End of school year highlights. Please share this email with your North Ed Career Tech student, family and friends!

The Momentum Continues

It is hard to believe we are officially wrapping up our 50th school year here at Career Tech. Celebrating a half-century of learning at our center has given all of us a chance to look back at how far we’ve come, but more importantly, to look at what our students and staff are achieving right now.

This spring was a whirlwind of success. We watched three of our students prove their skills on the national stage at the SkillsUSA National competition in Atlanta, GA, and another six will be traveling to the FCCLA National Competition in Washington, D.C., later this summer. Success looks different for every student who walks through our doors, but the grit and focus we saw in the building this year was unmatched. It is no wonder our students are enjoying the spoils of their work at the national level.

Furthermore, our fantastic staff didn’t miss a beat in the year of our Golden Anniversary, providing students with the high-quality, real-world experiences they craved every single day. Our 50th year also brought more recognition to our hard-working team. Following our attendance at the ACTE CareerTech Vision Conference in Nashville, where Career Tech was proudly represented on the national stage, Scott O’Dell, our Aviation Maintenance teacher, was recognized as the ACTE New Teacher of the Year for both Michigan and Region 1, and Agriscience instructor Brian Matchett was named as the Michigan Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Association of Agriscience Educators. Both Scott and Brian will travel to New Orleans in December in the hopes of being named as national winners in their respective categories. Scott and Brian are now the fourth and fifth Career Tech staff members to be recognized on the national stage in the last three years.

Looking ahead to the 2026–27 school year, the demand for what we do isn't slowing down. Enrollment is already looking incredibly strong for the fall with over 1,400 applications for both new and returning students. To our graduating seniors: thank you for making our 50th year so memorable. Whether you are heading straight into the workforce with your new credentials, starting an apprenticeship or continuing your education, we are incredibly proud of you.

To all of our Career Tech families, thank you for your continued support. Have a safe, relaxing summer, and we’ll see you back here in the fall to start our next 50 years.

Respectfully,

Awards Night 2026

On May 26, Career Tech staff, students and families gathered at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa to celebrate the accomplishments of our students, their success during the 2025-26 academic year, and present scholarships and awards to our seniors. Each program and academic department chose their Outstanding Students of the year. We also recognized all Student Club winners. Through the support and generosity of the North Ed Foundation, the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, the NMC Foundation and several university partners, students earned over $172,750 in Academic Scholarships or Tools of the Trade Awards. This night is truly a celebration of student achievement and we are grateful for all who were in attendance.

Skills USA National Results

Career Tech Film & New Media juniors, Sophie Augenstien (Bellaire) and Roman Hoppe (Elk Rapids), participated in the SkillsUSA Digital Cinema Production National Competition. Before the trip to Atlanta, Roman and Sophie had to study '80s comedy movies, and then had one week to create a 5-minute film borrowing elements specifically from '80s "Nerd" comedies. Once in Atlanta, they had the chance to meet and work with other student filmmakers from across the country, complete an additional editing assignment and participate in a film festival-style format where their film was shown with a brief Q&A afterward. Sophie and Roman earned 5th place out of 35 other high school teams.

In addition, Aviation Maintenance senior Cash Stawicki (Traverse City Central) participated in the SkillsUSA national competition and placed 8th in his event.

Congratulations to our program instructors Zac Wendland and Scott O'Dell for helping these students pave their way to the national spotlight!
