcoming interviews.
Remember, you can clearly and confidently explain why the gap. You love to work and interact and make a difference. During your gap period, you volunteered in a community or healthcare organization for example. Perhaps you cared for a family member or friend; perhaps you were taking classes at Goodwin University or studying for your certification exam or perhaps you were reflecting on your next steps/career goals. In other words, you kept yourself busy, and you are and will make a difference. I have to say this -- maybe just maybe, you decided to take time for yourself – travel, develop a comedy routine, or just try out an opportunity (that didn’t work out) and this is ok. In other words, you are an explorer!
Keep in mind those transferrable skills, which you should never let falter:
Technical
Critical Thinking/Problem Solving & Communication
Multitasking & Teamwork
Leadership
Creativity
I know you can do it and please keep in mind that you can always contact Career Services!

A meaningful quote: “Believing in yourself is the starting point. Effectively communicating your abilities to others is the necessity.”
If you adapt this a bit: Believing in yourself is the starting point, effectively communicating how you will help to make your organization & department successful is the necessity!
Any positive motivational quotes that you might apply to yourself?
