Volume 206 | June 2025 in Review

| June Treasure Talk 2025!

Summer is here, and school is out! Soon it will be time for Summer Camp at FAU! This year, for the first time ever, because more than 100 of you wanted to attend, we will have camp for two days with about 50 of you coming each day!

Thus, AACY is doing something different to make this fun experience the best it can be for you!

Now, it's your turn to do one new thing for yourself this summer! Being kind to yourself, or practicing self-care, is just as important as caregiving for your family members.

Plus, when you feel good about yourself, giving care and especially emotional support becomes easier.

Join us at AACY to do something new for you this summer!!

| Activities Recap & Preview:

Greetings, CYP Friends!

June was filled with sunshine, smiles, and unforgettable memories!

We kicked off the month with a Bowling Day at AMF Boynton Beach Lanes, sponsored by Healthier Boynton Beach. You all had a blast enjoying bowling, tasty food, and arcade fun!

Next up was MCN Art Week, sponsored by Manipura Care Network. Some of you had the chance to travel by train to Miami and explore art museums in both Miami and West Palm Beach. How exciting to experience new cities and discover amazing works of art!

We wrapped up the month with Jam for Humanity, thanks to a special invite from Mission Possible Foundation. You laced up your skates at Astro Skating Rink, danced to live drumming, earned community service hours, and even participated in a music video PSA!

We’re looking forward to seeing you at Summer Camp Treasure and all the other fun events we’ve planned this summer.

Don't forget to check out your event photos on our Instagram @caregivingyouthproject! Be sure to keep an eye out for more upcoming activities as well.

We’re looking forward to an amazing summer with all of you!

Thank you.

| Caregiving Youth: Sharing Their Stories

| Neo Shares What It’s Really Like to Be a Young Caregiver

There is a side of caregiving that people don’t often talk about, especially when the caregiver is a kid.

Neo is a teen from New York City who helps care for his dad after a stroke. This month, he shared his story on Instagram as part of a national call to action from AACY and PBS Well Beings.

His video gives a powerful look at what it’s really like to be a Caregiving Youth.

Neo talked about the emotions, the responsibilities, and how lonely it felt before he found AACY. He also shared how much it meant to be invited to the Caregiving premiere event at the United Nations in New York City.

We are so grateful to Neo for speaking up and for reminding the world that young caregivers have stories that deserve to be heard, seen, and honored.

Watch Neo’s video here!

Thank you, Neo. Your voice matters, and we’re proud to share it.

| AACY Represents Caregiving Youth Across the Country

This month, the American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY) had the honor of representing Caregiving Youth at three special events in Washington, DC, New York City, and Los Angeles for the launch of the PBS documentary Caregiving.

This new film, with Bradley Cooper as its Executive Producer, shows the real-life experiences of people of all ages who care for family members. It includes the story of Jacob, a student in AACY’s Caregiving Youth Project, and highlights young people who take on big responsibilities at home.

In Los Angeles, Emmy-winning producer and longtime AACY supporter Dale Bell attended the premiere and panel on our behalf. Dale has spent decades helping caregivers be seen and supported, and we’re thankful he continues to stand up for Caregiving Youth.

In New York, AACY was proud to be represented by Maria Miranda, LMSW, a former Caregiving Youth, and Neo, a teen who cares for his father after a stroke. Neo’s video journal and powerful words helped shine a light on what it’s like to be a student and a caregiver.

And in Washington, DC, two young adults from a former Caregiving Youth family joined AACY’s founder, Dr. Connie Siskowski, at the screening. They met Jacob and spoke up for the 5.4 million children and teens in the U.S. who care for someone they love.

These events were an exciting and emotional reminder that even though Caregiving Youth are often unseen, they are never alone. AACY will keep working to make sure their voices are heard.

You can now watch Caregiving on the PBS app or online at PBS.org.

Neo's Note:

“Forever a night that I will never forget. For 3 years, I felt alone. Taking care of my dad, it seemed like something no one else did. Especially at my age. I had no one to share my stories with, nor my pain, until @aacy_caregivingyouth popped into my life.

When I learned about AACY, I felt relieved. Someone out there was caring for kids who were caring for others. I finally felt like I wasn’t alone, so I decided to share my story.

A story to inspire other human beings taking care of a loved one. Whether it was kids or adults, or people who had already taken care of someone, I wanted to inspire.

Last night, because of my story, I was invited to a dinner filled with so many amazing people. So many different people, yet similar experiences. We were all connected by one thing: caregiving.

I never felt like I was worth something, but these people let me know I was. I’m not one to cry easily, but seeing my name on the envelope made me emotional. It made me feel acknowledged.

Someone cared enough about me to invite me to such an event.

Thank you, AACY, for this opportunity. Such an emotional night. Everything hit so close to home.

Getting to talk about my experience as a caregiver, I felt a weight come off my shoulders.

And thank you, @wellbeingsorg, for supporting me and many other people with the same weight.”

| A Visitor from Australia Learns About Caregiving Youth at AACY

This month, AACY welcomed a special guest from Melbourne, Australia. Madeleine Buchner, the founder of Little Dreamers Australia, traveled to our office to see how we support Caregiving Youth in the United States.

Madeleine is a 2024 Churchill Fellow and the 2023 Young Victorian of the Year. She created Little Dreamers to help young people in Australia who care for family members, just like AACY does here.

During her visit, she met with our team and learned how we work with schools, families, and local groups. She was especially interested in our Caregiving Youth Project, which helps students stay on track in school and feel less alone.

In Australia, the phrase “Young Carer” is used in national programs and funding. Madeleine explained that even with national support, local stories can sometimes be overlooked. In the United States, we do not yet have a national plan, but organizations like AACY are making a big impact in their communities.

Madeleine left inspired by the work she saw here. She reminded us that no child should have to give up a bright future because of caregiving responsibilities, no matter where they live.

We thank Madeleine for visiting AACY and for raising awareness about caregiving youth around the world. Her visit shows that people everywhere can work together to support kids who care for others.
